Some of this IS canon and some of it is canon but not as MUCH and some is purely new headcanon of what is commonly accepted in other forms of media Barry is in. I am happy to take thoughtful critiques and discussions but I am not here to argue that certain canon elements are better than what I’m choosing because I don’t care what the canon elements are or if your muse uses them or not.

if other barry’s want to use anything mentioned here that is not explicitly already canon in the various forms of media DC has, please feel free but also credit where you can.

Barry is capable of manipulating the fabric of space and time by applying a new kind of force to reality. This force, dubbed “the speed force”, allows him to move at speeds that he does as he is in a sense generating a force that folds through space and time so he can get from point A to point B as quickly as he wants. 

This would suppose that the accident somehow allows his molecules, and atoms, to react in ways that are not physically possible and thus a lot of what he knows about his powers are still heavily theoretical at best. Simply put he would be at ease with shrugging and saying “We Just Don’t Know” and would much rather work on figuring out what he can do versus how it works.

At least at first.

He will soon (or has, verse dependent!) realize he’s not only generating a force, he’s kind of become something of a vessel for an already existing force. Think of it like if the speed force is a constant ring of electricity, then one arc of it is currently speared through Barry and he can use that to push it out of himself and around himself or tap into it to move with the force the way certain things do, like photons or whatever.  So he, himself, is not the true source but is capable of pulling it into himself and expelling it as needed to manipulate time and space.

The easiest way of doing this is through movement. He can move faster than anyone because he is skipping all the physics that normally apply to any given situation (that are known) and he is bending space and time to do this. Subjectively, when tapping into this ability, the world around Barry seems to move slower or come to a stand still, as he moves from point to point to point through his bent time/space vectors. 

This is NOT fully controlled by Barry, however, as is reflected in certain needs that come up with his use of energy in his body. When he has a day where he doesn’t use the speed force he still eats more than usual because his body is always on automatic alert to tap into it even for the smallest things. Most people looking at him wouldn’t be able to tell that his body is a constant state of !!!!!, which is a very non-scientific way to say it’s constantly part of the speed force it’s self. 

Side effects of this mean he sometimes “shocks” people on accident if he isn’t careful, has to constantly smooth his hair down and then on top of that has to get hair cuts and shave often as his body goes through hair growth cycles very quickly and thus leaves him looking shaggy as fuck. He is hardly ever cold and can keep himself warm by vibrating his molecules so fast that he generates constant friction.

Of course if someone were to attempt to slow him down by “freezing” his ever moving molecules then that in theory WOULD work until his speed force allowed him to get out of the stillness caused by the lack of heat.
