Random Fun Facts Mantis Shrimp have a variety of different appendage shapes, from needle like spears, to more club esque smashing appendages to a shape combining the aforementioned two to a shape that is adjacent to a hatchet. Mantis shrimp are called that due to the way these appendages are folded up, looking very similar to the praying mantis. When these appendages lash out they move at a speed of 51 miles per hour from a standstill and when these blows connect the force of the 'punch' thrown which is about 1,500 newtons boils a small amount of water creating a cavitation bubble which quickly collapses in on itself creating a small explosion which stuns their prey and effectively flashbangs them, while also creating a source of heat that surpasses the surface of the sun for a brief moment allowing the mantis shrimp to break through the shells of crabs and shatter glass.
