Good Graces

His fingers curled slightly against hers, grounding himself in the warmth of her touch. “Slow works for me,” he said, his voice steady but low, like he didn’t want to break whatever fragile thing they were rebuilding. “We’ve rushed before, and look where that got us.” A hint of something wry passed through his expression, but there was no bitterness in it, just the honesty of someone who had learned the hard way.

His thumb brushed against her hand before he finally exhaled, a small nod following. “Together, then.” The words weren’t grand, weren’t overpromising, but they meant everything. And for now, that was enough.

"I'm really glad you showed up Marcus...I mean it."

He let out a low chuckle, shaking his head. “Alright, noted, no flames, no mystery ingredients, and nothing that tastes like regret. I think I can manage that.” He leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows on the counter. “But just so we’re clear, if this turns out to be a masterpiece, I expect full credit. And if it’s a disaster… well, you did say you’re here for the challenge.” His grin widened. “No backing out now, Haley.”

Her eyes sparkled with amusement as she gave him a once-over, tapping her fingers on the counter thoughtfully. "Chaos as an art form, huh? Well, I’m not opposed to a little mess if it means there’s a chance for something interesting to happen. But fair warning—you’re the one holding the matches here, not me." She grinned, tapping the edge of her glass with a soft clink.

At his comment about credit, she chuckled, rolling her eyes in mock exasperation. "Oh, don’t worry, I’ll give you all the credit, Kieran. If this turns out to be a masterpiece." Her voice dropped an octave, clearly teasing now. "But if it’s a disaster, you’ll be lucky if I don’t blame you entirely. You know how I love a good challenge, but I’m not sure my stomach can handle 'mystery ingredients.'" She leaned back, her smile mischievous. "So, no pressure. Let’s just see how it turns out. But I’ll definitely hold you to that promise—no backing out now."

The rebuke came easily, but gently; as much grief as some of her clients often gave her, she was no great fan of law enforcement or the sovereignty of "the system" herself, but she tried to keep things neutral enough whenever she had to go down to the station in order to maintain a working relationship with these people. She liked Haley well enough though. At least Laurel didn't immediately get the urge to strangle her on sight.

"Oh, I'm peachy," she said, looking up at Haley with a grin too wide and dead-eyed to be real. "I love coming out here on on a Saturday night just to do paperwork. There's nowhere else I'd rather be, really."

She took a small step forward, eyes scanning over the paperwork Laurel had spread out in front of her, then casually added, “But seriously, you don't have to pretend you love this. We both know you’d rather be anywhere else, even if it’s just at home, sipping something strong and pretending the world outside doesn’t exist.” Her smile softened, but her eyes still had a bit of that knowing edge to them. “We all get to that point sometimes.”

Haley paused, folding her arms across her chest as she tilted her head slightly. "But hey, no judgment. Just don't make it a habit of enjoying the paperwork, yeah? I think we’d both be in trouble if that happened."

"You better be here to give my journalists the next massive story that's going to sell a bunch of papers, or give me some exclusive photographs of the town superhero. If not, your parked ass better get movin'."

“Yeah, I get that. Some days it’s like the world’s just... louder than usual, like you can’t catch a break from it.” She took a slow sip of her drink, considering her words. “Sometimes, company helps—just someone to share the quiet with, you know? Doesn’t have to be anything grand, just a little space to breathe.” She met his eyes again, the teasing edge back in her voice as she added, “So, lucky for you, I’m pretty good at making things a little less noisy.” The grin she gave him was playful, but the offer was real.

Prince would have traded all the Christmas presents in the world to just have his father want to spend some time with him.

Her expression softened as she thought about his question. "Hopes and goals for 2025, huh?" She leaned back in her chair, swirling her coffee thoughtfully. "I guess... I’d like to focus more on being present. Life moves fast, and sometimes it’s hard to slow down and appreciate everything that’s happening. It sounds a little cliché, but maybe this year I can really make more of an effort to connect with the people who matter, you know? And, if I’m being honest, maybe work on figuring out how to be okay with not having everything figured out yet." She shot him a playful grin, eyes sparkling. "And, of course, I’m definitely on board for that pastry crawl. I’ll get a head start before I have to start all those 'good intentions' for the New Year."

He swallowed, finding his voice a little more sure than before. "Haley," he began, his tone quiet but steady, "there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you. I know we’ve been through a lot, and I don’t know if it’s the right time, but… can we try again? I’m not asking for everything to be perfect, but… can we give this a shot? Can we figure it out, together, like we used to?"

The question hung there, not urgent, but full of meaning. Her lips parted, the words forming on the tip of her tongue. She hesitated, but only for a moment, because despite all the things that had happened between them, something deep inside her whispered that maybe this was the time to try again. To open up, just a little more. Her voice was steady, but the slight tremor in it betrayed the mix of emotions she felt. “Marcus…” She let the name linger, like a quiet promise. “I don’t know what the future holds, and I’m not going to pretend like I have all the answers. But… I think we owe it to ourselves to see if we can find our way back to what we had. Slowly. We don’t have to have it all figured out right now. But yeah… I’m willing to try again. Together.”

Her eyes met his, and the steady warmth in her gaze matched the depth of the words she’d just said. “We’ve been through a lot, but maybe that’s what makes us stronger now. If we’re both in it, I think we can figure it out. Whatever this is, we’ll figure it out together.” She gave his hand a gentle squeeze, a quiet promise without needing to say more.

Kieran raised an eyebrow as he held up his hands in mock surrender. “A disaster? Me? I’d like to think I’ve got the culinary adventure under control, but if you want to step in as my official taste tester, I can’t promise there won’t be a few... unexpected results.” He paused, then flashed a mischievous grin. “But hey, you can always judge me by my standards. That’s half the fun, right?”

When Kieran held up his hands in mock surrender, Haley couldn’t help but laugh, leaning back as if to give him some space to work his ‘culinary adventure.’ “A disaster? You sure about that? I mean, I’d offer to step in, but I’m not sure my taste buds are ready for that kind of commitment.” She smirked, tapping her chin thoughtfully. “But, hey, unexpected results? Sounds like the kind of challenge I’m here for. You just let me know when your mystery dish is ready for evaluation.” She leaned forward again, the mischievous grin never leaving her face. “And judge you by your standards, huh? Fair enough. But, just so we’re clear, my standards involve no flaming kitchens, no unidentifiable ingredients, and definitely no ‘surprise’ aftertaste. Keep it fun, but let’s keep it… tasty, alright?”

She chuckled, raising her glass to mirror Haley’s gesture. “Mood lighting is a must, candles, fairy lights, the whole deal. Maybe even some ocean sounds playing softly in the background for the full effect. We’ll be so serene, people will think we’ve joined a meditation retreat.” Her grin widened as she leaned forward, tapping the edge of Haley’s glass with hers. “Here’s to zen mastery and being the undisputed queens of relaxation. If this doesn’t erase every ounce of stress, I don’t know what will.”

The more Lia talked about mood lighting and ocean sounds, the more Haley was sold. “Mood lighting is essential. I’m thinking candles in every corner, fairy lights draped across the ceiling like we’re in a Pinterest dream. The ocean sounds? Genius move. Maybe we throw in some gentle rain noises too. Just in case we need that extra level of serenity.” Haley leaned forward, tapping her glass against Lia’s with a satisfied smile. “Here’s to becoming legends in relaxation. If this doesn’t fix everything, I swear, we’ll have to start a spa empire. People will come to us for the ultimate zen experience. And if nothing else, we’ll have a hell of a time pretending to be meditation experts.”

Her eyes sparkled, already picturing the whole ridiculous yet perfect setup. “I can already feel the stress melting away. This is exactly what I need." She paused, then added with a wink, "Also, if anyone dares question our spa day, we’ll just hit them with our ‘I’m one cucumber slice away from enlightenment’ look."
