sage of shadows.

   Sheik’s decision to become the Sage of Shadows was entirely linked to Princess Zelda and Link and his emotional / mental place with them. Initially, right after waking back up ten years old, Sheik had struggled immensely. Overwhelmed with the memories, his body not responding how he needed it to, it led him to be reckless. His tiny body was unable to handle the adult emotions crushing through him and it led to him lashing out. He picked fights, primarily with the guards, took his anger out on training and breaking things in Impa’s house. He blamed her, he blamed Zelda, it was easier to blame everyone around him until that anger eventually focused inward on himself. 

   Eventually, when the anger settled and he was left with only his thoughts and memories that anger turned to guilt and self-hatred. His problems with how he handled the journey with Link, his problems with being unable to help Zelda now, all of it piled up inside him and he felt a bit like it was crushing him. He tried though, he did try to live a normal life. Because that was what they had fought for, it’s what Link sacrificed for, and to immediately give up felt like an insult to all of that. So he tried to stand beside Zelda, to be the Queensguard and a Sheikah Warrior. 

   But it really wasn’t meant for him. Sheik is a restless person, he constantly is on edge, looking over his shoulder and worrying. He’s reckless with his own life, overconfident in fighting, he willingly gives too much of himself for his duty to the Royal Family and that isn’t something he can just turn off. Even when Zelda needed him to, even when she needs more of a person than she does a soldier at her side. Sheik could tell she missed Impa, if she didn’t outright say it the way she looked at him expecting someone else did. 

   He went to the Kokiri Forest before he went to the Temple, wanting to see the Hero at least once, and there the Great Deku Tree informed him that Link went to Termina. Link leaving Hyrule entirely, as if he was trying to escape everything, all of them, was a bit of the breaking point. Every connection he had was shattered, every person he knew eventually left, the last thing he could do at the very least to fix any of it was to give Zelda back Impa. So that the Princess could finally have her heart settled and the person that mattered to her most. So that Impa could be free and try to rebuild their Tribe. So that there was some sort of balance to all of this. 

   To Sheik, in the grand scheme of things, his life was far less valuable than the rest of it all and he really had nothing left to live for. 

   So he went to the Shadow Temple, he trekked his way to the Sanctum and he sat there and prayed with the Goddess Harp until someone listened to him. Until he was finally allowed into the Sacred Realm and the Goddesses granted him the chance to change places with Impa. It’s not a decision he regrets, it’s not one he’ll ever regret. He can’t let himself, because there is no taking it back. It’s never something he’ll be able to undo. But more than that, he genuinely believes it was the right decision. The choice that he had to make and should have been from the very beginning. 

hc + ☕ for a drink-themed headcanon Thematic Headcanons.

   Sheik takes very poor care of himself, especially during his journey with Link. He got so used to not having much that he barely remembers to eat or drink in what would be considered a healthy way. During his journey with Link, he survived off of whatever he could forage for and water, during his second life in the beginning that turned to eggs, rice and mostly tea. He doesn’t drink alcohol usually, and the only time he does indulge in it is when he’s at a special occasion. He’s a reckless drunk, he wants to go out and do things that are very silly. That he’s never gotten to do. 

   Normally, Sheik drinks tea. He prefers it hot, but Sun Tea is good to him too. Sheik doesn’t like sweets so he takes his tea with lemon usually. Green Tea is usually what he’ll go for, it’s the easiest to get his hands on and he doesn’t need to go grocery shopping for. Sheik can forage for his own tea too, since he’s very familiar with plants, their types and what they’re used for. Having training in his potion lessons with Granny. 

   Coffee isn’t something he likes. It's far too bitter. But he’ll drink it if he’s very exhausted and he wants to be awake. And he can drink a lot of it when he really needs to. Sheik can force anything in his system when he needs to, like the red potions that he downs like they’re nothing but water. 

   Which brings us to the potion part of the drink headcanon. 

   Sheik survived off of potions. Granny trained him after he dropped himself on her one to many times bleeding to death, to make his own potions. Sheik took this as a way to keep himself alive when he would otherwise be far too injured to keep going. So during his adventure with Link, he drank potions like they were water and he always kept them on him. They repaired the worst of the wounds, he stuffed the others with cloth and he rushed off to continue doing what he needed to do. 

   This continued into his second life. To Sheik, a potion is easier than trying to patch himself up, especially when that is difficult to do alone. So he drinks potions, and drinks them and drinks them until his body rejects them. 

   This has had the effect of making them actually work less on him. His body has grown a resistance to them, a tolerance and they don't work. Not as quick as they should and not as good as they should. This results in him drinking even more of them as if that will actually balance the problem out.

Sheik's favorite thing to do, obviously, is to play the harp. Learning new music, idly playing it, and actually playing it properly is one of the most calming things for him. When he's not thinking and just plucking at it restlessly, his body does naturally play the songs he taught the Hero of Time. His body memorizing those naturally and it's practically second nature for him to lean on them.

Aside from the harp Sheik greatly enjoys reading, writing and translating books. One of the missions of the Sheikah Tribe was to record history for the Royal Family. Keeping records and ensuring that the legends stay alive and passed down through history to the next generation that would need to know what to do. Although it is a task his family had taken on, it is actually something Sheik likes. He knows all the legends, has written them himself hundreds of times, he can recite most of them from heart. Even if it wasn't something he had to do, he would do it anyway.

In that same regard he can make leather, preserve books, and restore them.

A more normal (?) thing he likes doing is bombchu bowling. What was at one point a training exercise from Impa, practicing aim and calculations, it became something he enjoyed. The mental math, the calculations, the fact he can blow things up and not cause harm is very much enjoyable to him.

Sheik was given a very rough, vague idea, of what Link was supposed to do and where he was supposed to go. A list of the sages and then a list of the songs to teach. Impa had left it entirely up to him how to plan out Link's journey, where he would start and where he would go. To teach him the songs, the magic needed to be rooted in the places it would take Link. Meaning, he had to meet him there and teach him them. The Serenade of Water being taught in the Ice Cavern worked because Lake Hylia flows into Zora's Domain.
