rosalie  was  a  healer  and  member  of  the  faith  in  the  small  anglo-saxon  village  she  was  a  part  of  .  the  slow  spread  of  christianity  was  marked  with  a  fusion  of  germanic  and  other  pagan  belief  systems  into  christian  doctrine  .  as  sister  dolorosa  ,  rosalie  used  local  legends  and  plants  to  aid  in  ailments  and  cures  ,  relying  on  folklore  and  prayer  to  do  her  work  .  when  the  king  of  the  region  she  was  serving  in  adopted  stricter  laws  ,  punishing  paganism  with  death  ,  rosalie  was  sold  out  as  a  heretic  .  she  was  put  to  death  via  burning  . 

as  she  felt  the  flames  licking  up  her  legs  and  catching  on  her  clothes  ,  she  heard  a  voice  calling  out  to  her  .  it  promised  that  it  would  restore  her  to  life  if  she  completed  three  tasks  in  return  .  believing  this  to  be  the  voice  of  the  christian  god,  rosalie  agreed  .  but  it  was  not  the  christian  god  .  and  when  she  returned  from  the  suffocating  smoke  and  hungry  flames  ,  she  came  back  wrong  .

she  hungered  for  immoral  things  –  flesh,  carnal  and  cannibal  ;  blood  ,  ritual  and  literal  .  she  could  no  longer  stand  daylight  brighter  than  the  dusk  and  dawn  .  her  teeth  had  grown  sharper  ,  her  sense  of  smell  more  perceptive  ,  her  reflexes  faster  .  to  her  horror  and  revulsion  ,  she  found  she  could  now  shapeshift  into  serpents  of  various  sizes  ,  shapes  ,  and  colors  .  marked  by  the  devil  ,  she  must  have  been  .  she  didn't  know  what  she  had  become  ,  but  she  received  her  first  task  soon  after  awakening  :  get  revenge  on  those  who  had  harmed  her  . 

she  killed  them  all  ,  in  a  fit  of  hunger  she  had  never  felt  before  .  she  had  expected  her  hands  to  tremble  and  be  weak  ,  but  the  moment  the  first  life  extinguished  in  her  grasp  ,  she  needed  more  .  she  found  she  had  great  skill  in  the  act  .  she  took  great  joy  in  it  and  by  the  end  ,  blood  soaked  and  hungry  ,  she  yearned  for  more  . 

her  second  task  did  not  come  for  another  century  .  by  now  ,  christianity  was  spreading  like  wildfire  ,  wars  and  crusades  waged  in  its  holy  name  .  rosalie's  second  task  was  to  erect  shrines  in  this  being's  honor  –  each  one  depicting  serpents  ,  weaving  ,  confusing  symbols  of  labyrinthine  design  .  she  completed  the  task  ,  guided  by  dreams  and  her  own  memories  of  churches  and  cathedrals  ,  and  baptized  the  site  in  blood  with  the  first  sacrifice  made  in  this  deity's  name  . 

she  waited  much  longer  for  the  third  .  christianity  remained  a  strong  force  as  the  centuries  passed  ,  and  her  own  connection  to  her  deity  felt  as  if  it  began  to  fade  .  fearing  being  forgotten  ,  rosalie  turned  to  the  two  things  she  knew  how  best  to  do  –  sacrifices  and  shrines  .  she  made  murder  into  an  art  form  ,  she  devoted  her  pleasure  and  rage  to  her  deity  ,  she  built  shrines  in  the  furthest  reaches  of  the  world  and  spilled  blood  on  each  and  every  one  .

during  the  aftermath  of  the  great  war  ,  rosalie  felt  her  deity  begin  to  stir  ;  the  faintest  connection  brought  back  to  life  .  in  a  dream  ,  she  woke  upon  a  rain  soaked  beach  ,  the  water  running  down  her  bare  skin  .  she  witnessed  a  woman  rising  from  the  sea  ,  facing  away  from  her  ,  dark  curls  plastered  to  her  wet  ,  ivy  painted  skin  .  she  felt  a  warm  dripping  sensation  down  her  arm  ,  from  her  heart,  as  if  blood  were  spreading  on  the  outside  .  soft  whispered  words  confirmed  what  she  had  yearned  for  all  along  –  she  was  seen  .

when  she  awoke  ,  she  was  marked  with  a  red  line  down  her  arm  to  her  fingers  :  her  own  red  string  of  fate  .  in  the  waking  world,  she  was  also  gifted  with  an  amulet  to  help  her  hide  in  the  coming  years  ,  as  visual  documentation  grew  more  and  more  common  .  a  couple  decades  passed  ,  her  worship  newly  invigorated  in  the  return  of  her  deity  .   

when  her  third  task  –  devotional  self-love  and  adoration  –  was  completed  ,  she  was  welcomed  by  her  deity  in  a  dream  .  ariadne  -  goddess  of  labyrinths  and  serpents,  queen  of  naxos  ,  wife  of  dionysus  .  ariadne  offered  to  release  her  from  her  worship  ,  but  rosalie  could  not  bear  to  be  separated  ,  and  so  she  remained  loyal  to  her  .  when  she  awoke  ,  she  felt  a  pull  towards  her  ultimate  destination  :  the  isle  of  naxos  ,  in  greece  . 

she  now  resides  in  naxos  as  a  high  priestess  of  ariadne  ,  her  personal  maenad  ,  and  enjoying  her  newfound  life  in  bliss  .

〖  CONTEMPORARY  〗  :  rosalie  lives  on  naxos  behind  the  illusion  ,  the  portion  only  gods  and  immortals  can  see  .  she  lives  primarily  devoid  of  digital  age  technology  by  her  own  choice  ,  and  prefers  to  spend  her  days  going  on  goddess  assigned  hunts  ,  leading  small  circles  of  worship  ,  and  exploring  the  wilder  pockets  of  the  world  .

〖  HISTORICAL  〗  :  a  catch-all  verse  set  between  her  second  task  (  early  11th  century  ad  )  and  her  third  task  (  mid-20th  century  ad  )  .  rosalie  can  be  found  throughout  the  world  ,  though  predominantly  in  cities  and  villages  .  she  creates  her  art  in  a  way  that  is  sustainable  only  with  larger  populations  ,  and  does  need  to  satisfy  her  sexual  urges  with  others  ,  so  cities  are  ideal  as  they  grow  and  expand  .  she  tends  to  hunt  solo  travelers  in  her  journeys  . 

〖  GOTHIC  〗  :  set  from  1760s  -  1830s  .  a  serpentine  creature  of  the  night  ,  rosalie  has  become  a  symbol  of  feminine  rage  ;  devoted  nun  turned  monster  by  betrayal  ,  an  old  wives'  tales  of  awe  for  women  and  horror  for  men  .  she  keeps  herself  occupied  in  the  villages  and  cities  nearby  estates  and  manors  ,  working  as  an  herbalist  and  healer  .  many  young  women  know  of  how  to  summon  her  for  assistance  in  being  rid  of  their  abusive  husbands  /  fathers  /  clergymen  ;  a  service  she  lovingly  obliges  ,  though  none  would  suspect  the  gentle  healer  of  the  village  to  be  the  one  responsible  for  such  gruesome  deaths  .
