how long had it been ? years, he’s sure, at the very least. perhaps one, or even two ? as if it really matters. a woman he was once to marry, freed by the gruesome plague and unfortunate circumstances his family had gone through. what would margaret think, if she knew jasper used her death as a way to escape a potential marriage ? not on purpose, but things had worked out that way and he went with the flow. now, here they stood, and she was just as beautiful – but god, did she already know it. “ if i had done that on purpose, this would have been spilled, ” jasper teases, lowering his hand with the cup of wine. he takes a long sip, eyes not faltering from johanna’s gaze. he always has the most fun when he’s pushing her buttons… or, undoing her’s. “ like i said, that was an accident. if i wanted to speak to you… well, i would have kept my distance, as you would have found your way to me eventually. or, are we still pretending that our meetings are always circumstantial ? ”
anna wasn’t sure if she were happy or annoyed to see jasper, honestly. it wasn’t as if they were friends - they had been betrothed once, and neither had really wanted to marry the other. but she couldn’t deny that they had fun together. their relationship was built on mutual attraction and a mutual desire to drive the other insane. jasper was a menace with a far-too-large ego, and yet johanna couldn’t help but pick the old banter back up. “of course, any excuse to get me to take off my dress,” anna replied dryly, knowing it was the truth. “but it’s too pretty to ruin, and you would never willingly spill wine.” it wasn’t as if she would either. she loved to drink as much as the next person, and it was a party, after all. she held his gaze while he drank, feeling a flush creep up her neck. why did he have to have such an affect on her? it would be much easier beating him at their little game if he didn’t. “i would have approached you?” she asked, laughing at the statement that they both knew was true. “i think you give yourself far too much credit. after all, there are plenty of princes here tonight. i don’t have to settle.”

anna twirled around the dance floor, enjoying every moment of the ball. it felt like ages since she had last laughed this hard and she was determined to make the most of the festivities. she was tired of thinking about the loss of her father, the fear she felt towards her half-brother, the chaos of austria in general. she was tired of thinking. tonight was for herself - not for her family or country. grinning flirtatiously at her partner, anna thanked them for the dance and excused herself, wandering off in search of another glass of wine.
before she found one, though, she noticed a woman she had never met before. it wasn’t entirely odd; she knew several royals here, but not everyone. the world was far too wide for that. approaching the woman, anna offered her a friendly smile. “lovely evening, is it not?” she asked, finally snagging a glass of wine off a passing servant with a tray. “are you enjoying yourself?”
he’s humming along in tune with the music, and if someone were watching him, they could see the skip in his step for but a moment. the festivities are an excellent distraction, apart from the insensitive theme. reading the invite had excelled his anger at what england, what his family had gone through and how it seemed as if everyone was fine with moving on. to pretend like people hadn’t died ! jasper had decided that fine, if no one wanted to care anymore, neither would he. dressed in proper attire, that’s something he never gets wrong, he moves throughout the ballroom with a charming grin plastered onto his face. jasper spins to retrieve a glass of wine from one of the roaming platters, only to practically knock himself into whoever was opposite of him. he reaches out to steady the both of them, though his main focus is on the glass in his hand, raising it up over his head for protection. “ my most sincere apologies, ” he insists, a chuckle rolling off his tongue. “ though it was an accident, i can’t say i’m devastated to be in such attractive company, ”
the lively atmosphere of the ball was just as intoxicating as the glass of wine johanna held in her hand. it felt incredible to be celebrating once more after five long years of isolation, although she had wondered briefly if they had the right to. after all, she should technically still be in mourning for her father. anna did not like to think of that, though - she did not like to linger on most things that caused her pain. drinking the last sip of her wine, anna felt her cheeks flush from the drink. the music was wonderful; she had been dancing most of the night. now, she was taking a moment to catch her breath. just as she thought about returning, someone nearly knocked her over. anna allowed the man to steady her, thankful that her glass was empty and her dress had not been ruined. turning her attention back to the man, she began to assure him that it was fine until she saw who it was. prince jasper of england. of course. “an accident?” she repeated, raising an eyebrow at the english prince. “i rather think you did it on purpose.” it had been so long since she had seen him, yet it felt natural to return to their usual bickering. “if you wanted to speak to me, you could have found a better excuse.”

history
princess johanna of austria was born in the spring of 1620. the third ( legitimate ) habsburg child was often left to her own devices - after all, they already had an heir and a spare. what did they need her for ?
she enjoyed spending her time running wild on the palace grounds, often hiding from her governess when she had the chance. she got into mischief regularly; she was certainly a bit of a problem child. but that seemed to be the only time people paid attention to her - when she was causing trouble.
of course, the older she got, the more she learned about her place in this world. men built empires; women secured them. it was her duty to marry a prince and secure a strong alliance for her family’s sake.
and, well, it isn’t that she likes being a pawn. of course she doesn’t. if it were up to her, she would never have to marry for convenience, but that just isn’t the case. so, as she grew up, she found she had a natural talent for flirting. she’s charming, and has a quick wit. she can be quite alluring.
over the years, she’s had several betrothals that have fallen through for one reason or another. either her father has backed out of the alliance, or someone else has broken things off. either way, she remains unwed, and she finds she doesn’t always mind it.
the plague effected austria, of course, although johanna had the luxury of not noticing it as much as some of the other royals. at least, until her father passed. it was unexpected and abrupt, and it’s caused the entire country to be thrown into chaos a bit. nothing like a good ol’ fashioned succession shake up, am i right?
she’s worried about what would happen if her half-brother does inherit the crown, although she tries not to show it. there’s a chance that she may go from being a princess to being no one over night, which terrifies her, especially if there’s an actual coup and things turn violent. but, she doesn’t want anyone to know that she’s actually worried, because that would mean being vulnerable, and anna’s never going to let others see her like that.
personality + headcanons
while she formally goes by johanna ( yo - hana ), those she is close to call her anna ( ahna ). she doesn’t mind either name, although i imagine she’s only allowed those she is friends with to call her anna.
she can be a bit...vain ? she’s a flirt and she likes attention. being adored is better to her than anything else, which has led to her being a bit shallow. she does see herself as being valuable to people because of her looks or the charming part she plays. it shocks her when people like her for her.
she’s not particularly chaste. she is religious, but she’s also a woman who likes having fun, and part of that comes from fooling around. she’s bisexual, and has definitely had affairs with people of all genders, although she keeps all of it on the down low. she’s got to keep up her perfect woman image, you know ?
johanna has a natural, charismatic energy to her. she’s often found at the center of a party, telling some funny story to make the group laugh. she loves to drink and dance and have fun.
while she is immature, i think she’s got a good heart and does genuinely care for others. she just tends to put herself first. but in her defense, if she doesn’t, who will ? it’s not as if most people care about the second daughter in a royal family. people probably think she’s an airhead, but she can be quite cunning. she doesn’t mind playing the role of the vivacious, flirtatious idiot if it means she gets what she wants in the end.
the only thing she cares about besides being adored, sex, and her friends is music ?? she’s been playing the harpsichord since she was a little girl and she loves it. she even composes her own music, although she doesn’t show that off very much.
even if i use the occasional brunette lily james gif, she is blonde. picture her with long blonde curls like cinderella lily james.
wanted connections
former betrothals - she’s had several of these fall through for various reasons, and i would love to see her still interacting with them. maybe there are some complicated feelings there, or maybe they’re glad not to have ended up together. either way, there’s always a chance she may still flirt with them if there’s a possibility that they could end up arranged again. although, if they aren’t into women or her specifically, she’d back off 100%. and if they’re married now, she would not flirt with them. she’s not interested in destroying any marriages.
a current betrothal - someone she’s still engaged to now ?? likely it was set up by her father before his death, so maybe this person or their family are thinking of breaking it off with her now that she may not be a princess for much longer ? or maybe they’re just waiting it out until the line of succession in austria is more settled. 100% could be interested in her romantically/sexually or not at all, i am into it no matter what. they do not have to be endgame but also they could be.
former lovers - once she realized she had zero control over her married life, but she could control what happened behind closed doors, she began having affairs. they’ve always got to be careful because she could never had a child out of wedlock, and she wouldn’t want her reputation ruined. still, she’s likely hooked up with a few royals and maybe even a servant or two. she’s bi and into people of all genders. maybe things are awkward now, or maybe they’re pleased to see one another again ?
friends - please give her actual friends who like her for her, it’ll be so shocking. i’d also love some fake friends who don’t care about her. those are also very fun and very in character for her.
enemies - maybe someone knows she’s vapid and shallow ? maybe she can’t stand someone else ? there are plenty of possibilities here !
