there's a big part of me that finds it hard to be critical of anything jess does/puts out. i consider myself someone who recognises that "famous" people are people and that we'll never know them personally, but when it comes to jess i've always had a lack of discernment. it probably comes from having watched her from the earlier days of her channel and knowing about some of the harrassment she went through during diaries.
the point of me acknowleding this, i guess, is to remind myself that nobody is perfect. with the recent issues about AI usage and white-washing (not necessarily just recent :/), my instant reaction was to say: that wasn't jess, the company as a whole is at fault, she wouldn't do that. and while the blame can't just be put on one person (or two if we're counting jesson), the founders of said company making the issues also have to be held accountable.
since we don't know enough about the AI usage, i don't really want to make any comments on that, but i do want to express my disappointment about the white-washing of characters. it's been an issue, afaik, for years, and it seems to just keep happening? in the past few months alone there have been two separate incidents (regarding the character pillows) of this -- the company will always backtrack and change the skintone to the proper one once enough people complain, but it begs the question: why are these mistakes being made in the first place? aphmau, the channel, has always been pretty inclusive compared to the rest of the minecraft youtube community, but the company keeps falling short on this, and it's really confusing??
there has been a problem with the quality control of merch in general anyway, so i suppose it shouldn't shock anyone too much
something else i want to add: it's okay to admit you don't enjoy certain creative decisions. mermaid tales s2 has felt super lackluster to me compared to any other RP they've put out (coming from someone who watched mystreet as an adult, i cared more about and enjoyed it than MT S2) (yes including a royal tale), and i spent more time raging at alternates s2 than anything else XD. i've always been hesitant to express a negative opinion about anything aphmau-related because of that attachment i've had for years, but we should all start learning together how to be critical of things while also being able to enjoy them (because only complaining about the things you consume is just as bad as not being able to say anything bad about it at all!!).
