Monetâs house&garden, Giverny, France by Rick Ligthelm
Return to Magenta, Alex Ugalek
Our people call this place the Emerald Graves. Long ago, before the fall of the Dales, a tree was planted for every warrior who pledged themselves to the guardianship of the Dales. Together, these warriors were the Emerald Knights of Halamshiral, and the forest of their trees was named the Emerald March.
Today the Department of Awesome Parenting salutes Melbourne, Australia-based mother Shelley Gifford, who turns her daughter Graceâs hair into elaborate works of braided art nearly every day. Gifford says sheâs always enjoyed braiding hair, but wasnât aware of just how creative one could get with it until she discovered people all over the world sharing their own braids via social media.
âI found accounts that were solely set up to show hairstyles that mums had created on their daughters. I loved what I saw and it was then that I started my own Facebook and Instagram braiding accounts. I started following other hair and braiding accounts: asking questions and continuously watching video tutorials. I also attended braiding and up-do workshops. I just love learning new styles and advancing my skills. Iâm hair obsessed. Iâm always challenging myself to create something new and unique.â
Gifford usually braids Graceâs hair before school and sometimes on the weekends. While sheâs always coming up with new braid designs in her free time, she spends only about 15 to 20 minutes actually braiding her daughterâs hair, which is done while grace watches tv after getting herself ready for school. If a particular style is going to take longer than usual, they wait until the weekend to do it.
Gifford always documents her daughterâs new hairstles with a photo. You can follow her latest creations via Facebook or on Instagram.

11. Do you ever want to get married? When I was younger I always assumed I would get married... I think I'd still like to, but it's not as important to me as it used to be. I'm very happy with the relationship I have with my partners.
13. Do you get jealous easily? No, I don't think so!
17. Do you like kissing in public?Maybe a little.
27. Has someone ever written a song or poem for you?Already answered this one.
32. Have you ever experienced unrequited love?Well... yes. I've known I was polyamorous since I was fairly young. And I knew most people weren't comfortable with that. I fell in love so easily, and I was so scared I'd push someone away because I couldn't give one person everything. I only persued a few relationships, really, and considering how often I develop feelings for people... most of that is unrequited.
47. How old are you?Oof. I turned 50 this year.
55. Share a relationship story. This is probably meant to be about a romantic relationship, but: Katesh and my son Rhistel did not get along very well at first. Usually those two were a headache when they argued, but they're also both dramatic enough and violent enough to be... well, honestly, hilarious. For example, one outing when Rhistel was being a teenager, Katesh got fed up--keep in mind, Katesh is a qunari, and Rhistel weighed maybe 120 pounds soaking wet--so he picked him up and threw him into the lake. When the poor thing got out Katesh was so smug until Rhistel mind blasted him into the lake himself. I was so proud.
61. What is the first thing you notice in someone?Since I lost my hearing, I had to train myself to look at mouths or hands first. Before then... I'm not sure. Maybe the way they were dressed?
77. Whatâs your opinion on age differences in relationships?Haha, well. I'm sure I didn't start out intenting to be almost 20 years older than my primary partner, but it's not like I could help falling for him. Needless to say I don't really mind.
82. Who is the last person you hugged?Rhistel, not too long ago.
multiples of 9
9. Describe your perfect mateIdeally... someone affectionate, someone I can laugh with and have a friendly debate with, someone who has something they're passionate about, and who cares about what's important to me. Fluency in sign language is... also pretty vital, haha.
18. There was no 18!
27. Has someone ever written a song or poem for you?Frankly, it's highly likely. I don't believe I've recieved any, but I have heard quite a few songs and poems /about/ me. And Katesh, obviously.
36. Have you ever liked one of your best friends? My best friends are the people I'm most likely to fall for. That's... not always a good thing. In the three most recent cases, however, it turned out wonderfully.
45. How many people did you kiss in the last year?Just the three.
54. Is there someone you will never forget?I'd be amazed if I ever forgot most of the people in my life right now. I can't express how much the Inquisition and the people in it have changed my life. Even though lately I don't see many of the people I was closest to a few years ago, I still see several of them daily. I can't, unfortunately, guarantee I won't suffer any further head trauma, so I can't rule out future amnesia.
63. What is your definition of âhaving sexâ?Uh... probably... any sexual act with another person? I think as long as there's... /some/ amount of arousal involved, and probably an intention to finish? I see it as... pretty general.
81. Who are five people you find attractive? There are so many beautiful people in this world, I couldn't possibly pick just five. Because I'm biased and very in love, however, Katesh, Dorian, and Iron Bull are my absolute favorite to look at.

âMages are dangerous!â the Chantry cries, as it systematically kills or makes tranquil any mage not strong enough to survive single victory-or-death combat with a demon. âMages are too naive to live outside the Circles,â the Chantry tsks, as they categorically refuse to provide any education relevant to survival skills to the people they abducted from their home environments as children. âMages need to be protected from the violence of angry citizens!â the Chantry exclaims, as it carefully indoctrinates a new generation of Thedas citizens into hate and fear of magic.
