Iâve been told by a few people now that posts are getting deleted and folks are getting locked out of their accounts. Especially those posting live video and photos from the protests.
Do not do any organizing using this platform âprivate or public, it doesnât matter. Tumblr cooperates with law enforcement and will not hesitate to sell you out.
Remember when Tumblr purged dozens of black lives matter accounts claiming they were âRussian agentsâ?
They donât want people to see whatâs happening.

Virginia: Another Tree-Sit Goes Up Against the Mountain Valley Pipeline
Virginia: Another Tree-Sit Goes Up Against the Mountain Valley Pipeline
from Appalachians Against Pipelines
Early Monday morning, pipeline protesters in the Jefferson National Forest erected a new aerial blockade on Pocahontas Road near Narrows, VA. The blockade consists of a protester on a platform 30 feet in the air, suspended from a horizontal rope tied to surrounding trees.
Banners at the site read âWHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON?â and âSTILL HERE.â Pocahontas Road is aâŚ
Iâm envious of the environmentalists who were alive before climate change was widely known. The ones who became environmentalists because of, like, a glen they used to go to all the time as a child getting destroyed. Imagine being radicalized by the desecration of a favorite spot in nature and not, like, the imminent destruction of the biosphere.

Criollo is shocked at how quickly the miners are moving. âWe did a reccy two months ago and there was nothing like this there then,â he told the Guardian. âIn two months theyâve made major advances. Maybe in four years theyâd clear the entire riverbank. We donât want it to get to that. Thatâs why weâre monitoring whatâs happening.â
These newest concessions bordering Sinangoe have appeared despite recent pledges by Ecuadorâs president LenĂn Moreno that no new mining concessions would be awarded. In December 2017 he was reported to have told indigenous federation CONAIE and other indigenous leaders after 1,000s of people marched to the capital Quito that there would be âno more mining concessions in Ecuadorâ, and then in February he was reported to make similar comments during a visit to the Morona Santiago province. According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), he said that mining had âseverelyâ contaminated the countryâs rivers, that he had previously promised ânot one concession moreâ, that the government had backtracked on awarding 2,000 new concessions, that some new concessions had been awarded anyway, and that he had asked the Minister of Mines to resign.
âI had to, unfortunately, tell the Minister that my promise must be met and [therefore] he had to go home,â AFP quoted Moreno saying.
The new concessions upriver from Sinangoe - large-scale, supposedly legal, but possibly involving mercury - have come after years of small-scale, illegal miners and others invading the community, and within less than a year of the AâI Cofan initiating a series of concerted efforts to repel them. The first of these efforts has been to conduct systematic monitoring with mapping and GPS, drones, camera traps - three of which have since been stolen - and conventional film and photography.
The results of the monitoring have been startling, although not particularly surprising: dozens of miners using sluices, dredges and other equipment entering Sinangoe, along with hunters, loggers and fishermen. Some fishermen have used dynamite, while others have half-dammed one river to stun fish with a toxic plant known as barbasco. At least six shot-gun traps have been found - intended for peccary and other wild game but equally fatal if one of the AâI Cofan walked into them - and on at least four occasions metal cables have been found strung across the river.
Who are the miners? Criollo and others say some are âcolonosâ from Puerto Libre, some from elsewhere in Ecuador, others Colombians. Some people from the community itself mine too, but it is limited and only involves panning.
In addition to the monitoring, Sinangoe has formed a âguardia indigenaâ of almost 20 people and promulgated its own law, as is arguably its right under Ecuadorâs Constitution, international law and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. This happened after just three months monitoring, once the AâI Cofan realised how many people were invading⌠READ MORE
When I say miners and loggers are the same as cops and scabs, this is what Iâm referring to.
These miners are directly poisoning the local water supply, the environment and indigenuous communities on behalf of corporations. They are the foot soldiers in capitalismâs war against life on Earth.
Important things to note:
These miners are not from the local communities that they are poisoning. They are invaders in those spaces.
They are directly poisoning the local water supplies and directly destroying the environment.
They have a choice â as demonstrated by the activists who stand in opposition to these mining operations.
Miners who poison indigenous groups are no better than cops preying on vulnerable communities. Take your faux âwhite manâs burdenâ-style class consciousness and your âThey have no choice! How dare you attack the âthird worldâ proletariat! They need to poison people to feed their own familiesâ bullshit and get the fuck out of here.
If your understanding of power dynamics is so superficial that you canât see that there is a difference between a group that makes its living actively killing another group vs. a group that is trying to protect its community and the environment then you need to get a new political alignment.
These miners, and loggers who clear cut forests and murder indigenous activists are exactly the same as soldiers, cops, and scabs.Â
Is that most of it involves the author/designer/creator magically transforming destructive and exploitative technologies into value-neutral stand-ins for liberation by speaking the ritual words: âSustainable. Renewable. Punk.â
Neither magic nor technology can save us from oppression. Some technologies are inherently destructive. Sustainability is a struggle, not a brand.
To take an easy example, solar panels have become a kind of solarpunk mascot â they appear in a great deal of solarpunk art and design, yet solar panel production is toxic and often relies on the exploitation of conflict minerals (and exploitation of human beings).
A lot of discourse about solarpunk here on Tumblr (which is still probably the biggest space for it) assumes that technologies that rely on exploitation now or that are destructive under capitalism will â through an unspecified process â become âsustainableâ in the solarpunk future. But what is the process?
We need to be upfront about HOW exactly each technology will be made sustainable.
And we also need to ask if these are technologies that should be kept going. For instance, is a solar-powered car actually a good thing? Are these pristine cities in the midst of forests actually healthy places to become human?
There can be no black box that produces ethical and conflict free technology. We must show all our work. And we need to be highly critical of each and every piece of technology we salvage from the capitalist present. How do these technologies shape what it is to be human? How do they shape their users?
if youâre idea of a âsuccessfulâ economic system yields massive ecosystem destruction, loss of biodiversity, acidifying oceans full of mercury and plastic, antibiotic-resistant bacterial outbreaks from factory farm runoff, soil degradation and topsoil erosion through industrial agriculture and monoculture, mass honeybee die-offs, contamination of groundwater from fracking/chemical spills/oil spills, and unfathomable amounts of waste, please fuck off
âKawsak Sacha (The Living Forest) is a proposal for living together with the natural world that grows out of the millennial knowledge of the Indigenous Peoples who inhabit the Amazonian rainforest, and it is one that is also buttressed by recent scientific studies. Whereas the western world treats nature as an undemanding source of raw materials destined exclusively for human use, Kawsak Sacha recognizes that the forest is made up entirely of living selves and the communicative relations they have with each other. These selves, from the smallest plants to the supreme beings who protect the forest, are persons (runa) who inhabit the waterfalls, lagoons, swamps, mountains, and rivers, and who, in turn, compose the Living Forest as a whole. These persons live together in community (llakta) and carry out their lives in a manner that is similar to human beings. To summarize, in the Living Forest the economic system is an ecological web; the natural world is also a social world.â
