Don't get me wrong, i'm aware people can harbour feelings for their Friends. BUT A Symbol of Friendship is inherently a Platonic Symbol.

I have seen him say that Griffith and Guts are based on him and his friend, but I don't think I've seen the interview this "symbol of male friendships," quote is from. Feel free to link it for context.

Anyway, if we're talking about the author's own words rather than what's shown on the page, I'll see your Platonic Symbol quote and raise you a 'griffith may be gay and unable to fall in love except with guts' quote and a 'griffguts yaoi is cool, i don't know where to draw the line between a physical or not physical relationship anyway' quote

I personally do not understand why people are adamant on defining a complex relationship into just "platonic friendship" and shutting down everybody who says otherwise. To say that Miura based the GriffGuts relationship on him and his friend, therefore one should be forced to regard it as only just platonic is just like saying that he based the Hawks off his college friendgroup, therefore he must have always daydreamed about killing them or something. It's a ridiculous notion, isn't it? Examining fiction and reality with this one to one lens does not only constrict the viewpoint of how one can analyse fiction and how one engages with outside influences/references in fiction, but it is also quite offensive to harbor the belief that the author of a fantasy series cannot distinguish between his reality and his fictional characters. Inspiration can come from any place, what is written evolves from that not around that.

And talking of inspirations, does "the friendship" angle take away from all the other works he referenced for GriffGuts' writing that had very strong queer themes? We can argue about the "progressiveness" of these inspirations all day long, but it still does not take away from the fact that they are queer inspirations nonetheless.
