the past few years in particular, i feel like omegaverse has reared its head as a thinly veiled conservative trope.

i really can't view the trope outside of the current political climate. so much of omegaverse is pronatal and bioessentialist in a time when reproductive care is threatened and illegal in several states. YES some authors do talk about abortion seriously in their works but we can't pretend it's the vast majority of the works put out there. how many accidental pregnancy fics end with the character delivering the child to full term? how many fics portray heat suppressants (aka birth control) as damaging? how many fics treat sex, especially for the sake of procreation, as the most important part of someone's existence? there are productive ways to take these topics and deconstruct them, but in large, i just don't think fandom at large is doing that. ignoring the implications of this trope in this current political climate just... baffles me, honestly.

people tend to defend most of these statements with the fact that the struggles of women are being placed onto male characters and it inherently makes the work feminist. I JUST DO NOT AGREE. again, art doesn't exist in a vacuum. i'm guilty of having mostly mlm ships too, but the average fandom participant knows full well that mlm ships reign supreme. omegaverse can be seen as an attempt to bring female experiences to fanfiction but at the end of the day, most of the men in omegaverse still have some degree of male privilege due to internal bias. now, if we are to take omega males as 1:1 with real-life women... what exactly are we saying about them and their struggles? that women are meant to be claimed by a single, dominant force? that women under duress will choose fertility over all else? that women can't control their desires unless under copious amounts of hormonal drugs? the implications that most omegaverse brings to the table paint women in such a horrible light.
