like, James' decision to kill Mary is rooted in a genuine desire to ender her pain and suffering out of love but also part of it is rooted in frustration at feeling trapped and wanting his life back. the nature of what ending you get kinda determines the extent of those feelings. in endings like Leave we can kinda assume it was more like an intrusive voice in the back of his mind while in the Maria ending we can probably assume as he fails to learn anything that it was his primary driving motivation at heart.

Shu i think pretty undeniably sees his beloved partner (whom he loves) is in a pretty awful situation with no real way out of it. he also grew up in the toxic masculine culture around him and you can find tons of magazines like THIS IS WHAT REAL MEN DO and likely assumed the Red Capsules genuinely, sincerely would be able to help her make the decision she truly wanted- which is why he ultimately relents in Fox's Wedding. it's also likely in a more straightforward supernatural interpretation of events that the Doll was also directly manipulating him and using him as part of it's chess game against the kitsunes

but it's also pretty blatant that part of it is also rooted in that Shu wanted Hinako to chose him. it's blatant in the last cutscenes he also hoped that doing this would also result in Hinako choosing him and in the last Clinical Trial note available in NG++ he kinda hopes as much that the Red Capsules will guide her on a path that chooses him.

the kakura-makakura is said to grant the ability to reflect and speak with the inner self but also make the individual fall into a temporary state of unconsciousness that leaves them vulnerable to malevolent spirits. so after some time of taking the pills regularly, shu probably exposed himself to the presence of spirits and the tsukumogami started influencing his need to help hinako and his desire to stop the arranged marriage, enhancing those repressed feelings within him to serve its own interests against inari.

Shu understandably assumes Hinako hates being a woman (a lot of things she says to him give that impression), thus never wants to let her know he perceives her as such. He sticks to their whole "partner" shtick awkwardly to avoid the big ole elephant in the room they are both scared to acknowledge, for different reasons

But she doesn't hate being a woman, she just hates being stuck in the role of a woman society puts her in

Shu thinks he's doing what Hinako wants, but refusing to acknowledge Hinako as a girl also ignores/dismisses an important part of her identity
