Would you personally recommend JLA: The Obsidian Age?
As a Kyle Rayner fan and if you’re one as well, I would, but it’s because some of the important framing and parts of the story arc hinged on him (he had some really cool and dramatic moments). So that was nice to see. It’s also set before (and the epilogue, during) Kyle left Earth after that horrible incident that his friend Terry Berg went through. So timeline-wise it adds a bit of something (like him saying goodbye to Wally). He also got to have some nice interactions with Bruce, Wally and Dick (who also played an important role) so I was super happy about that because I liked them too. I like Firestorm as well, so seeing him again was a bonus haha.
As for the rest… Overall, it’s a bit messy in places (as with a lot of JLA stories), and it focuses a lot on Aquaman/Atlantis OCs as well, so if that’s not your thing, it might not click well. I also can’t say much about how the others were written (I mean it’s a team book and all), but I was pretty happy with Kyle at the very least. But of course, it being an “old” comic, the writing and jokes may feel outdated by modern standards, so keep that in mind if you look into it.
Hi there, I was wondering what you think of the following hypothetical JLA line-up: Superman, Batman (Dick Grayson), Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner), The Flash (Wally West), Tempest, and Martian Manhunter.
My idea is that Clark, Diana and J’onn would be the established, old guard while Vic, Garth and Dick are the new recruits, and Kyle and Wally are the “in-between” generation of once-newbies who earned their respective spots on the team, at an earlier point in their careers - what are your thoughts?
Ps. Grant Morrison and Ivan Reis would need to be the creative team, of course
Hey there! First off, I'm going to be honest and say I'm not the most familiar with Victor's and Garth's stories. However, what little I do know of them tells me at the very least that the line up you have in mind could form a very amusing team, where the new recruits are the most eager/ enthusiastic/ overtly serious, compared to the chill "in-betweens"-- with maybe a little teasing on Kyle's side? (if it wasn't such a dire circumstance), while the seniors could go either way (from serious to amused if memory serves correctly). I don't know everyone SUPER well (not as well as I know Kyle anyway) to tell you more about team chemistry tho, but it didn't feel like there'd be any big clashes there? Unless there's something I'm missing with the new recruits haha. If any self-doubts or immaturity did happen to come out of the new ones, I'm sure Kyle, knowing him, would try his best to lend an ear and some advice (he's way too familiar dealing with insecurities and moments of immaturity). Wally would try to help too... but I almost feel like he might accidentally pour more fuel on the fire instead (his off-handed comments, well-meaning as they could be, sometimes miss the mark lmao).
Incidentally, there was an old JLA comic arc that did have most of the people you were talking about working together (minus Victor). You may have read it. It's called "JLA: The Obsidian Age" (JLA vol.1 #66-76) 2002. It's where I first met Garth haha. (Upcoming spoilers!)
It's one of the few old comics I've seen Kyle interacting with Dick too. IDK about the rest of the writing, but I felt Kyle's was pretty good. (You can tell my character bias hahaha). Other than that, that might be all I can mention on the subject? I hope that helped even a little!
Another moment for the two:

@brah3280 “I keep hearing Kyle is his fav (& I believe it) but does anyone know where that comes from?”
A lot of it comes from Kyle’s general interactions with Batman compared to the rest of the Lanterns in the comics.
Guy hates Batman (after that infamous one punch), Hal for a time was Parallax (Batman has bigass trust issues, so he never fully trusted Hal ever since), that and Batman’s cautious nature was always at odds with Hal’s gung-ho personality, John on the other hand is very loyal to Hal, so he could never see eye to eye with Batman and tend to get into arguments with him. As for the newer Lanterns, I suppose Kyle just had way more history working with Batman, so there’s trust there.
When Kyle joined Justice League he was a generation younger than the rest. So he looked up to the league members. After that one time he did a major fuck up from not listening to Batman he learned his lesson and seemed to put his trust in the senior members of the League.
There was a time Batman’s information on the Justice League’s weaknesses (failsafe in case anyone went rogue) fell into enemy hands and was used against them, and when the League had a vote on whether he stays or leaves, Kyle voted for him to stay. There would be a lot of times Kyle would doubt his place in the League too, but Batman would end up reassuring him in his own way. When given a choice between Hal or Kyle, Batman always would pick Kyle. When reading the comics from Kyle’s perspective/comics, Batman can feel like a mentor/father figure to him. He also tries to get the others like Guy to be civil with Batman.
So I suppose he feels like Batman’s fave Lantern because he gets along with Kyle the most and trusts him over the rest.
(That time younger Hal got lost in time, and Kyle feels replaced):

Every time Kyle has to go back to being a green lantern in space, Jason wakes up really early and starts cooking and stress baking for hours. Kyle ends up leaving with a selfconstructed picnic basket filled to the brim with full tupperware, wich lasts him about a week. Then he has to eat whatever food he finds in space and while it never bothered him before, now he can barely hold it down. He has convinced the guardians he absolutely needs earth food to survive, so he gets to go back to earth to replenish his food supply on a weekly basis. He gets to enjoy Jason’s company and Jason’s food, so really he has nothing to complain about. Jason however is especially smug, and although he complains about Kyle draining his groceries, seeing Kyle on a weekly basis has become something he can’t go without.
Really, it’s a win-win situation
cummies
"Look," Hal says, for what feels like the hundredth time. "I said I'm sorry."
"These were my favourite jeans," Kyle wails, also for what feels like the hundredth time. The cum stain stares back at them accusingly from where the pants are laid out across the couch, dark and foreboding. "Do you know how much they cost?"
"I'll get you new ones," Hal tries to bargain, ignoring the dubious look that Kyle shoots him. He's too nice to point out the fact that out of the two of them, it's Hal who struggles more with money. But how expensive can a pair of pants be, anyway? Thirty dollars?
"That's not the point," Kyle mutters, but he lets Hal pull him close anyway. He turns in his arms, nosing into his chest, dark hair tickling his chin. Wisely, Hal doesn't point out it was Kyle who jumped him, so really, this is his fault.
He also doesn't mention the tacky clear stain drying on the cushion of Kyle's couch. Maybe if Hal distracts him enough, Kyle won't notice that one.
I’ve read fics about these two and I haven’t recovered since wtf it’s so sweet definitely the ideal dynamic I wish Jason got in canon, anyway kinda poetic to end my year with a fanart of a rarepair

That time that Jason called Kyle ‘Dreamy‘.
I like how for jaykyle it’s universally agreed upon that this is the one jason ship where the pairing actually gets married in fanon
it doesn’t matter how or why it happens, jason todd gets married to kyle rayner, and then never tells his family about it because it’s none of their business
and is absolutely floored when they find out and he learns that kyle has bruce’s full approval as an in-law and welcomes him to the family
