I’m a clasically trained pianist and I have very high ambitions even though I started late (at 12, im 18 now) However, due to my depression I don’t find any inspiration or motivation to practice anymore. How do you find energy to practice when you’re stuck? I’m supposed to apply to music school in 2 years and even though I’m good I feel like I won’t be competent ..
Hey, anon! I have also started late and I'm trying to get to the music university this year. I'm struggling a lot with my self-esteem and with motivaton.
First thing of all – be gentle with yourself. Because you're a precious being and you have to respect your own boundaries. If you haven't already – try seeking out professional help. After all, I'm just a music theory student, but I will try to give you some tips.
If you want to find some motivation, I think it's helpful to play everyday. Even if it's only five minutes of scales. Or just playing around with your instrument, composing. Just maintain the contact. I would suggest starting your day with a five minute practice/playing. Play what you want to play, what gives you joy. Try pieces you have always wanted to learn. Let yourself love your instrument again. Listen to your favourite recordings. And if throughout the day you'll feel the urge to play more, that's a win, isn't it?
When you feel like it, do a plan, structure your practice time. And make it a little bit longer. Don't be harsh with yourself, when you skip a day, just try to keep playing. Two years it's a lot of time!
Sadly, classical music is a very toxic and competive field sometimes. But never let that discourage you. Manipulating with sound waves is an incredible ability. It's worth fighting for. So are you.
I wish you the very, very best <3
