D&D: Arya is a lone wolf at heart. She has no time for family or romantic relationships. She will never have a partner. Sheās gonna spend the rest of her life sailing around the world because sheās a āStRoNg FeMalE cHAracterā.
Meanwhile Arya:
All she wanted was to go home⦠- AGoT, Arya V
When at last she slept, she dreamed of home. The kingsroad wound its way past Winterfell on its way to the Wall, and Yoren had promised heād leave her there with no one any wiser about who sheād been. She yearned to see her mother again, and Robb and Bran and Rickon ⦠but it was Jon Snow she thought of most. She wished somehow they could come to the Wall before Winterfell, so Jon might muss up her hair and call her ālittle sister.ā Sheād tell him, āI missed you,ā and heād say it too at the very same moment, the way they always used to say things together. She would have liked that. She would have liked that better than anything. - ACoK, Arya I
āI wish I was home,ā she said miserably. She tried so hard to be brave, to be fierce as a wolverine and all, but sometimes she felt like she was just a little girl after all. - ACoK, Arya III
āI canāt. I have to go home. To Winterfell.ā - ACoK, Arya IX
She would make much better time on her own, Arya knew, but she could not leave [Gendry and Hot Pie]. They were her pack, her friends⦠- ASoS, Arya I
Maybe I should go to the Wall instead of Riverrun. Jon wouldnāt care who I killed or whether I brushed my hair ⦠āJon looks like me, even though heās bastard-born. He used to muss my hair and call me ālittle sister.āā Arya missed Jon most of all. Just saying his name made her sad. - ASoS, Arya VIII
Winterfell, she might have said. I smell snow and smoke and pine needles. I smell the stables. I smell Hodor laughing, and Jon and Robb battling in the yard, and Sansa singing about some stupid lady fair. I smell the crypts where the stone kings sit, I smell hot bread baking, I smell the godswood. I smell my wolf, I smell her fur, almost as if she were still beside me. Ā - AFFC, Arya II
They had killed her pack, Ser Ilyn and Ser Meryn and the queen, and when she tried to make a new one all of them ran off, Hot Pie and Gendry and Yoren and Lommy Greenhands, even Harwin, who had been her fatherās man. She shoved through the doors, out into the night. - AFFC, Arya II
āNo one,ā she would answer, she who had been Arya of House Stark, Arya Underfoot, Arya Horseface. She had been Arry and Weasel too, and Squab and Salty, Nan the cupbearer, a grey mouse, a sheep, the ghost of Harrenhal ⦠but not for true, not in her heart of hearts. In there she was Arya of Winterfell, the daughter of Lord Eddard Stark and Lady Catelyn, who had once had brothers named Robb and Bran and Rickon, a sister named Sansa, a direwolf called Nymeria, a half brother named Jon Snow. In there she was someone ⦠but that was not the answer that he wanted. - AFFC, Arya II
āYou play at being a servant, but in your heart you are a lordās daughter. You have taken other names, but you wore them as lightly as you might wear a gown. Under them was always Arya.ā - AFFC, Arya II
Also, as much as I dislike this aspect of the original ASOIAF outlineā¦.GRRM originally wanted Arya to marry Jon. So I think itās safe to say sheās not anti-romance. Iām really sick of male writers thinking a female character ceases to be strong if she has a love interest. You shouldnāt have to be alone forever. Thereās nothing weak about loving other people.
GRRM hated the Ramsay/Sansa plotline
GEORGE R. R. MARTIN: Jeyne Poole was included in the pilotāsheās shown giggling next to Sansaābut sheās never seen or referred to again. I actually wrote Jeyne into āThe Pointy End,ā my first script, when Arya killed the stableboy. I had some stuff with Jeyne running to Sansa being all hysterical and dialogue in the council chamber with Littlefinger saying, āGive her to me, Iāll make sure she doesnāt cause any trouble.ā That was dropped.
GEORGE R. R. MARTIN: I was trying to set up Jeyne for her future role as the false Arya. The real Arya has escaped and is presumed dead. But this girl has been in Littlefingerās control for years, and heās been training her. She knows Winterfell, has the proper northern accent, and can pose as Arya. Who the hell knows what a little girl you met two years ago looks like? When youāre a lord visiting Winterfell, are you going to pay attention to the little kids running around? So she can pull off the impersonation. Not having Jeyne, they used Sansa for that. Is that better or worse? You can make your decision there. Oddly, I never got pushback for that in the book because nobody cared about Jeyne Poole that much. They care about Sansa.
GEORGE R. R. MARTIN: My Littlefinger would have never turned Sansa over to Ramsay. Never. Heās obsessed with her. Half the time he thinks sheās the daughter he never hadāthat he wishes he had, if heād married Catelyn. And half the time he thinks she is Catelyn, and he wants her for himself. Heās not going to give her to somebody who would do bad things to her. Thatās going to be very different in the books.
All this plus his even more blunt reaction at a fan convention back in 2014:
In a convention panel this year, George said on the record that he had no idea what they were doing with Sansa or where theyāre taking her storyline, which now makes sense perhaps. He was not pleased when he was talking about it, so who knows whatās going to happen with her! Knowing GRRM, that could mean theyāre going off the canon reservation, and/or that theyāre going to be making a lot of shit up.
š
D&D v GRRM.
Bin the show. We neeed the books.
I know based on every single narrative or foreshadow about Sansa in the books that D/D ending is not the ending George RR Martin plans for Sansa.
First of all her storyline is pretty birding and stale that is why D/D decided to give her Jeyne (Arya 2.0) lady of winterfellās storyline otherwise they would have killed off her character for lack of continuation plot. All of Sansaās birding plot in the vale they didnāt include in the show so the only way Sansa was Queen was because she was married to the ex warden of the North. But in the books all that belongs to Arya and Arya will be heading back to westeros soon. Jon died for Arya in the books they couldnāt make that in the show because that would go against Jonās thinking of Sansa. He never cared much of Sansa. But Arya was his world. And he continue to think constantly of her throughout the years after they parted. Even saw Arya in Ygritte. He never mention Sansa not even when the hair was the same color. When he mention Ygritte hair he compared to Aryaās unkept hair ābird nestā, skinny as Arya under all that fur, stubborn as Arya. Everything reminds jon of Arya.
So D/D did all the Sansa fans a favorite because Iām 100% sure George Wonāt give her the same ending.
You are Arya of Winterfell, daughter of the North. You told me you could be strong. You have the wolf blood in you.
Cercei ° Sansa ° Dany ° Arya ° Jeyne ° Tyrion ° Jon
'Cause I can make it on my own, oh
And I don't need you, I found a strength I've never known
I'll bring thunder, I'll bring rain, oh
When I'm finishedā¦

little jonryas I did today
Stark Sibling reunions.
So there was some discussion on this in another forum and I thought I would jot down some of my long rambling speculations on which siblings will meet up and reunite first in the next book.
Brilliant.
Weese used Arya to run messages, draw water, and fetch food, and sometimes to serve at table in the Barracks Hall above the armory, where the men-at-arms took their meals. But most of her work was cleaning. The ground floor of the Wailing Tower was given over to storerooms and granaries, and two floors above housed part of the garrison, but the upper stories had not been occupied for eighty years. Now Lord Tywin had commanded that they be made fit for habitation again. There were floors to be scrubbed, grime to be washed off windows, broken chairs and rotted beds to be carried off. The topmost story was infested with nests of the huge black bats that House Whent had used for its sigil, and there were rats in the cellars as well . . . and ghosts, some said, the spirits of Harren the Black and his sons.
She was thinking about the coin as she crossed the Flowstone Yard, struggling with the weight of the water in her pail. "Nan," a voice called out. "Put down that pail and come help me."
Elmar Frey was no older than she was, and short for his age besides. He had been rolling a barrel of sand across the uneven stone, and was red-faced from exertion. Arya went to help him. Together they pushed the barrel all the way to the wall and back again, then stood it upright. She could hear the sand shifting around inside as Elmar pried open the lid and pulled out a chainmail hauberk. "Do you think it's clean enough?" As Roose Bolton's squire, it was his task to keep his mail shiny bright.
"You need to shake out the sand. There's still spots of rust. See?" She pointed. "You'd best do it again."
She spent the next few hours tending to the lord's chambers. She swept out the old rushes and scattered fresh sweet-smelling ones, laid a fresh fire in the hearth, changed the linens and fluffed the featherbed, emptied the chamber pots down the privy shaft and scrubbed them out, carried an armload of soiled clothing to the washerwomen, and brought up a bowl of crisp autumn pears from the kitchen. When she was done with the bedchamber, she went down half a flight of stairs to do the same in the great solar, a spare drafty room as large as the halls of many a smaller castle. The candles were down to stubs, so Arya changed them out. Under the windows was a huge oaken table where the lord wrote his letters. She stacked the books, changed the candles, put the quills and inks and sealing wax in order.
She spent the rest of that day scrubbing steps inside the Wailing Tower. By evenfall her hands were raw and bleeding and her arms so sore they trembled when she lugged the pail back to the cellar. Too tired even for food, Arya begged Weese's pardons and crawled into her straw to sleep. "Weese," she yawned. "Dunsen, Chiswyck, Polliver, Raff the Sweetling. The Tickler and the Hound. Ser Gregor, Ser Amory, Ser Ilyn, Ser Meryn, King Joffrey, Queen Cersei." She thought she might add three more names to her prayer, but she was too tired to decide tonight.

What is the reason for arya's popularity? I don't get. In the books she prioritised killing a perfect stranger over tywin. In the show she doesn't like sansa but likes tywin just cause he praised her. She is insanely problematic. Yet everyone Stan her. She is the fandom darling.
me @ this question:
largely because you pulled something random from the books and something random from the show and then called her ~insanely problematic~. pick one battlefield: the books or the show. iāll not address the show because the show is bullshit and iām amazed you havenāt realized that yet.
To answer your general question: why do people like Arya? Well, sheās compassionate, she loves people for who they are, she stands up for those weaker than her, sheās resilient, sheās intelligent, sheās emotional, she cares, sheās willful, sheās brave (so, so brave), and is stronger than anyone gives her credit for. I could go on and on and go into the details, but youāre clearly not interested in that. But I do want to address one thingā¦
In the books she prioritised killing a perfect stranger over tywin.
Who was that perfect stranger? Oh yes, he was Weese, who physically abused Arya during her time at Harrenhal, hitting her over nothing, and a man who she described as beingĀ ānearly as scary as Gregor Cleganeā and who she lived in fear of. A perfect stranger? No. She knew who he was. She knew he was beating her and her friends. So she had him killed.
Alright, what about before Weese? Weād be talking about Chiswyck, a man who tortured smallfolk and bragged about gangraping a thirteen year old in front of her father and killing her brother. Who, while bragging, laughed about it and made jokes about it. Did Arya know him very well at all? No. But Arya saw a chance to make this disgusting man pay, to prevent it happening to other girls, and she took that chance. Itās not always about cutting off the head of the snake. Sometimes attacking the body is just as necessary.
In any case, Arya regretted her decision to have Weese and Chiswyck killed very soon after she whispered his name to Jaqen:
A shiver crept up Aryaās spine as she watched them pass under the great iron portcullis of Harrenhal. Suddenly she knew that she had made a terrible mistake. Iām so stupid, she thought. Weese did not matter, no more than Chiswyck had. These were the men who mattered, the ones she ought to have killed. Last night she could have whispered any of them dead, if only she hadnāt been so mad at Weese for hitting her and lying about the capon.Ā
Lord Tywin, why didnāt I say Lord Tywin? Perhaps it was not too late to change her mind. Weese was not killed yet. If she could find Jaqen, tell himā¦
But emotion is what drives Arya. She is willful, she gets angry quickly, and she acts fast. That sometimes works in her favor, and sometimes saves her. But Arya saw these smaller villains, experienced their abuse firsthand, learned of their other abuses, and made the quick decision to see them killed. Sure, she could have had Tywin killed then and there, but wasnāt his fate. But I wouldnāt say that Weese and Chiswyck didnāt deserve what they got, I recognize that Tywinās story would never have ended so early, and Iām glad for Aryaās anger and compassion. Those are two of the many characteristics that make her so likeable.
Jon had never met anyone so stubborn, except maybe for his little sister Arya. Is she still my sister? he wondered. Was she ever? Ygritte arousing thoughts of Arya Stark from Jon Snow
