Riley startles something fierce and nearly drops her tablet when the prisoner speaks. She whirls around and eyes him, but itâs clear he wasnât speaking to her. âIâm going to be honest, that was a little creepy,â she says as she distractedly tries to go back to her work. But she canât because thereâs something about him, and itâs like an itch in her brain.Â
âSo,â she says, feigning deep fascination with the motions sheâs going through at the moment, âwhat did you do? Or, sorry, what are you accused of doing?â Innocent until proven guilty, blah blah blah. Sheâs had bad experiences with that concept, so sheâs not invested in even faking it.Â
âHm,â he simply hums at the startled officer, only glancing briefly to her. âI usually rehearse in private. I had no intention of startling you.â Truth be told, once he started rehearsing he usually hated stopping because of others, but perhaps the setting was not optimal at the moment.
âThe captain believes me someone from the past,â he said, perhaps cryptically, a slight twitch of his mouth as he kept from frowning. It was frustrating. âSomething he believed strongly enough to take a man from his home and away from his daughter.â
