How to Develop Resilience
1. Work on developing a positive self-image, and accepting and loving the person that is “you”.
2. Develop a network of friends whom you can trust – who’ll be there to support you, and give encouragement.
3. Work on developing a positive mind set. Be grateful, optimistic, and focus on success.
4. Believe that you can change things, and make a difference. You’re not a helpless victim; you can take some control.
5. However, don’t waste your energy on things you cannot change. Walk away from toxic people and hopeless situations.
6. Take a long term view of things, and try to maintain your perspective. We all encounter obstacles and challenges in life.

A Message on Super Bowl Sunday...
Did you Know...?
The Super Bowl is is the largest trafficking event in the United States.
The Super Bowl brings an 80% increase in trafficking to the area in which it is held.
During the Super Bowl, many women and girls who are victims of trafficking are required to meet a "Quota" of how many clients they need to service per day.
The average age a teen enters the sex trade in the U.S. is 12 to 14-years-old. Many victims are runaway girls who were sexually abused as children
How can we Prevent this?
By providing girls with strong role models and teaching them the importance of building a strong self-esteem, these girls will learn the power of resilience and learn to turn their negative stories into positive achievements. Simply by being a positive figure in a young girls life we can prevent them from becoming a victim to statistics and human trafficking.
On this Super Bowl Sunday, GRL-PWR wants YOU to remind the people around you of their worth. Together we can uplift the women and children around us and let them know that their obstacles do not define them.

"The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday."

This summer we worked on a special project-a book about the power of GRL-PWR with illustrations by GRL-PWR member, Olivia !
At the end of some of our GRL-PWR sessions, we ask the girls to make awards for each other and host their very own award show. Each person is required to make their own unique award for for someone else in the group. This allows the girls to be awarded for the little things their peers noticed such as being a good friend, being the best at making someone laugh, or just plain being awesome!
Letter to Myself
One of our GRL-PWR activites is the Letter to Myself.
When the activity is done with the GRL-PWR girls, they are able to reflect on the accomplishments they made and compliment themselves as if they were writing a letter to their best friend.
When the activity is done with GRL-PWR mentors, we often ask them to pick a specific age to write to or to reflect on their childhood- how would they speak to their GRL-PWR Mentee?
Through this activity, they are able to uncover their story that they can then use to empower others. They are able to reflect on the obstacles they have overcome and they are able to recognize their resilience.
Below is a letter from our recent GRL-PWR Chat:
"Dear Self,
Beautiful was the first long word you learned to spell. With the help of your mother, you began to spell the word any chance you had. On the other hand it was a word neither of you understood. A word you never heard associated with your name. A word you let society define. Your entire life you hated yourself and you never felt good enough. A childhood gone because of lies.
Friend, I wish I would have told you that you were beautiful, amazing, and unique; that you could have had positive memories. That your identity was not in the mirror, the words of man, or the negative voices in your head. I wish you could have bypassed the years of torment, sin, and hate. I wish that you would have just walked into the identity God gave you. I wish you could have known the calling you have how significant your life is. Because I can’t go back, I want you to appreciate your story and save another child’s life.
A Beautiful Woman"

GRL-PWR Mentors and Mentees taking the GRL-PWR Pledge!
Have you taken the GRL-PWR Pledge? Every new member of GRL-PWR is required to make 31 promises to themselves and to our organization. These promises are near and dear to our heart because they were created by our very first group of girls in 2010 and have since then been signed by over 400 girls around the nation!
