I'm trying to start traveling, do you have any advice?! :)
Save up a decent amount of money, go somewhere… Make friends with the locals, they’ll show you the best spots, plan it but don’t plan too much, drop expectations, find beauty in wherever you are, push yourself out of your comfort zone, meet new people and listen to their stories, sleep in beautiful places so you can wake up in beautiful places even if it takes hiking a mile or two into the wilderness, packing a pack, and ditching your car for a day or two… Pull over when you see something beautiful. Take your time.. Instead of focusing on getting to as many different places possible, thoroughly explore where you are and soak it all in.. EXPERIENCE is more meaningful than dazzling your friends at home with all the places you’ve been.. If you’re on a tighter budget, don’t eat out.. But if you can, download the yelp app and eat at the best vegan cafe in town. Shop local wherever you are. Go to farmers markets and pick up fresh produce for lunch.. Take all day. And then plan for dinner.. This is your life and your dinner. Make it delicious. Invest in a camp stove. I bought a $20 one from wal-mart at the beginning of my trip this past summer and only used about two $5 propane tanks to cook my food for 3 months. When you’re running low on $$, check craigslist for odd jobs to keep you going. Make art and sell it on the street or maybe open your own online store, you can run it from anywhere and there are post offices in every zip code in the US. Photograph your journey and the beautiful moments (don’t hyper focus on this too much) I never knew how much I would cherish the moments I captured while traveling. Keep your wits about you, it’s pretty easy to pick out the bad apples when a decent intuition but always keep a knife and mace with you. Whatever way you’re traveling, keep your shit organized. This makes life on the road 100% less stressful. Always know where your cooking ware, warm clothes, and knife is. Fall in love, but the road will teach you to let go. Fall in love more so with yourself and your journey. I swear, every day being on the road with peculiarways, we would cry of loneliness and sadness, and then cry of the overflow of pure joy in our souls almost everyday. You will be tested, and parts of you will arise that you never knew were there. But with that comes a new and inspiring strength from within :) love ya
push yourself to get up before the rest of the world - start with 7am, then 6am, then 5:30am. go to the nearest hill with a big coat and a scarf and watch the sun rise.
push yourself to fall asleep earlier - start with 11pm, then 10pm, then 9pm. wake up in the morning feeling re-energized and comfortable.
get into the habit of cooking yourself a beautiful breakfast. fry tomatoes and mushrooms in real butter and garlic, fry an egg, slice up a fresh avocado and squirt way too much lemon on it. sit and eat it and do nothing else.
stretch. start by reaching for the sky as hard as you can, then trying to touch your toes. roll your head. stretch your fingers. stretch everything.
buy a 1L water bottle. start with pushing yourself to drink the whole thing in a day, then try drinking it twice.
buy a beautiful diary and a beautiful black pen. write down everything you do, including dinner dates, appointments, assignments, coffees, what you need to do that day. no detail is too small.
strip your bed of your sheets and empty your underwear draw into the washing machine. put a massive scoop of scented fabric softener in there and wash. make your bed in full.
organise your room. fold all your clothes (and bag what you don’t want), clean your mirror, your laptop, vacuum the floor. light a beautiful candle.
have a luxurious shower with your favourite music playing. wash your hair, scrub your body, brush your teeth. lather your whole body in moisturiser, get familiar with the part between your toes, your inner thighs, the back of your neck.
push yourself to go for a walk. take your headphones, go to the beach and walk. smile at strangers walking the other way and be surprised how many smile back. bring your dog and observe the dog’s behaviour. realise you can learn from your dog.
message old friends with personal jokes. reminisce. suggest a catch up soon, even if you don’t follow through. push yourself to follow through.
think long and hard about what interests you. crime? sex? boarding school? long-forgotten romance etiquette? find a book about it and read it. there is a book about literally everything.
become the person you would ideally fall in love with. let cars merge into your lane when driving. pay double for parking tickets and leave a second one in the machine. stick your tongue out at babies. compliment people on their cute clothes. challenge yourself to not ridicule anyone for a whole day. then two. then a week. walk with a straight posture. look people in the eye. ask people about their story. talk to acquaintances so they become friends.
lie in the sunshine. daydream about the life you would lead if failure wasn’t a thing. open your eyes. take small steps to make it happen for you.
small habits to adopt
wake up early
drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up
meditate or concentrate on your breathing for at least 2 mins
visualize your goals for the day and for the future
make your bed
do calf raises or squats while brushing your teeth
floss
dry brush
take a cold shower (or end a hot shower with cold water right after for about 3 mins)
put on lotion while your skin is still damp
cleanse, tone, and moisturize your face
apply sunscreen
drink a glass of water before and after every meal
listen to a podcast/ted talk instead of music while walking or driving
park far away from where you’re going
stand up straight
look at people in the eye when talking to them
look straight ahead when walking, not at the ground
smile at strangers
stop complaining (it’s bad for your health)
bring cash instead of credit card
track your expenses
turn off notifications on your phone when doing work
resist the urge to go on your phone and observe your surroundings more
set a timer for 5 mins when scrolling through social media and stop when the time is up
learn at least 5 new vocab words from your target language every day
exercise while watching shows/videos
read at least 10 pages every day
do tasks that can be done in 2 mins right away
drink tea
prepare workout gear the night before
jot down tasks for the next day before sleeping
write down quotes/lyrics that strike a chord
spend 30 mins on a hobby
journal and write down things you are grateful for
aim for 7-8 hours of sleep
how to feel ethereal
use scented body mist to make your hair smell nice
moisturize every night before bed so your skin is really soft
laugh when you wanna laugh
cry when you wanna cry
apply gentle pink lip balm
go to bed before midnight most nights so you get the full amount of sleep
light scented candles around your room
leave the windows open
wear soft, flowey fabrics
give yourself some time to wake up in the morning before you start your day, to just take in the sounds and transition to wakefulness
do things you would normally do inside outside - even if it’s just reading a book, or having your lunch
keep a gratefulness journal - each night, just add a couple things you’re grateful for, or happy about
take bubble baths with the lights dim
eat fruits instead of candy
sing when you’re alone, and sing with friends
take a moment to look around, take in the sights and smells and the beauty of the world around you
do something nice for someone
I used to think it was important to have common interests with the person that you are in a relationship with but now I think it is more important to be similar in other aspects. like how kind you are. how you treat the people you care about, how you treat strangers. how you deal with anger. how you deal with pain. and not necessarily dealing with all these things the same way but being perseptive enough to understand what action each situation calls for. it’s important for both people to be on the same page about what that action should be. it’s important to me to have that kind of synchrony.
