I’ve been working on a short film (see evidence above) which has taken up basically all of my time since July 2017. It’s finally finished and will be released later this year! :D
hi! just wanted to ask, whats it like studying at goldsmiths? what were ur favourite parts and least favourite parts? what are the people and what is the uni like? i just got an offer and im going to make it my firm, just wanted to know some more info! sorry for being annoying 😊
Hi! You’re not being annoying at all! I’m happy to help. :)Congratulations on your offer! I really liked studying at Goldsmiths and I feel it’s been invaluable to developing my current artistic practice. It’s one of the few Fine Art courses in the UK that really allows you to grow independently (without setting you limiting assignments and briefs) and I think that’s vital if you’re looking to maintain a studio based practice after graduation. This is certainly my favourite part of the course. You’re given a studio space and are free to create whatever, whenever - and, in my experience, the tutors are always able to provide thoughtful insight into what you’re making an why. In the first two years, the emphasis isn’t so much on whether what you’re making is good or bad (which can be confusing, haha), but on what you’re motivation is, what you’re interested in and why. It’s a great way to get to know yourself better. I think understanding what you like, what you don’t like and trying to figure out why is such an important part of the process. However, it is difficult and I certainly know some people who never really got there. There are times that some tutor’s comments can come off as mean or unfair, but often it’s just that these things are hard for us to hear. These were the comments that I found most useful. I think they help you unpack your own bullshit, haha. I think everyone I know who received such a comment (including me) came to realise and accept the truth in them, and know that they weren’t meant as a personal attack. I hope that makes sense and that I’m not painting Goldsmiths as a scary place were people tear you down, haha. It’s really not like that! My personal tutors were all so supportive and I made amazing friends. :D There’s so many different types of people there. I was worried that everyone would be these cool ‘art school’ types but I quickly found people I really connected with. My least favourite part was definitely the convenors, which are basically big group crits. There are about 30 students in them and they’re just too big to function. You only have 3 per term though, and you only have to present work at one of those so it’s really not that bad. Personally, I never found any of them useful, but the personal one-to-one tutorials and the small group tutorials (usually 5-8 students) definitely made up for it. I should also point out here that this is my experience of the single honours BA Fine Art course. If you applied for the joint honours BA Fine Art and Art History things work a little differently and the convenors are smaller.Just a few extra notes: Goldsmiths probably have some of the best studio spaces in London and the critical studies seminars were also super useful! Goldsmiths actually wasn’t my first choice, but I’m so glad I ended up there. I think I had a lot of misconceptions about what it was like there (such as them not liking painting, which is just not true!) but it turned out to be the best place for me to be. I hope this was helpful! :D
