I like to watch old PSAs from time to time. But, this one especially intrigues me. It’s called Can’t Buy a Brain, and it’s a Russian PSA about train safety. The fascinating part is the style of these shorts. Oh yeah, there’s more than one! (Either because they’re so popular or Russian kids need more sense.) The animation is well done, and the style kinda reminds me of Ed, Edd and Eddy. (I wonder if that was an inspiration.) It also adds style with it’s use of sound effects, as most it even all the sounds are just some guy making the sounds. It also gets credit for the characters speaking some kind of gibberish, but the animators do a great job miming out what they’re saying, so anyone of any language can make out what’s happening. I also have to say that while the animation looks dated, the selfie stick, mobile phone and other modern tech shows these are current PSAs, which makes it both fascinating and bizarre. The music is catchy too. And there’s also a bit of mystery as to who this shopkeeper is and how he’s running a business like this. But what’s most fascinating is how they scare the message into you. Any other PSA would be over the top silly or over the top scary. This is both! After two minutes of funny cartoony violence, this PSA suddenly gets gory! Some of these injuries and deaths in this PSA climax are over the top that you’ll either laugh or never ride a train! I’m highlighting the first one I saw, the one on train hopping, but there’s three more PSAs in this series that spotlight vandalism, trespassing, and sneaking onto trains without tickets. So if you can stomach this one, I recommend you YouTube search out the other three.
