Iceland and Denmark have a near zero birth rate of children with Down syndrome because it’s so common for women to get a screening and terminate their pregnancy if the baby will be born with Down syndrome. This is not considered controversial, they are simply prioritising their own and their families quality of life. There is no ethical reason that a woman should continue with the pregnancy if she doesn’t want to, and plenty of reasons why it might be more sensible to terminate it, such as the financial, mental and physical strain of caring for a special needs child.
