Jonathan taking Eddie's role in season 4!
β’ || The Byers going to Hawkins for Spring Break instead of Mike going to Lenora.
β’ || Jonathan is in a bad place and he's caught by Chrissy smoking some weed in his car while he waits for Will and his friends to come back from the Arcade or some.
β’ || Chrissy thinks that weed could help her relax about what Vecna is making her see. So she goes to Jonathan to try and buy some, another day, but he refuses and mid explanation on why he won't sell, she's killed by Vecna.
β’ || Jonathan is alone, doesn't know what to do. He has seen many things, but nothing like that. So he runs and is eventually framed for Chrissy's murder.
β’ || As soon as the party finds out, they go to try and find Jonathan and when they find him, he tells them everything that happened.
β’ || Dr. Owens comes to Hawkins and he and Jane (with her consent, ofc) leave to try and get back her powers.
β’ || Nancy, Steve and Robin are the ones taking food to him every day and keeping him up with everything that is happening because Will is being watched more up close because he's Jonathan's brother.
β’ || All those Vecna things are discovered and it cuts for Will and Jonathan being the ones going with Nancy, Robin and Steve instead of Eddie and Dustin.
β’ || Jonathan is NOT letting the bats go back to the Creel's house because Nancy is there. And he's NOT letting his brother die either. So he cuts all connections that Will could have to the Upside Down and starts drawing the bats' attention to him.
β’ || And when Will, finally, manages to jump into the Upside Down, he sees Jonathan on the ground, all bloodied and whimpering from pain.
β’ || Jonathan dies in Will's arms. He begs Will to tell Nancy how much he loves her and tells him to not be afraid of who he is, because he loves him exactly that way.
β’ || He'd also mutter something like as to thank mom for everything and to tell Jane he was glad to have her as a little sister.
β’ || Later, when Vecna disappears after 'killing' Max, Steve, Robin and Nancy come back to go back to the normal dimension. They see the scene, Will cradling Jonathan's body. And while Steve and Robin are too shocked to even mutter a word, Nancy lets a scream erupt in the wild and falls to her knees next to his body, tears falling over his cold face.
β’ || It's Steve and Robin that have to help both Nancy and Will get up and help them realize Jonathan's gone and there's nothing they can do anymore because both of them are in a state of shock and not wanting to let go of his body.
β’ || Jonathan dies for a town that never looked at him like a normal person. For a town that hated him and thought he was the devil for killing people.
β’ || However they manage to take him to the normal dimension and give him a funeral, and ever since, Will, Joyce, Jane and Nancy go to visit him every single day, the same way Lucas goes to visit Max at the hospital.
β’ || Then in season 5 we could see Will and Joyce's grieving. Will not being able to cope with his death and starts drifting apart from everyone but Jane and Mike don't let him. Joyce regretting not giving him more attention. Nancy's alcohol coping mechanism being treated as something serious and not some joke for a break up scene. Jane blaming herself because she didn't get her powers in time to save him sooner.

I do enjoy a Jonathan gets taken instead AU but any time I try and have serious thoughts about it all I come up with is him exploring the woods in the upside down, finding one of the portals, crawling through it and being like, well, that was an upsetting 48 hours, time to never think about it again or tell anyone about that! And just goes back to his life.
