Was going through the Brilliant minds tag and seeing that one of the (if not THE) post who have the most notes is one comparing Brilliant minds to House AND people in the notes criticising brilliant minds made me very sad (I know the post had so many notes because of the house MD tag but the notes of people criticising brilliant minds, sometimes really harshly and disgustingly but admitting to never even having watched one episode are yes, wild to me)
So I thought I could resume why Brilliant Minds is good in his own right and not at all comparable to House and why you all should give it a chance : (there will be spoilers)
- Brilliant minds have a main character who is gay and has his coming out story presented in flashback from when he was a teenager/young adult. (And yes he's a nice doctor, I know, shocking...)
- the same gay character have a medical condition who is talked about and accepted by the other characters and he's also very intelligent
- every episode we see the personal past life of the main character through flashbacks and they are so beautifully filmed and play on sound and colours and we really can feel what the main character felt, it's really well written and acted.
- the main characters have some interns, yes like a lot of medical shows. It's pretty normal because it's also like that irl. Anyway, those interns all have a well rich history and BM play on presenting them in the first episode as some stereotypes but then develop the characters and we see they're in fact rich and complex characters. One of them is also a queer woman so yeah this show has more than one main queer characters !
- the main character has a best friend who he's known for decades who is a black woman who is a successful and good psychiatrist.
- this woman has such a good storyline for her during the season. She was cheated on by her husband and they're now separated etc... yes, maybe it's not a new concept etc... but she don't want to forgive the infidelity and the story always say that the husband was 100% at fault, I can't remember the last time I saw a cheating story where the woman cheated on said all that I wanted her to say. And let me tell you, without spoilers, the story goes wild and it's really good to see such a good actress play this storyline.
- the main character works for his mom and let's just say their relationship is interesting to say the last. Like all the other characters, the mom is not just a mom. She's also a successful, intelligent and powerful woman who is in charge of a hospital. Her personal story is wild. Her past love life and how she was as doctor, etc... would want so much more of her, don't want to spoil too much, but her approach of her son, his intelligence, his gayness etc... that we can see in the flashback is so interesting and so well done by the writers but also the different actors and especially the actress playing the mom.
- the show also develops the relationship between the main character and his dad. I know maybe cliche but not how it's written in brilliant minds. It talks about the dad's mental issues, his death/disappearance and how it affected the main character. Frankly I saw a lot of "mom had mental issues but I loved her" in other shows, can't remember the last time it was the dad so that's pretty new and refreshing for me. The actor is really good and we can feel the bond between the main character and his dad really well.
- the main character has a love story with another gay man also doctor in the same hospital and they have adult conversations and resolutions about their relationship, it's just nice to see queer older characters acting and talking about their relationship like adults.
- so now for the different medical cases, yes it's a one case/episode kind of show, not always, sometimes we have two, but yeah like a lot of shows it's like that. But the way the cases are approached, talked about and especially FILMED is something I've never seen before. The cinematography is insane. The show plays with colours and sound and the scene from the cases that explains how and why the patient is sick could be cut and put together and we would have a beautiful short movie. If you like movie's scenes where it tries to recreate wild and weird dreams then you will LOVE Brilliant minds !
- the patients are not miraculously in perfect health at the end of the episodes. Every case explains why and how the patient is going to live with his sickness, the doctors are here to help the patient know their medical condition and help them adjust to it. It's really interesting and also refreshing, I've never seen that in a medical show.
And in 10 episodes, we already had 2 queer patients, even one with an episode centered around his queerness in a way, and how it relates to the main character's own story, so the show really isn't afraid to write queer stories and characters.
Anyway, I'm gonna stop here, hope I didn't forget something but yeah I don't really understand the comparison with House in any way. Because yes, one could say it's an intelligent doctor having patients and interns, but it's literally what is real life. Real Doctors can be intelligent and have patients and interns. It's like if we begin to compare every cop show or every lawyer show ? It's weird to me, yes, house and brilliant minds are both medical shows but brilliant minds have queer characters (and not just one...) and one of them is literally the main character, the show has flashbacks scenes, the show has a diverse cast who each have deep and rich and complex personal history, sometimes I feel like the show is more on the fantasy/science fiction side than the medical side because of how beautifully the cases are filmed. So no I don't think it can compare to House, be it by the characters, the cases or the way the show is filmed.
Be it that you loved House or hated it, for all those points, I really think you should give Brilliant minds a try 😉
(if I made a grammatical error or something else, please don't hesitate to tell me, English is not my first language and this post had some long and difficult words lol)
One of the many things Brilliant Minds gets right is how each character's sexual identity is shared. I am SO GRATEFUL that we are finally getting a good TV series where being queer is NOT the major plot and there's no drama or weirdness involved in sharing that with the viewer. We saw it with Oliver, Josh, and now Dana. It's just added to the story in such a seamless way where you feel you knew it all along. Queerness is not their defining characteristic. It's just part of who they are. I love this show for that.
Omg yes ! This makes me so happy !!!
I was hoping for more lgbtq+ characters so it's the best news ever. I can't wait to know more.
This show just keeps on giving. Michael Grassi the man you are <3

It’s almost certain that Wolf has a Wikipedia page about him given the way people talk about him and he’s definitely created new treatment methods worthy of Wikipedia “fame.”
Given his Luddite tendencies and his patients first mentality, I think he’d be taken aback or even horrified to learn about his page. And that has been amusing me.
Yes ! Such a good idea, It would amuse me too !
(if you don't mind me adding)
As soon as the residents learn about Wolf and Nichols relationship, they're spending hours writing about the relationship under the wiki section Personal life. (like "once, Dr. Wolf kissed Dr. Nichols in the hospital's utility closet " Ericka saw them go there and Dana saw them exit it with their clothes and hair all disheveled so she knew)
Dana is on the computer writing the juicy details (that either she imagined or that she saw first hand "if they didn't want those things to be public than they shouldn't mess around in public" she defend herself), Ericka interjects but describes her some romantic moments to add, Van just doesn't think it's a good idea and Jacob is just laughing and wants to make some bet about how much time it will be before Wolf learn about all of it.
Oliver eventually learns about it and makes them delete everything.
They do but then some time after, the section reappears with some little "facts" added. So little that nobody see them at first. They're not really private or detailed things, just some things like "Dr. Wolf likes chocolate" etc...).
Oliver doesn't read all of his wiki page after the first time so he doesn't see the added facts, just see quickly when the personal life section is updated and ask the interns to delete it. The interns think it's a Wikipedia bug so they delete it again. But after the 4th time, they notice the additional notes. The facts are not so little anymore and they appear to be more "sentimental" ("Dr. Wolf's boyfriend, Dr. Nichols likes hearing Dr. Wolf's snores" etc... ). The interns enjoy reading them so they don't admit they're not the ones writing it. We even see Van say it's wrong to read them but then he's alone and discreetly reading the section and even maybe getting emotional.
Now that the facts are more detailed, the interns understand that they must be written by the only person who would know Wolf enough to write them, so of course it must be Nichols.
Yes, Josh copied all of the personal life section before the interns deleted it the first time and decided to paste all of it again on the wiki page and add some of his little boyfriend's facts but as the relationship evolve to something more serious, Josh couldn't help himself and added some sort of declaration of love like the snoring bit, or a "dr Nichols love dr. Wolf's smile" etc..."
Oliver still doesn't know about Josh's additions until patients begin to mention them ("Dr. Wolf, I know you were highly recommended to me but I must admit I don't know if I can trust a doctor who divulge all his boyfriend's personal life on Wikipedia, poor Dr. Nichols mustn't be so happy ...") so Oliver finally decides to read his wiki page again and he sees all the added facts.
At first he's baffled but then decides mischievously to use the page at his advantage and write some notes that he now knows Josh will read ("Dr. Wolf would like for Dr. Nichols to stop moving his plants every morning, even if he needs the place to drink his coffee" , "Dr. Wolf hopes to take Dr. Nichols to a rock concert Saturday so he can finally hear some good music.")
(maybe it goes on for months... years, and maybe one day one of them decides to use the wiki page to make his marriage proposal to the other...)

as a gay man im so tired of the lack of self reflection in the majority of the 911/buddie fandom, and constantly running into posts that are filled with homophobia and overly vilify tommy. this isn't to say he's perfect, he's a flawed character, but that's what makes him human. all of the 911 characters are flawed. and the vilification is always coming from people who believe in gay eddie, which i really don't care about headcanon-wise, but it just makes so many of them hypocrites. you can't say tommy is a disgusting misogynist because he "used" abby, and then base your entire view of eddie's gayness on the fact that he isn't a good boyfriend to the women he dates (and literally uses them for childcare). like ????????? are you fuckin dumb? yes. anyway.
and y'all being willfully obtuse about ryan's pov about combating growing up in machista culture and unlearning that is not fucking cute either btw. you're fucking annoying and awful.
like as both a latino and a gay man, it is so glaringly obvious that the vast majority of you have never had any substantial interactions with latine people or gay men. yet you claim a /fictional/ one as your fave and whole personality. ok. and the homophobia i and other queer men in this fandom have pointed out isn't about disliking or being indifferent to tommy, it's the shoddy ass reasoning you come up with for hating him and the way you talk about him. we see it very clearly, you are not clever.

josh nichols being an icon in brilliant minds 1x8
My investigation of the askmen subreddit has already been very...enlightening.
So I found a thread where a gay guy was asking about "gay male loneliness" and how he could go about addressing that in his own life. This subreddit talks constantly about male loneliness, mind you. So this is a fascinating question because it takes women, who they'd usually see as causing the issue, out of the equation.
Let's take a look at the currently most upvoted comment:
For context: The OP never mentioned sex as a factor, just loneliness. So why do the straight guys in this thread mostly jump to talking about sex then?
Why do they assume that if they could be having tons of casual sex, they couldn't be lonely?
Because that's what they actually mean when they talk about "male loneliness". Even in other treads, I noticed that it always goes in that direction and they always reject any suggestions of finding a community and opening up emotionally to their bros.
They aren't actually interested in connecting with others. They just want to get their dicks wet. What a surprise.
There's also another aspect of it here that I find interesting.
The guys on this sub just aren't emotionally mature enough to understand that you can have sex twice a day every day and still be lonely because they don't understand the difference between intimacy and sex.
A lot of straight men see girlfriends and wives as the solution to their loneliness because they expect them to do the emotional labor necessary for connecting with others and finding a purpose in life. They were not taught how to do that because they were raised with the expectation that a woman would eventually do it for them.
Loneliness comes from a lack of belonging, purpose and community. If you don't have a woman to drag you along, you will have to achieve that on your own. But that's work and they don't want to do the work.
They want a woman who will serve as their community, their purpose and their belonging. Because of course they do, who doesn't like it when hard things are done for them?
I even tried asking once: if women and queer people are capable of building communities and supporting each other, which makes them (supposedly) less lonely, why are they unable to do the same thing? But I only got one answer which was basically "well if it was really that easy, there would be no male loneliness epidemic". Which in my mind implies that straight men are uniquely incapable of having friends.
Because this cannot be stressed enough, apparently: You cannot expect Eddie's parents to recognize he's experiencing another "mental health crisis" when the show is not recognizing it as a mental health crisis! Eddie hasn't spoken to his parents about his grief. Eddie hasn't been to therapy again. Eddie met with "hot priest" just because Tim wanted "hot priest" back to make a joke about Eddie getting hit on by dudes. Eddie's one episode of reflection ended with him dancing in his underwear. When he could have been calling his parents. Or his son. Writing something. Praying. Anything to illustrate that he was making strides towards healing. And then he was fine. Instead of saying everyone else is the problem for analyzing scenes at face value (much like the GA is doing, mind you), why don't you try focusing on the guy (and his team) who didn't think Eddie's story needed to be explored as thoroughly as you would like?
