Spelling stormtroopers

Why is it when we hear someone not English slightly mispronounce something we think it a charming by product of their foreignness, but if we see something spelt not correctly, but charmingly, in the way that person thought it should or might be spelt, one gets the spelling stormtroopers sailing in to plant their boot into it? (Personally I think the warriors of spelling find a sort of grim amusement in showing us all what the truth of the case is, but that's another story).
