We (my husband and I) are always searching for films that are both high quality and scary. So, we decided to watch movies and score them based on SCARINESS (up to 10 points- we each score 1-5), QUALITY (up to 4 points), ORIGINALITY (up to 3 points) and REWATCHABILITY (up to 2 points) with an optional point for a good twist (up to 20 points raw). In addition to the raw score movies gain and/or lose a point if they were remade(+1) or if they are a remake (-1), This evens out "new movie bias". Finally, to avoid ties we incorporate critic (rotten tomatoes), audience (RT/IMDB) and horror movie fan ratings (reelscary) which are averaged and converted to add up to .9999 points. It’s a four day weekend and the current heat wave is an excellent excuse for a scary movie night. Below are the ten best horror movies for a Fourth of July movie marathon.

8. Silver Bullet (1985)
In a small town, brutal killings start to plague the close knit community around Fourth of July. Marty Coslaw, a paraplegic boy, is convinced the murders are the doings of a werewolf.
7. Final Destination 3
This one makes the list for it’s gory fireworks death scene! The third installment in the series, it’s a good watch and reminder about firework safety.
6. You are not alone (2014)
Natalie is a college graduate visiting her hometown over the 4th of July. The night she arrives, she is stalked by a sociopathic killer.

Both interesting takes on pagan cults. I like both but neither is particularly scary. Both are weird and surprising but neither is particularly horrifying.
I love this breakdow but we expanded the subgenres a bit. This is mostly for Halloween-time when we do our Horror movie bracket so that we can ensure that we pick movies that are actually suited to go up against each other.
We also combined Gore with Killer as most of the gore movies are actually slashers and very few gore films are of interest to us anyway. We also collapsed the “Zombie” sub-genre above and instead allowed for differentiation in the movie villain field. We try to be as true to the movie as possible but in some cases (especially psychological films) it can be hard to choose a subgenre.
