Sleep, it turns out, won't last long for Effie. She wakes up to an ear ripping scream as well as movement next to her. Effie jumps out of bed and fumbles with the light switch which turns out a little more difficult than she thought. When she finally manages though, squeezing her eyes together because of the bright light, all the worries leave her body. At least the ones of an intruder.

The movement clearly comes from Haymitch who is tossing and turning, mumbling as well as screaming a lot of 'no's'. His face muscles are clenched.

Effie doesn't even think before she gets back on the bed. She should probably wake him up. Softly she whispers his name and repeats that it is just a nightmare and not real, hoping it will have some sort of effect. Only, it doesn't. She doesn't know what to do. Frustrated she starts taking his shoulders and shakes him. A mistake.

Effie waits patiently for Haymitch to tell her if Chaff and Finnick agreed. One and a half hours pass before he finally sets the phone down and smirks like his usual self at Effie. He doesn't even have to tell her how it went. Effie walks to him.

"Thank you." She says grinning before pressing a kiss to his cheek. It landed rather on the very corner of his mouth, but he doesn't seem to mind at all. He looks surprised but there is a glint of amusement in his eyes.

"They will arrive tomorrow. Get another house obviously." he informs her. "I am all yours at night." He winks and Effie makes a great impression of being annoyed at his impropriety even though there is a smile she can't quite shake off.

The night is peaceful. Effie slept through it without any problems. Sometimes you could hear birds singing their magical tunes in between the soft whistles of the wind against the trees. She buries herself a little deeper in the warmth next to her, not opening her eyes at all. It smells nice here. Like a mixture of coal and something else. Exactly like Haymitch does.

Effie rips her eyes open. It is still a little dark but not enough that she can’t make out what is going on right now. She wouldn’t even have to look, since she can feel her own body snuggled up to her partner. Her head is tugged under his chin and her leg hooked over his legs. Effie pushes herself back in hope that he didn’t notice and is still asleep. She must have rolled over in the middle of the night and snuggled up to him.

Oh my god.

The words are ringing in Effie’s ears over and over again. ‘You’re first case’. ‘I’m keeping you’. She is stunned and her heart is pounding into her ears. Haymitch seems to be a little confused by her expression.

“Are you gonna say something?” he asks her.

Effie doesn’t answer. She can not even think straight. Effie throws her arms around Haymitch’s neck and gives him the tightest hug she can manage. He seems surprised but doesn’t push her away. His own arms are finding their way around her little frame, awkwardly patting her back. He smells nice. A little like a mixture of coal. Probably the shampoo or perfume he is using. It smells very manly.

Her grip finally loosens again and his does too. Effie steps away, a little embarrassed. That was really improper of her. She looks at Haymitch but he didn’t seem to mind at all. His signature smirk is back on his face and he looks at her expectingly. The folder. Right. She focuses back on the object in her hand.

“It’s pink.” Effie states, raising one perfectly shaped eyebrow.

“Figured it’s a colour you like.” He shrugs and Effie can’t help the smile. “Not like it takes too long to notice that sweetheart.” He adds, nodding to her hair. Effie pretends not to notice his ear tips turning a light shade of pink and he doesn’t quite meet her eyes.

“What do you mean with ´I’ll keep you´?” Effie asks instead, turning the focus on something else.

Before they reach the changing room everyone gets their sports clothes. For the woman that means a simple top and some tight leggings.

It turns out, the locker room is not divided into man and woman. They will all be changing in the same room and Effie can’t help but feel a little uncomfortable at the very thought of undressing in front of Haymitch and his friend Chaff as well as many other men. To her luck, Portia seems to feel a little uncomfortable too, because her friend has left Cinna’s side and is now standing right with Effie.

With all the people inside, the locker room is quite cramped. They look around and end up picking two lockers at the very left of the room. They push their way through the room, squeezing between the other men and women. Portia takes the one next to the wall.

Portia makes a great job at keeping a conversation. She giggles and talks about all the stuff Cinna told her. For example, that he used to be in a fashion school. That seems logical, given the great taste in clothes. Portia keeps giggling and Effie can’t help but join in every once in a while. At least her friend seems happy about her partner.

“How is it going with Mister Rude.” Portia asks, playfully hitting Effie with her elbow. “He does not look that bad.” She winks and Effie gasps.

“Absolutely not.” Effie hisses. That is now way of thinking about Haymitch. “He is infuriating, rude and ill-mannered. Not even mentioning the fact that he straight up ignored me the whole walk down here.”

“He might be all those things, but he is handsome.” Her friend says and she shakes her head. “Turn around and take a good look at him before you deny it.”

Effie doesn’t want to, but she knows Portia won’t back off. She turns her head around rather slowly. It’s hard to spot him but in a matter of seconds her eyes find him. His back is facing her. His shirtless back. That man certainly has a very good body. His back is trained. Broad shoulders and strong arms you could die for. Maybe Portia wasn’t so wrong after all.

Effie Trinket always did things her mother hated. Moving to another city to become an FBI agent was one of them. When she gets assigned a partner who infuriates her every second, Effie's world turns upside down. Especially, when she finds out about a serial killer who has yet to be caught. Modern FBI AU

Today is the big, big, big day. The day Effie has been waiting on for nearly a year now. Weeks and months she studied for exam after exam. She cut short on any fun activities, hardly slept and still kept on working hard. She needed to be one of the best. A thinking pattern she clearly got from her mother. You need to be the best, otherwise you are just another someone that no one will remember, and Effie wants to be remembered.

It came as a shock for her whole family, when she announced she wants to become an FBI agent. Her mother was furious. Told her she would never come so far. Would never be smart enough. She was supposed to marry a rich man, settle down and have children. But Effie never wanted to be like that. Effie wants to be her own boss. She doesn’t need some man to give her a purpose in life. No. Effie Trinket is not someone’s wife, just because she has a high family name. Not someone’s trophy to win and brag about.

Her mother tried to talk her out of it, but Effie wouldn’t let that happen. In less than a few days her bags were packed, her apartment empty and herself sitting on the next plane. She wanted to start her life in a new city. As far away from her family as possible, even though the thought of being so far away hurt. Effie doesn’t want anyone to know her just because of her family. Doesn’t want to be known for her Sister’s model greatness or her mother’s actor career. Effie will be known because of her own success. Because of the hard work she puts into things. Because of the sleepless night’s she spends and the effort she makes to be one of the best.
