Part 1 | Part 2
“Hey Y/n?” Julie asked her best friend who was about to head back to her own house since it was almost 9 pm and she promised her mom she’d be back by then.
The girl looked up at Julie with a smile. “Yeah?”
“If your mom’s okay with it, would you like to spend the night today? I don’t think I’d like to be alone after everything that’s happened.”
“Sure, I’d love to! I’ll call my mom” Y/n grabbed her phone and dialed her mothers’ number while Julie went to ask her dad. Ray already came up earlier to see what the commotion was about and the girls had to come up with a quick lie about the ‘school play’ Julie already used during dinner.
Y/n just got off the phone with her mom who said that it was alright that she’d stay over at the Molina’s when Julie came running into her room again with her thumbs up.
When the girls were settled into their pajamas (Y/n wearing one she left at Julie’s house at one point during a sleepover with her and Flynn) they sat on Julie’s bed not really saying anything, letting the comfortable silence taking them over.
They sat like that for a few more second when Y/n decided to break the ice about their situation. “Should we tell Flynn about what happened?”
“I mean we could text her?” Julie offered, grabbing her phone from her bedside table which Y/n nodded at.
“What would you say if I told you there are three ghosts living in my mom’s studio?” Julie recited what she was typing.
Y/n sighed at the words that left Julie’s mouth. “I’d say you were crazy…”
Julie looked up at Y/n and sighed while silently agreeing with her. They both knew that if they told Flynn about the ghosts they met today she was going to send them both to a therapist. After all the two girls were the only two people who seemed to be able to see them.
Y/n looked back up at Julie and they both began to crack a smile thinking the exact same thing. How did they end up in this mess?
“Can you believe the ghost of my uncle is living in your backyard shed?” Y/n asked with a laugh slipping past her lips. Julie looked at her with a smile until she couldn’t take it anymore and she bursted out laughing at the ridiculous situation. And before they knew it the two girls were laughing so much they almost couldn’t breathe.
————————————————–
“You sure you wanna do this?” Y/n asked Julie the next morning as they headed to studio in the backyard of the Molina’s. “I mean even if the,” She paused for a minute, looking behind her back to be sure Ray or Carlos weren’t around. “ghosts aren’t there. It’s still the place you’ve been avoiding for months. Are you sure you’re ready?”
Julie sighed, nodding her head. Y/n saw that as the approval she needed and opened the doors. The guys weren’t there so they luckily had some privacy. Julie went straight to her mom’s piano that still had the protection cover over it ever since Rose died. Y/n however went to the 6-string guitar next to the couch that her mother taught her to play whenever she and Rose were hanging out. She had no idea why it was still here when her mother didn’t even come here anymore but she was glad it was. She started strumming away a little on a song she was working on last night called ‘Finally Free’. She didn’t even realize she was humming some of the lyrics that still needed a load of work when a sob pulled her out of her focus. She looked up at the direction of the sound and saw Julie crying while reading what seemed to be sheet music.
“Oh, Jules.” Y/n said while she sat herself down next to her. She put a supporting arm around her friend until she calmed down.
“My mom wrote this for me” Julie said while she gave Y/n the sheet music. Y/n looked at Julie with a questioning look.
“Are you sure I’m allowed to read this?”
Julie nodded and so she began to read. By the time she reached the end of the song she was also about to cry but she refused to let the tears fall knowing how much that would upset Julie even more. So instead she laid down the sheet music and started playing the chords. Julie joined in with the lyrics and that way they started to perform the beautiful song called ‘Wake Up’. When they reached the chorus she let Julie take over the piano, Y/n now moving over to her guitar. She made up some random melody that sounded nice together with the chords of the piano. And for the first time in a long time Julie Molina managed to play the piano and sing like she always used to do. It felt like everything was alright again. The two girls were just enjoying singing and playing the song together that they didn’t realize that their three new ‘ghost friends’ we’re standing right behind them.
When the song ended Julie burst into tears. It was a mix of sadness and happiness. Touching the piano again after so long brought so many memories back into her mind that her body didn’t know how to cope with. She buried her head in the crook of Y/n her neck silently crying and sometimes she let out a breathy laugh when Y/n made a stupid joke.
Y/n thought she felt something on her shoulder but when she briefly turned her head around there was nothing there. Just when she let go of Julie when she stopped crying Flynn walked in making the two girls look up.
“Carlos told me you guys we’re gonna be out here” She said with a sad tone.
“Are you okay?” Julie asked concerned
“No! I’m not okay. You just got kicked out of music! I’ve been up all night, thinking of what I was going to say. Might’ve drank seven soda’s but I need to get this out….”
“Well Flynn don’t worry ‘cause Julie here jus-” Y/n tried to tell Flynn what just happened a few moments ago but had no way to finish her sentence when Flynn interrupted her.
“ No, it’s my turn to talk. You can’t give up music. Your music’s like a gift, that would be a tragedy. So, you’re basically, like, canceling Christmas, and I love Christmas!” Flynn rambled on. Julie then tried to interrupt her but she didn’t get the chance as she continued.
“ When we were six, we promised to be in a band together. Triple Trouble.”
“I never agreed to that name” Julie cut in, Y/n letting out an amused laugh.
“Not the point,” Flynn sighed and looked up to Julie with a desperate look.
“Jules, if you leave the music program, we’ll be apart forever. That’s just what happens.”
Y/n looked at Flynn with one of her ‘are you serious looks’. “Flynn I don’t think that’ll happen! We’re all best friends and a music program won’t change that. Besides Jules-”
She was cut off by Flynn shaking her head frantically. “No, sure we’ll see each other in the hall sometime, but we’ll have different lives, make new friends.” “That’s not true.” Julie disagreed with her other best friend. “You’re right. Y/n and I won’t be making any new friends. But you will! And the only time we’ll contact each other is when we’ll be liking each other’s posts on Instagram. Every time I’ll be hitting that little heart, my heart will be breaking because Julie left me and Y/n all by ourselves, and,” She took a deep breath after ranting about the horrible future she could see before her eyes. “Do you have any soda? My head hurts.”
Julie and Y/n shared a look then smiled back at their friend.
“Can I talk now?” Julie asked the girl before her.
“Fine.”
Julie sighed and let out a breath before looking back up at Flynn. “I just played the piano and sang again”
For a moment Flynn just looked between Julie and Y/n in disbelief. When Y/n said it was true and she and Jules played Rose’s song together Flynn almost had a nervous breakdown.
“Well why didn’t you just say so?!”
“We were trying!” Julie answered the girl with a smile.
When the two girls told Flynn the reason that Julie found the courage to play and sing again was because of her mom’s song she was very proud. The three girls headed out the studio when they realized what time it was and being late for English again wasn’t a smart plan.
Y/n seemed to be the only one who noticed the three ghost boys standing outside the studio and a smile immediately grew on her face. She waved at the boys who happily waved back, Julie now noticing them too while Flynn had no clue.
“Oh hey!” Flynn looked back at her two best friends when Julie said that. Y/n noticed her gaze so she quickly pushed Julie forward as if they were following her all along.
“Let’s hustle!”
The two girls waved to the boys one last time before finally going up the stairs (while almost falling over when they tried to play it cool).
“Don’t worry we weren’t listening!” Reggie said while waving to them. It didn’t seem to actually phase Julie what the boy said, she was too busy trying to get Flynn to walk away from the scene. Y/n however seemed to catch on and let out a gasp. “Are you kidding me?” She exclaimed with a disappointed sigh.
“About what?” Flynn asked her a little confused when she wasn’t even looking in her direction.
“Oh! Nothing just sprained my ankle a little while walking on the steps. But I’m fine. Let’s go!”
With that the three friends walked out the backyard after what felt like a century for Y/n and Julie.
—————————————-
Y/n was currently in a classroom making a biology test because she missed it last week. Meanwhile Julie and Flynn were talking to Mrs Harrison trying to get Julie back into the music program. Deep down she knew it wasn’t going to work, at least not by asking. The spot was already filled by the new kid. She knew she was supposed to be focused on her test but all she could think about was a way to prove Mrs Harrison how talented and worth it Julie was. When she finished her test and walked up to the front desk of her teacher she got the perfect idea. But she was going to need some help.
“Y/n there you are! How’d the test go?” Julie asked her when she and Flynn approached her. Based on the look on their faces Julie wasn’t let back in the music program.
“It went alright, but I guess it didn’t go as well for you guys?”
Both of them shook their head.
“Well,” Y/n continued, “I got an idea but I need you both to cover for me for our next classes. I won’t be going.”
They looked at her as if she was crazy. Skipping class wasn’t something Y/n would do, definitely not unannounced but they agreed none the less.
“Okay thank you! I’ll see you later!” Y/n said and then quickly left the school building.
——————————-
“Guys, are you here?” Y/n asked, entering the studio but she was not prepared to see a shirtless Luke standing in the middle of the room.
“Y/N! Hi!” Alex greeted his niece who seemed to be distracted at the sight before her eyes but his voice got her attention back to reality. Luke quickly put on his shirt, his cheeks tinting red at the encounter.
“Hey Y/n!” Luke gave her an awkward wave with a small smile which made her smile too. At the sight of her smiling his worries of making it awkward were long gone.
She looked around wondering where the third member of the group was and as if on cue Reggie teleported right next to her, a big smile on his face. “Hey Y/n! What brings you here?”
“Yeah I thought you and Julie had school right now?” Luke asked the girl, a hint of amusement in his voice when he saw the state of the girl before him. When he said that she got all flustered, knowing she just got busted while skipping school.
“Okay so I know what it looks like and you’re not wrong but I need your help.” Y/n said to the three boys.
“Yeah sure, anything.” Alex said knowing the boys were either going to agree with him or he’d drag them into it. He just really wanted to help his family out.
“Julie didn’t get back into the music program. We tried asking our teacher but she said it was too late. I was in class when I got an idea and I need your help to do it.” She walked over to the couch, the boys following her. Luke and Reggie said on either side of them while Alex grabbed a chair in front of them. She opened her backpack to get out her songbook and grabbed the loose paper out of it. “I wrote this a few days ago when I had some inspiration but I didn’t have time to exactly finish it. I was hoping if one of you could help me finish the song. That way Julie can perform it at the spirit rally tomorrow and Mrs Harrison will have to let her back in. So which one of you guys is the songwriter?”
At the words of the girl Luke got one of the biggest grins Y/n had seen. “I guess that would be me,” He said and Y/n gave him the paper. “By the way, that’s a great idea with the whole performing thing.” He gave her a genuine smile which she returned. Luke opened the folded piece of paper and let his eyes scan across the lyrics, reading them out loud for Alex and Reggie to hear too.
Sometimes I think I’m falling down I wanna cry, I’m calling out For one more try to feel alive And when I feel lost and alone I know that I can make it home Fight through the dark and find the spark
Luke grinned knowing exactly what to do with it.
“I know it isn’t much but I hoped we could finish it together.” Y/n said to Luke. She really hoped he wouldn’t hate the piece or this was going to be very embarrassing. For some reason she searched for Luke’s validation now that she knew he wrote the songs for Sunset Curve. He was experienced in writing so if he didn’t end up liking it what then?
Her doubts were quickly gone when Luke excitedly grabbed his own song book. “Y/n this is great! It fits perfectly with this song I worked on before…” He trailed off thinking back to dying and how much it changed their lives. “we died. It’s called Bright. I think if we added this to the beginning and added this killer melody it’s gonna be awesome!” He continued going back to his enthusiastic self.
Y/n looked up at the boy smiling like an idiot. “I think that’s perfect! Thank you so much.”
Luke looked her in the eyes with a permanent smile edged on his face ever since she walked in. Talking to her about music felt so great, no one, not even his band-mates were as passionate about songwriting as he was and now Y/n seemed to share that passion with him it made his heart warm.
“Yeah of course, anytime.”
