There’s a charger on the far side of the room, the wire draped on the floor towards you. A mocking gesture, deliberate in the placement. You know you can’t reach it, the chain would choke you before your fingers could even attempt to get to it.

You press and hold the power button so many times it becomes a fidget, something you do constantly and it feels weird not having the phone, your phone, in your hands.

Maybe they notice your attachment to it, and take it while you’re asleep and place it next to the charger.
