UNIPLICATE

Overall, like I predicted, I found 4D to be the most difficult project out of all of them. I had a rather hard time conceptualizing and deciding what would work best for Uniplicate because its such a straightforward word that cooperated with the analog projects much better due to actual folding. I know that if I have developed the concept some more the motion design could have been longer, but in the end I found creating the 3D perspective in after effects served it with some dynamic aspect. 

The book itself was formed in after effects and was all compiled together on there. A few things didn’t go as planned like adding an extra sequence or finding more research to improve the concept due to the transition from the virus.

To visualize Uniplicate in a 4D format, I found motion graphics to be the best way to display the straightforward definition.  With simple but contrasting motions it would be able to capture Uniplicate’s meaning

I left the pages still in yellow color here to show what it would look realistically in person in contrast to the final photo previously posted. 

The final product was created using papers to relate to Uniplicate’s definition and history. As a word that was first recorded by Abraham Rees during the age of enlightenment it was compiled together with many terms he discovered into a encyclopedia for biology specimens. The Serif typeface was the main face used back then in relation to recording with analogue and printing on paper. Paper was also my chosen substrate because it could express the folds with ridges that could form Uniplicate’s connection to molluscs and its definition. The mollusc exteriors shown previously in my research display repetitive ridges which was what I wanted to demonstrate with these folds and their fabricated forms to resemble them.

When I first started I created the template needed for the main component/Uniplicate. Since I was going to use a 610 page book, I had to calculate how many lines I maybe needed to put into each letter for the template. However, as I almost finished I realizedIi miscalculated how many pages needed to be folded for one letter so I ran out of pages before I could finish the whole word. So my only solution was to use another book to complete the last letter. Sadly the only other book I could use had white pages.  When It was complete I figured that the pages were too heavy to make the main component along with the rest into a mobile. So I would have to make them display pieces laying instead.

SKETCH PROCESS/VISUALIZATION  Through browsing my inspiration boards on Pinterest I began to sketch out what the final 3D product may look like. I thought of making 360 mobile with the main component (the pages with Uniplicate folded in it) and additional pieces (pages folded to look like mollusc/fossils or round organic).  

Uniplicate’s 3D form is inspired by these paper folding techniques that require a series of folds. The paper, ridges and substrate can correlate to Uniplicate through its definition and history.  The ridges and form out of this technique can allude to the exterior visual of molluscs and fossils from which Uniplicate defines one fold to.

During Abraham Rees’s time (1743 – 9 June 1825), was also the Age of enlightenment  (1685-1815). He was a part of the culmination of widespread knowledge of sciences and biology with his encyclopedia. Uniplicate’s history is deeply rooted into physical knowledge that came from encyclopedias and pages.

RATIONALE  The final ended up being a book that layered the Rorscharch painting techniques on acetate. I found the technique to be the best way to represent Uniplicate because of the intricate designs that could be made with one fold. The designs from the one fold on acetate created very organic shapes and textures from the acrylic gouache used. Each paint blot looked alive being standalone on its transparent format.
