cordelia Is buffy’s season 1 love interest literally like so much of the pilot hinges around their relationship, cordy is a throughline through all of wtth and the harvest that tracks buffy’s sense of longing and alienation - the self she was, the one who could fit in with the popular girls, dangled before her and then snatched away by cordy’s encounters with buffy’s slayerness and eventual disgust of her . then the next episodes show buffy pursuing her selfhood through the same club as cordy. pursuing normalcy chasing the same boy as cordy. meanwhile cordelia is constantly encountering her fear of herself via buffy - being associated with freakiness in buffycoded ways in the puppet show and nightmares. and then the penultimate episode before the season wraps up is the two of them finding commonality - they share their loneliness, whcih neither of them has ever done before. cordelia says “I know you share this feeling we have for each other, deep down” and the feeling is never named but it hangs over the whole episode. it’s only after reconciling in part with the fear cordelia represents that buffy can go into the season finale and find her death - a total separation from the promise of the person she thought she could be on the first day of school by hanging out with cordy. but actually, cordelia is with her on the other side. has already started integrating more with Buffy’s friends, shares the horror of the massacre scene with willow. while buffy is busy dying and returning, cordy is helping save the world without a second thought, and when buffy is back to life and the master is destroyed, cordy is among her friends, knowing buffy’s secret, not needing to even ask any questions about it. it’s understood without words just like the unnamed feeling they share deep down. they’re wearing matching colors in this moment, critical because cordelia has also undergone a symbolic death - met with her first vampires, her first apocalypse, the world she knew is vanished. she’s on Buffy’s side of their collective transfiguration now. so ok.
