Where did the notion that James Potter died believing Lily and Harry were safe actually come from?

Because I don’t think that can possibly be true. His last desperate act was to shout a warning for Lily to run but he had just come from upstairs with Lily and Harry. He didn’t answer the door. Voldemort blasted it open. James had to have known in that final moment his family was more than likely dead. Him and Lily were unarmed. Harry was an baby. They were upstairs in a warded home with no where to go. Telling them to run was instinct. It was prayer. It was the desperate plea of man knowing it is futile.

There is no way James truly believed he had saved them. He could have hoped, wished, prayed, but there was never any real chance they would have gotten away. And standing on the stairs at the end of Voldemort’s wand, having lost most of his classmates to this very man, been hunted into hiding and still betrayed, he must have known that.
