He's been completely sober for a year and has already secured a few job interviews. The organization helped cover the costs of a flat, and his rent is paid six months in advance, giving him more than enough time to ease back into society. Best of all, he won't have to take those first steps alone. It's only now that I truly understand how important housing and support systems are. The reason he was even able to apply for jobs is that he had access to a shower, clean clothes, and a bed. Can you imagine? Those are all things most of us take for granted every single day. We had coffee and brunch to say goodbye for now. Before he left, he handed me an old copy of The Little Prince and said, "Every time you read it, you discover something new that wasn't there before and it's something that suddenly relates to your life. It related to mine too, even though a lot of people would say mine isn't worth living."

So yeah... we're all a lot more similar than we think.
