A year ago today I was watching such a rocking season opener, truly bombastic, and then also giving us so much excellent character work grounding everyone in their s3 journeys. I had a full season of awe-inspiring fantasy cinema ahead of me and I knew it.

What was your favorite moment of the premiere?

I loved the moments Mat slipped into the Old Tongue, and they showed clearly that it wasn't the first time, probably often on their journey back to Tar Valon. Sowing the groundwork for later payoff that is typical of WoT (come have a cup of tea with me Jeff, no need to worry, I just need to have a chat)

Oh my fucking god there is just absolutely no way Moiraine is dead I will scream. Like I thought she was gonna die because of the ominous "hey I'm gonna die real soon" vibes she was giving off, but I don't care I'm a Moiraine lives truther now. The only thing that gives me pause is that Lan can feel the new Aes Sedai. But if Moiraine is in the weird snake place maybe that counts as a different plane of existence and she doesn't register as alive on this world anymore? But then that would have been the case when she went into it in the Stone of Tear too so idk? The logic isn't great, but I'll believe she'll pop out at the Tower of Ghenjei in like a book or two until proven otherwise.

Anyway, finally could continue reading and I'm on chapter 53 now. Thoughts so far:

Anytime Lews Therin pops in I perk up like a meercat. It's just so intriguing and I can't wait to see how this develops. Like is Lews Therin fully gonna take over Rand at some point?

I've started to unironically like Asmodean. For an infamous super evil dude he just seems like an alright guy all things considered. Hoping he has genuinely changed sides, expecting to get fucked over though.

Mat stumbling his way into becoming a legendary battle leader. Bless him. Sucks what happened with Melindra though, I liked her.

I'm showpilled, but Aviendha and Rand are actually very cute together. I don't hate it even if I always wish for more lesbianism. Also I was so convinced that boy was gonna die a virgin so good for him.

Speaking of lesbians, Elayne and her super cool super hot female warder, I see you girl.

Thoroughly enjoyed the whole circus bit. I hear it's unpopular in the fandom (?), but I thought it was hilarious.

Hate how Siuan and Leane are treated now. I'm so convinced they'll get their powers back eventually and I hope it's soon, but probably not. Also if Moiraine can't become Siuan's Amyrlin In Exile now, I wonder how that plan is gonna work out.

Oh oh oh!!! I literally just remembered the dream Egwene (?) had about Thom pulling Moiraine's blue gem out of a fire. That gotta mean he's the one that ends up getting her back!

I’m sure this isn’t a new thought, but has anyone ever considered that Lews Therin Telamon was likely a total dick?

How many of the Forsaken went to the dark side because they hated this guy’s guts? The wot wiki says:

“Due to Lews Therin's power, envy overtook many of Lews Therin's greatest generals such as Tel Janin Aellinsar, Duram Laddel Cham, Barid Bel Medar, and potentially others who remain unknown and caused them to defect to the Shadow, shifting the war in favor of the Shadow.”

Yeah nah. Seems like too extreme a reaction to just be jealousy. If it was just one person, then sure, whatever, but it’s actually three and potentially more? That's a pattern. What’s the common denominator there? Yep. It’s Lews.

This suggests to me Lews was probably an insufferable jerk and horrible to work under. I bet he was a micromanager too.

In terms of abandoning the Light to join the Shadow, I think we all need to remind ourselves that people don’t leave bad jobs. They leave bad bosses.

And consider Lanfear's obsession with Lews? That kind of crazy-ex behaviour doesn't come from nowhere. I seriously doubt Lews was blameless in that relationship.

So if I was Rand, I’d be mortified if I suddenly found out I was the reincarnation of a total asshole who pissed people off enough they quit the Light and went to the Shadow. He should probably go apologise to the Forsaken on Lews’ behalf.

Of course I haven't done an extensive search of the literature to support this theory.

I dont know if it was a significant factor in any forsaken other than his direct rivals joining the shadow but I definitely got the sense that Lews had a massive ego and was kind of a dick. Maybe that was why he couldn't be convinced to go evil. The dark one promised power and influence and Lews was all "Nah, I'm already perfect 💅"

Yeah. It's kind of an interesting parallel to the Age of Legends as a whole, actually: "Once upon a time there was this perfect society without conflict or poverty, where everyone lived happily ever after; but then they discovered the Dark One, and a huge percentage of the population eagerly grabbed at the chance to burn it all down."

(In addition to the Forsaken, there's also whatshername – Latra Posae – who rallied all the female Aes Sedai against participating in Lews Therin's boresealing plan. She wasn't a Darkfriend, and we don't know how she felt about him as a person, but I'd still count her as a strike against him: If your colleagues' disagreement with your risk assessment convinces half your workforce to swear a holy oath never to give you the resources you need, you are a bad project manager.)

- Roz being gone in episode 2 would have been WILD but on par with making it abrupt and jarring as it SHOULD BE. I am quietly biting my endgame thoughts that have already been said

- Dumai’s Wells would have been the tv battle to end all battles truly

- I would have been so happy to see Asmodean not because I like the character but because I was so tired of everyone freaking out that he was cut
