"They almost certainly will. They're actively resisting UNSC governance; I know the people that get sent in in situations like this. Used to be one of them." Pushing off the wall she was leaning on, she shrugged, glancing around for a place to sit.
"Once you're deemed an insurrectionist, you're seen as just as much of a threat as the Covies. Have to be united, you know? Old habits die hard; I don't imagine that touch has softened since the end of the war." But they'd stayed their hand for a while- Either they had, in fact, softened that stance, or Kimball was a hell of a negotiator. Or... They were waiting for something. Perhaps the fact that everybody in the galaxy knew about Chorus now put the UNSC in a more difficult position; they might just be waiting for the media buzz to die down.
"You think you're ready to actively defy the UNSC?"
"What, special forces?" York didn't know everything about the UNSC's dirty laundry, but he wasn't naive, either. He knew they sent in specialist teams to deal with dissenters and terrorists. Sometimes justified.... sometimes not so much. They were notoriously heavy-handed.
"Don't I know it. Pretty sure the only reason either side of the Insurrection played nice was because the Covenant was about as universal of an enemy as you could ask for." Funny how only something as nasty as the threat of complete genocide could get them all to work together.
York chuckled, shrugging with the shoulder that he wasn't currently using to support himself against the wall. "I already went AWOL and faked my own death. Not exactly concerned about what the military thinks of me anymore."
"In other words, there was no plan." Dork. Honestly, though, what hadn't sat with her was that he'd just been... On hold. At least, that's what it felt like. He'd been doing important work, but it wasn't anything that he felt driven to do, or that would find him any kind of happiness; he'd already admitted that. He's not done healing, and she isn't really sure how ready she is in her own healing process to take on that load.
"What's the hope, then?" At the very least, she could start to piece together where he's coming from. Still, she wasn't ready to face him; no matter how much Lina cares about him, even to this day, there's a certain level of caution there that... Perhaps was always there, but took on a different form. There's still a wall- albeit a somewhat more practical one now than it used to be.
"Well, call me an optimist, but I'm hoping we can pick up where we left off... on your own time."
Optimist York may have been, but he was also a realist. They had been away from each other for years, and both had thought the other was dead for most of that. Picking up from where they left off was probably unrealistic, to say the least.
"It's just nice to be somewhere with a familiar face, at the end of the day. I wouldn't mind staying here, especially if these people run into trouble again."
"Improvising should be a backup option, not the main plan." Carolina has such a reputation for improvising that people forget she loves a good plan. Once upon a time that was about half of her job, if not more; she has a pretty good head for tactics, believe it or not. It's just... A little underappreciated these days.
"What's your plan, now that you're here?" He still wasn't face to face with her, which she appreciated. Something about that felt a little too... Much, right now.
"But it's always good to have a backup, am I right?" Especially because, at this point, York was convinced that the universe actively did its best to dismantle any real plans they came up with. Probably not true, but it sure felt like it.
"That's the million-dollar question," he joked. "My plan was to find you again and... I dunno, start over. So I guess the actual plan is predicated on how much you'll put up with me."
That entirely depends on whether or not she finds them attractive, actually; she's even quieter than normal in those cases. No need to bring that up, though.
"We'll build up to that, yeah?" She could barely manage striking up a friendly conversation with her actual friends; what tended to happen is she'd get a little too serious a little too quickly, or she'd be a little too quiet, or maybe a little too intense... Casual and friendly tended to come across stilted or forced from her. Not that she never succeeded, but she tended to fail that particular gamble more often than succeed.
Stepping to the side, she leaned against a nearby wall, turned sideways and therefore, once again, away from York; eye contact is hard, and she's still wrapping her head around him being here.
"I'm still trying to figure out what the future holds. I used to think I had a pretty good idea of that, you know?"
"No rush, right?"
She already had a gaggle of weird friends as it was, apparently. York mirrored her, leaning against the wall a short distance away and crossing his arms.
"That's always the hard part, isn't it," he murmured. "You have everything planned out, shit hits the fan, and then what? Just play it by ear? I mean, you're good at improvising, but..."

"She was." And that was about the only think that Carolina knew about her mother that she was one hundred percent confident in the truth of. Anything else she'd heard was, regrettably, through less reliable sources; that didn't stop her from thinking her mom was basically a superhero when she was a kid, or from wanting to live up to that reputation.
That had sure worked out well.
She didn't feel the need to correct York about her athletic endeavors; dance team and track and field were either female dominated or generally a pretty even split. Still, she couldn't help be snort a bit at his last comment. Fortunately, the bit of humor- intended or not- did a little to help her, quite visibly, relax.
"Girlfriends, huh? You know, I know you mean that platonically, but can I just say, women are intimidating?" Like, from a dating perspective. She's pretty confident that's not just her, but somehow, most of the men in her life didn't really have a habit of talking to her about their experiences in the dating world, and she tended to take pop culture with a grain of salt.
York snorted in amusement.
"You don't need to tell me twice."
Between Carolina, Tex, South, and CT, York had been in regular interaction with a good number of intimidating women. Mostly platonically. Maybe that was just a military thing, though--he hadn't really noticed anything of the sort before joining up.
"But I think you can handle striking up a friendly conversation with another woman."
"I have no idea what kind of model my mom would have been, anyway." Probably nothing she didn't figure out on her own, right..? Still...
After a moment, Carolina will finally turn to face him, her own hand going up to where his had been just a moment ago. Again, just... Something to do with the nervous energy; she barely noticed she'd done that.
"My best friend in school had two dads. I'm... Starting to realize the men to women ratio in my life has been incredibly skewed one way.
"She was a soldier, right? You probably know what that's all about by now." Even if Carolina wasn't a mom.
"Heh, no kidding. Probably because you're an athlete, you know what I mean? Lots of jocks and toxic masculinity and what have you down that road."
Obviously, female athletes were a thing, he wasn't an idiot, but still.
"Maybe you just need some more girlfriends."
"I... Was just thinking." About stuff. To her credit, Carolina doesn't immediately pull away from the hand on her shoulder- she'll give him the time, if he gives her the space for it- It's just that vocalizing this kind of thing is difficult for her. It's not that she doesn't want to. Well... It might be a little bit that she doesn't want to, but...
"I'm not even sure that we should be having this conversation, I just..." Foot in mouth over here, damn it.
"I didn't really have any really prominent female role models growing up. Not, like, maliciously, or anything, just... Nobody was really around that much. Nobody that I really connected with, at least. And I've... Been thinking about that." About what kind of role model she would be, should the situation arise - or if there's one that she should be.
"I'm just... Wondering if there's anything I missed." She still didn't want to look at him; it wasn't really a line of thought she was mentally prepared to dig into. She wanted to get him talking, damn it.
Once he was sure she wouldn't go sprinting off, he gave her shoulder a little pat before dropping his hand again. No need to smother her, if he could help it.
"I get it. Not sure I'm really the best source for that sort of advice, though. My mom was good at raising me and loved dad, but I didn't have any sisters, and I didn't have any extended family on Meridian, so my list of female role models is, uh, pretty short."
As in, just the one, really. Unless his fellow soldiers counted?
"But I don't think you need to worry about any sort of 'female role model guide' or anything."
Please don't mind her as she kind of... Rotates out of that hug; she doesn't really want to look him in the eyes right now, and he's probably one of the few people she knows that turning her face down and away is particularly effective at averting gaze.
"No, I... Figured. Weird question, I know." She's just been thinking a lot lately- the the faint flush in her cheeks communicated more than enough that Carolina wasn't sure how ready she was to share that particular thought process.
One hand was curled into a fist as she pressed the flat side of it, where her thumb was, into her palm, roughly at stomach level, just to have something to do with that bit of nervous energy. It's not like it was a kind of energy she was especially used to having to channel.
"I'm sorry, I'll just... Go? Yeah. Yeah.."
"Whoa, hey, no, it's not a big deal--" You made it weird, York.
He put a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"It's fine, seriously, I'm just... curious, I guess. Why you wanted to know. You never seemed to worry about it before."
@grcundedxdreamer (cont. from)
Ah- Hm. Okay. She's not going to turn down a hug, but-
"What... Are you doing?" A mostly rhetorical question, mind- she knows what he's doing, but she doesn't particularly appreciate the sentiment behind it. Frankly, she didn't really have a lot of female role models growing up; she didn't necessarily see that as a bad thing, given her circumstances, and didn't really like the pity approach. That's why she asked somebody she trusted, thank you.
"Don't worry about it."
Just accept the hug, man. He will, however, let go of her after a moment.
"Anyway... I mean, I don't think there's anything, uh, specific to having a mom. I guess she was a pretty 'archetypical' mother figure. Loving, supportive, that sort of thing. She wasn't a stay-at-home mom or anything, though."

"So... Uh. What's it like, growing up with a mom?" Weird question, sure, but it's not like she's asking just anybody.
York furrowed his brow for a second. Oh. Right.
Instead of being helpful and actually, you know, answering her question, he just pulled her into a hug.
Careful isn't gonna win you this race, man. Just be glad she left her grappling hook in her other pants; that does reduce the number of dimensions she's easily capable of running. Not... That she can, mind, but it may be somewhat more of a challenge now, at the very least. That said, the chase is the fun part- he'd win at hide and seek, thank you- so she's very decidedly still in view, with a decent enough head start. Better catch up.
Careful is going to keep a chair from getting awkwardly stuck to his ass or something. That'd make chasing a little more difficult. To his credit, once he was up on his feet, he was quick to pursue, racing out the door and down the street to at least keep Carolina in his sights.
If York would allow it, a natural silence would fall as they sipped their coffee; she was more than content to just enjoy the warmth of it. Honestly, it was getting a little brisk outside- she hadn't been sure what Chorus' season cycle would be like, so the cold wasn't anymore unexpected than anything else, but it was nice to have something warm. Jackets were in short supply, and she certainly didn't have a lot of chill tolerance. Not that she'd be caught complaining; it'd ruin her carefully manicured image, see.
Once she was done with her own drink, she'd return the mug - and York's, too, when he was done - and sit for a moment, before standing, stretching, and tapping York on the shoulder and dashing out the door.
"Tag, you're it!"
Gotta keep a little whimsy in your life.
York was always fine with companionable silence, especially since he needed to focus on drinking his coffee without burning his poor tongue. It was nice, just relaxing for a bit and enjoying the scenery (such as it was).
So relaxing, in fact, it took a second for him to realize what Carolina did until she announced her cheeky move and ran off. Dammit, this chair was too small just jump out of--
"Alright, smartass, c'mere!" With a grin, he carefully got out of his seat to sprint after her.
Carolina felt no need to rebutt that, simply raising an eyebrow at him before sipping at her coffee. Still a little hot to chug- not that the temptation didn't briefly hit her- but it sure felt good. Hell of a lot better than instant coffee or re-used grounds. They might not have fresh coffee beans forever, but they sure were working on it.
"You look slow as shit, so I hope you're still a little faster than that. I'd like to get a little more work than a brisk walk in." She might be a little slower than she used to be, but that didn't mean she wasn't basically legally obligated to give him shit. She's pretty sure he's still a criminal, technically speaking.
"I've always looked slow as shit, so that means nothing," York pointed out. He was built like a brick shithouse, after all. "But I promise to try and give you a decent competition."
He wasn't dumb enough to promise anything more than that, though--instead, he settled for taking a sip of his own coffee.
"Mm, not bad at all..."
"Yes?" Asking her that like that's an unreasonable thing to continue to be upset about has her almost missing that their coffee is ready. She'll let the barely suppressed scoff see her out over to the counter, forcing her slightly agape jaw shut as she pushed her reaction to the audacity to the back of her mind. At least, until she returned with his drink and he followed up with hit two of that one two punch.
"Hey, let's get the record straight here- you could never keep up with me." At least, not for long. "Unless you have a few new tricks up your sleeve you haven't told me about? Or you think I'm that much slower now, in which case- ow, first of all."
Despite her upset- it's mostly exaggerated for effect, but there's a kernel of hurt in there somewhere- she passed him his drink. It's not like she wants that nasty watered down shit. Honestly, she doesn't know how he tolerates it.
"Relax, I'm just... pulling your leg."
Okay, now that that was out of his system--
"I know you can probably outrace me at a casual jog somehow, but I like to think I'm still faster than I look."
Despite being reduced to a glorified mall cop on Meridian, he at least never skipped leg day... relatively speaking. Patrolling dig sites and work camps was a lot less boring than sitting somewhere with nothing to do, and it kept him moving.

"I figured we'd go on a jog after this, if you're up for it." Because of course she 'figured' that. "But if you don't think you can keep up with a woman with one leg, I suppose I can concede to some other activity."
Naturally, Carolina has to appeal to his competitive nature- she's not the only competitive one in this relationship, thank you. He might be a lot more relaxed- or, rather, capable of relaxing- than she was, but he didn't get to be as skilled as he'd been without having some kind of drive.
"Still upset that I stole your leg, huh?"
Honestly, fair.
"I'm pretty sure, even after my, uh, 'retirement,' I can keep up with you just fine," he added. "Especially with some caffeine backing me up. It'll be nice to get some real cardio in."
"I seem to recall you begrudgingly loving the sweeter mixes." Lina would pipe up after their orders had been placed, more or less, and their barista had turned to accommodate, as she stepped aside to one of the little tables that had been set up against the front windows. Honestly, the place had a lot of potential; the infrastructure to get it to meet that potential didn't really exist at the moment, but there was a vision here.
"Not that that's an option, but it's not like there's a menu anywhere. You could have asked for anything." She'd almost been hoping he went for something outlandish so she could rib him about it later. It wouldn't take long for their drinks to be ready; it's not like there was a line. She didn't really want to sit down for exactly that reason; inertia's a hell of a beast and she's always been the type to beat it simply by refusing to stop moving.
"I would have gotten milk or cream, but I'm trying to be realistic."
That wasn't him being rude; he knew better than to assume Chorus had the infrastructure for anything beyond the basics. Milk wasn't exactly a necessity for human society to function.
"Besides, all I need is a little energy shot. I'm gonna hazard a guess and say you don't want to go sit down and take a load off just yet. That's not your style."
