Sand, salt, sea, and sky . One of my favourite things about the shore is the way it shares a story of succession, in the ecological sense. . At the water’s edge the earth seems barren, save for those creatures who crawl around making safe space for themselves below ground. . Just inland of the high water mark, in undisturbed tracks and patches, the first signs of plant life are established. If rocks are more common than loose soil substrate (like sand) then lichens (algae & fungus in the same organism) are more likely to come first. . Looking further inland, next we find grasses, shrubs, and other low vegetation. Then the trees, then forests made of softwoods, aging into forests with more hardwoods, all the way inland (if it’s a wild space) to large old growth forest. . The shore will sing you the song of the forest and how it came to be. Did you know? . Remember, once there was no cool surface to walk on. . ✨ Guiding light ✨ . Glennon Doyle ( @glennondoyle ) said yesterday in her Instastory in response to a question about anger (how she deals with it, to which she answered she realized there wasn’t anything wrong with her when she was angry, there is simply someTHING wrong that needs addressing) that currently she has respect for 2 types of women, those who are angry and those who are actively in a coma. . It is misguided to attempt a life absent of any of the very human emotions. . Those feelings are there to guide you, they are direct responses to your environment and they carry a wealth of information. . And living in the contemporary electric world it is easy to find oneself overwhelmed, turning into darkness or destruction to handle the accumulating discomfort. . There are other ways. . One of my most helpful personal practices (in addition to being like Glennon and accepting my anger and myself for feeling angry when it happens) is to reach for my guiding light, or what Lynn McTaggart (@lynne.mctaggart) calls a “homing thought” in her book The Power Of 8, which is a thought, feeling, image, or other imagining related to your deepest sense of purpose. . This always grounds me down, fills me up, and leaves me feeling the space between myself and the rest of the material world, making it easier to breath and relax afterwards. . Not sure what your purpose is? Imagining the world you want to see, where do you see yourself in it? What are you doing? . There’s no express pass to the station of your passion when you are on a mission to discover it, but... generally it’s what comes easily to you, what you may assume is already easy for others (but probably isn’t), serves people beyond yourself, and it may leave you physically exhausted at the end of the day but absolutely fills your heart up at the same time. . This thought (or feeling, etc), the guiding light or homing thought, is the Salve of our Times, and the only armour we need, because there is plenty of reasons to feel overwhelmed by the world. Anyone who promises you a life full of only love and light is trying to sell you bullshit. . Yes, there is only love, but while we are physical, sometimes it stinks!

Before we see mushrooms, the fruiting body of the fungus, there are deep layers of fine threads called mycelia, the vegetative portion of fungal organisms, that grow and spread devouring foxes nitrogen in its path. . These mycelia can connect up to hundreds of kilometres on land below the surface and information (DNA and probably electrical) along with nutrients and other molecules are directed and transported down the open tubes of the mycelia. . In a way, they sing the story of the forest to all those who connect with the soil. . Serving up softness this eclipse season💜😆✨ . There was a time I would’ve professed my disdain for flowers. In all honesty it wasn’t really that long ago. I didn’t appreciate their flashiness and boldness and I certainly resented their softness. How could anything so soft be useful for or even fit into my life? Ah, plant teachers, I had so far to go. . You see, I grew up like many of us, denying myself the opportunity for pleasure and I was very self congratulatory about it - I didn’t have time for soft, I was all sharp edges and sea days. Always ready to disconnect with everyone to spend another 3-6-12 months at sea. . And then the softness started to creep in. I found someone I could connect to. I witnessed their softness toward me, and mine with them. I softened toward myself, and then the light came in and I blew open. . Now it’s all I want, to rise up with my flowers, softly existing and boldly stating our truth, lending our candour to make way for honey. . It’s a sweet life, if you feed it. . You may be the most spiritual you have ever felt and you will still experience the full range of human emotions, perhaps even with greater intensity. . When we feel anger rise up, it is helpful to greet it with curiosity: where do you come from? Then, to best influence the transmutation of that anger, take ACTION. . How can I turn this into something that: helps? Inspires? Challenges injustice? Creates new ways? Brings more peace and joy to myself and others? And if none of this things move, shift, adapt then the task at hand is simply to feel, with presence and attention, the complete sensation of the emotion. Feel without feeding, release without shame. This is my favourite picture of my Mom and I. . I had already spent 90 minutes or so underwater that day and was walking around my school’s nearest “city” campus site promoting the dive school I was currently attending, wearing this dive hat. “Dry diving” sans bailout (air tank) . Mom surprised me by showing up to the school’s open house, she surprised me again when she said “sure” when I offered to put the dive hat I was walking around in (Kirby Morgan 37) on her . Just after this photo was taken she confessed to me for the first time that she was claustrophobic! . MOM!!! . I had never moved a helmet with so much ease and precision and SPEED in all my life! . She did this supportive and pretty courageous gesture while having every kind of cancer (it seemed like) and being a runner and aerobics instructor and and and and, . and my Mom. . Last August my Mom’s battle with cancer ended and she left this world for the everywhere . She’s still always teaching me and her message this weekend has been clear and is for me to take very good care of myself. . That means signing off, creating space for and honouring my grieving practice, and taking the time to nourish myself and go within. . Love your Mama, the best you can . #loveyouforever
