            When Myka called, Helena was already on the road to Univille. Pete had asked her to come, because Myka had had a brush with an artifact, and he thought Helena might be able to help. Helena wasn’t so certain, given what the artifact was—a wicked little bell that caused people to relive the worst moment of their lives. The odds that Helena herself lurked in Myka’s darkest memories were great. But Myka wouldn’t tell anyone else, and if Helena could help, she had to.

            “Hello, Myka?” Helena said when she answered the phone through the neat little device in her car.

            “Oh,” Myka said. “I’m sorry, I thought you’d be asleep. It’s late. Did I wake you up?”

            “Not in the slightest.”

            “Are you okay?”

            Helena smiled at the concern in Myka’s voice. She didn’t seem angry or frightened, at least not in regard to Helena. “I’m fine. Are you?”

            “Yeah, yeah, I just…” Myka paused, and the presence of her silent thought weighed the car down, pressed it into the two-lane highway Helena was now driving slightly faster on. “I was gonna leave a voicemail. It wasn’t important. You should get some sleep, okay?”

            “You, too,” Helena said, even though she didn’t think it was likely.
