the flame emperor,   his father,   his future  ( or lack thereof,   he supposes,   bitter )  …    

he has plenty of thoughts,   and she will hear them all in due time.   but she will not have them presently,   not when she has already taken  so much.   not in the waning hours before the first dawn of war in this cramped imperial camp,   a miserable,   bleak home compared to the one he has lost.

his breath leaves in a flat huff,   comes back a bit softer,   if only at its torn,  frayed edges.

          Well, it was worth a shot.

          What reason would any of her classmates have for wanting to join her in this hell? She betrayed them. Them, the church, their homes, their lives... Everything. But there were still people with her, despite how she’d lied to them all. “...” Edelgard was silent, eyes now fixated on the ground at their feet. Ferdinand had every right to be angry with her. He, especially, was hurt greatly by her recent actions. But why did he stay, despite the pain she’d caused? How could she possibly deserve his loyalty, after all she’d done? “ --- Alright. I understand.” She rose her gaze back to his -- fluttering to the side first, then finally to where she wanted it -- in a forced attempt to keep her composure.

          Oh, my... Where did Ferdinand find such sweet-smelling tea? Last she checked, it was sold out in the marketplace because their teacher had bought every last bit of it. But here it was, like he’d gone out of his way to find some regardless. For a brief moment, eyes widened at the thought, but soon softened at the same. He really didn’t have to do that, but he did. “Ah...”

          “ --- Thank you, Ferdinand.” The smallest grin crossed onto her lips, half because she’d just remembered what else she had in her dorm that would go amazingly well with this. “Actually, I have some cake in my dorm that would complement this.”

          A pause, the rim of her cup barely tapping to her lips. Yes, it wasn’t news to say that Edelgard had been through quite a bit in her short life. There were also pieces of it that were known to only a select few, however, and Petra wasn’t one of those people. For a brief moment, she wondered if someone had told her that there was more to the Adrestian heiress than meets the eye, but it would be more obvious. “Yes, you’re right. A small price to pay for one’s safety.”

         “--- But so have you,” she added, ending her sentence with a sip of her tea. The troubles that Petra has had to face as a result of empirical relations with Brigid were well-known to Edelgard, and she hated the thought of the princess suffering because of them. There wasn’t much she could do to ease worries, though. Both of them were still students, and one of them had their learning restricted. The most Edelgard could offer before she took the throne was her sympathy.

          “ --- I’m not hungry, though.” An immediate response, almost sounding forced. It was as if she’d planned it for if someone were to come up to her room, but it still sounded unnatural. It was a free day at the monastery, and most, if not all students were outside of their dorms in some way. All except her, however. And Bernadetta, perhaps, but Bernadetta enjoyed the indoors. Edelgard hadn’t left her room since the evening prior, having last been seen sprinting from the Black Eagles classroom to the upstairs dorms. It was a stir that she would’ve preferred to not have caused, but the letter Hubert handed her was far too important to read in the company of her classmates. She’d asked Hubert to head back home for a brief visit to inquire into the status of her father’s health. She knew it had been failing, but to the extent that it was had shocked her. She’d have to take the throne much, much sooner than she thought. She wanted-- no, needed to visit her father beforehand. She had to check up on him with her own two eyes. But how could she leave the monastery to do so without causing any suspicion? She’d been trying to come up with an easy solution ever since she ran up here, but each possible outcome also gave her a possible problem.

          Of course, not leaving her room for half a day meant that she’d gone without eating an actual meal since then. Thankfully, she had some madeleines left over from last night, when Hubert left a few packages of them at her door. At times like this, with all of the thoughts swirling through her mind, she’d forget to breathe without someone reminding her to do so.  “But thank you for thinking of me; I appreciate it.” Even more forced calmness. She hadn’t moved from her position on the bed --- half in fetal position, back to the closed door --- since she’d heard the knock, but...

          This is mostly a test ‘cause my actual photo promo doesn’t seem to want to show up anywhere, but please give this a like and/or reblog if you’d like to RP with an Edelgard von Hresvelg from Fire Emblem: Three Houses! It’s been a very long time since I’ve been anywhere near the Fire Emblem RPC myself (I believe since Fates came out?), so I’m not entirely sure where everyone is hanging out at!
