any settings suggestions for running specifically ff14 on the steam machine? thats the one thing im a little on the fence about
alright here’s whatchur gonna do waltuh:
- make sure you’re in an open map area that isn’t insanely crowded but still requires some oomph to process. dawntrail zones like urqopacha work great for this.
- ur gonna set ur game resolution to the native resolution of ur TV. if ur TV is 4K, bump it to 4K. just trust.
- ur gonna stay in display settings, go to “full screen gamma correction”, and lower it from 50 to the value that looks best and most contrast-y on your display. for me on my OLED tv that is LITERALLY 0.
- ur gonna go down to “frame rate” and lock to 60fps
- ur gonna switch to “graphics settings” and start by setting the top preset to “Maximum”
- set UI resolution to High
- IF YOUR FRAMERATE IS NOT AT OR AROUND 60 ALREADY depending on ur screen resolution, take the “3D Resolution Scaling” slider and set it to whatever gets you there consistently. if you’re running 4K, just set it to the lowest value which should be 50. this renders the actual game assets at a resolution that the steam machine can keep up with while still displaying UI elements and overall scaling at native resolution so they look crispy and legible.
- check “use low-detail models on distant objects”
- set “edge smoothing” to “TSCMAA + Camera Jitter”
- go to “movement physics” and set “enemies” to “simple”
- keep everything else at maximum OR adjust to personal taste
- ur gonna go to “other settings” and make sure “character and object quantity” is set to “automatic”, and “character display range” is set to either “extended” or “maximum”
- again, everything else keep default or to taste
these settings make sure the game looks awesome at 4K from TV distance, and genuinely runs at or near 60 in most cases. the only issues you’re gonna run into are when in a HEAVILY populated area but that’s par for the course with ffxiv. i get drops to maybe 40 fps or so in limsa. which is very workable! the steam machine is awesome for ffxiv so far, very acceptable performance.
