â in these books life seems so simple, but in reality⊠i canât make head nor tail of it. âÂ
â listen to me. when the times comes, you gotta run and donât look back. â
â i ainât afraid of dying. â
â iâm still standing, which is an improvement on the last time you saw me. â
â i still think about you. that wasâŠthat was quite a time. â
â people donât forget. nothing gets forgiven. â
â your father would rather you did not do anything so foolish. â
â forgiveness, wellâŠitâs just an easy way of saying âi donât care no moreâ. â
â i know you like to hide behind the angry moron act, but itâs a thin enough veneer. â
â when somebody doesnât lie in this world and you donât lie to them, then together you can achieve great things and destroy great powers. â
â i remain a fool, and iâm sure i shall die a fool, but iâm trying very hard to be something like the man you deserve. â
â i am always honest, maybe not always good, but iâm always honest. â
â why you got that guilty look on your face? â
â i trust i will not make a god awful fool of myself once moreâ but somehow i imagine i shall. â
â please donât go to any trouble on my account. â
â you ainât gonna die. not yet. â
â feels like things have changedâŠthe whole world has changed. â
â i feel like we havenât spoken for days. â
â weâre thieves in a world that donât want us no more. â
â we canât change whatâs done. we can only move on. â
â just do one thing or the other. donât try to be two people at once. â
â weâre more ghosts than people. â
â how can romance ever be silly? itâs all we have. â
â vengeance is an idiotâs game. â
â i donât think we can go much further on the horses. â
â iâm surprised we escaped at all. â
â youâreâŠi was gonna say youâre like a son/daughter to me. â
â youâreâŠi was gonna say youâre like a son/daughter to meâŠbut youâre more than that. â
â this is a new low, even by your standards. â
â i do my utmost to avoid you. â
â i thought the whole point was that this had nothing to do with you? â
â iâm sorry to complain. itâs just so⊠â
â i need you nowâŠmore than ever. â
â face me to the west so i can watch the setting sun and remember all the fine times we had that way. â
â do you ever miss home? must be hard, being so far away. â
â you know, weâre gonna need to come up with a better story for that scar. â
â thereâs a good man within youâŠbut he is wrestling a giant. â
â you saved my life. youâre a good man. â
â thereâs only one of me. i donât intend for them to know iâm coming. â
â i thought you were trying to make me feel better. â
â be loyal to what matters. â
â you know, i donât think iâve ever seen you squeal before. â
â iâm miserable. been a tough few days. â
â i trust your judgement. always have. â
â iâm just gonnaâŠhave a little sit down andâŠfeel sorry for myself. â
â i tried. in the end. i did. â
â one day, folk will take orders from meâŠand trust me, it wonât be no laughing matter. â
â here, take a drink of this. â
â seems like there ainât much else in this world except bastards, victims of bastards and the bastards who want to put the bastards in the ground. â
â weâll get off this mountain soon enough. â
â i havenât slept in three days. â
â just thought you mightâve moved on by now. â
â thanks for coming for me. â
â you got sad eyesâŠlike youâve seen sad things. â
â you always said revenge is a luxury we canât afford. â
â you donât hire a saint to catch a sinner. â
â youâre alive! oh, youâre alive! â
â go. now. iâll hold them off. â
â are you okay? i mean you no harm. â
â iâm nobody. â
â what about you? you doubting me too? â
â itâs enough to make a man drink. or worse. â
â i knew not to trust, yet i had no choice. â
â there ainât no more time to talk. go. â
â thank you, for your strength. it means a lot to me. â
â firstly, we ainât friends. donât make no mistake on that subject. â
â iâm so bored iâd rather be shot. â
â itâll mean a lot to meâŠplease. â
â youâre gonna sleep with your chest open if you ainât careful. â
â the bond we share, itâs the most real thing to me. i would kill for it, i would happily die for it⊠â
â life is full of pain. but there is also love, and beauty. â
â my pa used to say you stare into the fire long enough you can see the whole world pass by. â
â whenever we happen to meet, youâre always helping people and smiling. â
â do as youâre goddamn told. and shoot well. â
â i guess he never outgrew his anger. kind of like you. â
â some trees flourish, others die. some cattle grow strong, others are taken by wolves. some men are born rich enough and dumb enough to enjoy their lives. ainât nothing fair. you know that. â
â youâre driven by powerful forces i scarcely understand. â
â oh you fool. you sad, deluded fool. torn in two by different ideas of who you were, and it turns out you werenât neither of them. â
â well, i think youâre as slippery as an eel in an oil slick, but still a man/woman. â
â with you watching over me, iâd walk into hell itself. â
â lack of something to feel important about is almost the greatest tragedy a man may have. â
â when i was your age, i fought. i saw death. i have killed. â
â i wish things were different. but it werenât us who changed. â
â nobodyâs taking anything from me ever again. â
â some jobs arenât for saving and some legacies are for pissing on. â
â youâre my favorite parasite⊠no, wait, ringwormâs my favorite parasite, youâre my second-favorite parasite⊠i lied. ringworm, then, rats with the plague, then you. â
â just leave it to me. i can talk a dog off a meat wagon. â
â forgive me if i slip and stab you in the face. â
â this place, ainât no such thing as civilized. itâs man so in love with greed, that he has forgotten himself and found only appetites. â
â shut upâŠyou know, youâre not very nice to me. â
â the amount of hell weâve raised, weâre owed some back. â
â i havenât done anything wrong aside of not playing the games to your rules. â
â donât let yourself get killedâŠfor pride. iâve seen it kill too many folk. â
â when you fall, thereâll be a party. â
â every day i didnât kill you, is a day i saved your life. â
â i canât kill them all silently so, when they chase me, you go the other way. â
â does this seem like a good time for sarcasm to you? â
â usually iâm worse than the wolves. â
â i donât have to be careful. i have you as a friend. â
â i wish i had acquired wisdom at less of a price. â
â theyâre chasing us hard, because we represent everything they fear. â
â you know all that mattered to me was loyalty? it was all i ever believed in. â
â never thought iâd say this butâŠitâs good to see you. â
â weâve all lived bad lives. we all sinâŠbut i know you. â
â i kill people. and maybe i shouldâve killed you. â
â ainât you a sorry sight? â
â your jobâs starting the fights, it ainât winning them. â
â some big, loud mouthed bastard tried to rob me when i was out riding so i⊠well, you know how it is. â
â there ainât no shame in looking for a better world. â
â i can hunt, carry a knife, and use a gun. â Â
â âŠis it too late for us? â
â if the purpose of life was to be likedâŠit would be very boring indeed. â
â iâve been running for as long as i can remember. â Â Â
â they turned me into a monster. â Â
â i always wondered if i was unluckyâŠbut maybe iâm just not very good. â
â donât kill yourself over pride. iâve seen it kill too many folks. â
â sorry if i seem a little desperate. i am a little desperate. â
â if anyone gets close to me, theyâre wanted too. and i canât have you wrapped up in that. â
â thereâs all kinds of nasty people who want to speak to you. â
â they wonât hear anything about you from me. â
â tell me about you, darling and armed to the teeth like that. â
â i alsoâŠfound out some unsettling news about you. â
â i donât know how to say itâŠthank you. â
â youâŠdonât like me much, do you? â
â i canât lie to you. iâm a wanted man. â
â thatâs quite a scratch you got there. â
â take a gamble that love exists, and do a loving act. â
â iâm seeing things a lot more clearly now. â
â where are you? can you hear me? â
â i think someone saw some wolves, not far away. you should watch out. â
â guess all i got now is doubt. doubts and scars. â
â it wasnât me who went and shot him. â
â will you dance with me? â
â i like you. youâve got a kind face. â
â iâm not a good man. not usually. â
â thereâs a lot i shouldâve done and even more i shouldnât have done. â
â you are a compulsive liar. â
â next time, iâll slit your throat myself. â
â as long as we get paid or you get shot, iâm happy. â
â iâm not designed for this snow. â
â you donât get to live a bad life and have good things happen to you. â
â shut up you silly man and kiss me. â
â who made you the messiah of these poor souls youâve led so horribly astray? â
â maybe itâs a sign. try to do the good thing. â
â how many times do i gotta bury you? â
â you are the only feller who could get half of their brain eaten by wolves and end up more intelligent. â
â five thousand dollars? for me? can i turn myself in? â
â if you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is to stop digging. â Â Â
â we ainât both gonna make it. â
â i gave you all i had. i did. â
â if we have to fight, we fight. If we have to run, weâll run. if we must die, weâll die. butâŠweâll stay free. â
â people call me lazy. iâm not lazy, just donât like working. thereâs a difference. â
â i guessâŠiâm afraid. â
â oh, i didnât know i was talking to a lady. â
â i donât feel too good. â
â you have finally lost your mind. â
Small, quietly ashamed, "I'm sorry, Monsieur." She thought she'd been hiding it better â little Sylvie frowns down at her feet as she nevertheless moves closer and takes Kostya's hand, hoping they won't notice the way her fingers are turning purple. She doesn't want to be a burden, or cause concern. Mostly she just wants to disappear, to be so utterly without needs and so very helpful that no one will need to remember she's there.
But she can't. She tries to stop shivering with all her might. "I'm ââ I can be strong." She's cold, of course, but the trembling has as much to do with the silence the plants cannot help but offer her in wintertime. It's a strange aloneness. But she doesn't want to seem weak to anyone. Especially to Kostya, who is always forced to be so strong.
â  oh, sweetheart.  â  children make poor liars. very poor liars. they hold onto her hand a little tighter, not enough to bear down and cause her pain, but just enough to hope itâs some sort of comfort. he comes to a brief stop, using his free hand to unwind the scarf wrapped over his shoulders and give it to her instead; first shrouding it over her head, then securing it over her shoulders two more times before tying it in place.
â  being cold has nothing to do with being strong.  â    even experienced soldiers have become sick or worse in warmer climates, but he keeps that part to himself. sheâs no soldier. no child is.  â  nothing wrong with it, either.  â  kostyantyn adjusts the fabric, tries to not make it look so uneven. they make a note to search through their belongings once they get back to the apartment, to find a scarf they no longer use and give it to her. if they canât, theyâll ask alain. a brief look down to her hands. he makes another note to buy her gloves.  â  there. feel better?  â

â 87ïč sender shows receiver evidence of a lie they told.
investigators are fascinating to them. in fact, he loves speaking to them. itâs not every day heâs acknowledged, let alone their narratives. theyâre better than that. years of forensic knowledge and adolescent lecture made him diligent. made him perfect. he knows how to avoid prying eyes, how to stick to the shadows and sell his false innocence. itâs a slight inconvenience to be questioned, really, but he understands. itâs protocol. obligation. how can they could they blame them when they follow similar doctrine?
the story goes like this: sasaki tetsuya disappeared one month ago on a sunday. no witnesses. no reason. nothing. it took two days for anyone to notice he went missing; somebody only checked when he failed to show up to work. his apartment was in disarray when he vanishedâ the textbook sign of a struggle. only his blood was left at the scene. nobody saw them come in. but somehow, someway, this man has managed to track them down.  (  where were you the day he went missingâ?  )  â  i was away in osaka.  â  he lies, confident, even if he doesnât like the way that question was asked.  â  thought i told you that when we initially spoke.  â
one beat. two beats. itâs yagami that breaks the silence. â  thatâs interesting,  â  he says.  â  real interesting.  â  kostyantyn watches as he reaches into his pocket, watches as he pulls out a photo and brandishes it. poor resolution, two people, both standing outside an apartment building they sought to leave behind. one face he recognizes as tetsuya, lively. unbloodied. the other he recognizes asâ
yagamiâs still speaking, still muttering some underhanded, vague accusation, but they donât hear a word of it. they hear nothing. but they can see, and for a moment, the only thing that exists to him is that photo. shitty in quality, terribly dim due to the poor light illuminating that manâs tomb, but itâs unmistakable. heâs unmistakable. ( his hair. his coat. the umbrella he stole. the rain pouring like hail in that filthy alleyway. the first photo theyâve seen of themself in years. )
their first instinct isnât to defend themself. they donât deflect. they keep their breathing controlled, even as their heart thrashes in their chest, stunted, maybe even thrilled at the sight. but they do reach for the photo, and they do snatch it from his hands. kostyantyn swallows, eyes bouncing between the image and yagami.  ( an alibi compromised. the first time their defenses have been challenged. and it came from a nobody. he could laugh. he wants to. )    instead he feigns bewildered innocence. â  i donât get it, why do you have this?  â

how did they find us so fast?
if your sins were blood, you would drown in a river of your own making.
you ask what am i, but what are you?
stay out of the way. no matter how bad it looks, don't interfere, don't try to help.
when the fear takes over, use the only thing more powerful, more indestructible, to fight it: your spirit. your heart.
we have to keep going. we have to get out of the city.
if something happens to me, don't fear.
you took long enough. iâve waited hours.
if you think i need an army to destroy you, you are mistaken.
donât falter now, fool. youâll regret it.
bad luck to lie to a comrade-in-arms.
do you enjoy it? the hurt you cause? the pain? i can see it. you carry it with you. why? does it bring you happiness?
i donât mean toâi donât want to hurt people.
you destroy all those who get close to you.
you are dead, you just donât know it yet.
youâve been blacked out for hours. i thought you might not wake up.
donât you dare fade out on me again.
i canât do this without you.
stay. donât go back. i need you.
iâm going to hurt you. i hurt everyone.Â
try to stay. you were gone for so long last time, and i need you to stay.
tell me another story. tell me another memory. something good.
if you care for [name], then do not let [name] care for you.
like the poison that rages within you, you have no antidote.
willpower alone cannot change oneâs fate.
thirteen fractures is nothing.
iâm about as good with tears as i am with declarations of love.
every time i stare into your eyes, i see my nightmares.
now you seem older and harder and, perhaps most terrifyingly, wiser.
he insisted that killing you would lead to my doom.
to be honest, iâm tempted to slit your throat just to see what happens. perhaps i still will.
iâm yours to command, my lord.
i donât have allies. i have people who owe me things and people who want things and people who use me and people whom i use.
you swore to be the sword that executes my will. now is the chance to prove your loyalty.
i need him dead and i want you to be the one who kills him.Â
i want you to watch the light die in his eyes. i want him to know itâs the person he cares for most in the world who shoved a blade through his heart.
i want it to haunt you for all your days.
heâs sly enough to escape the bounty hunters quite easily, but you and i both know that he would never be able to escape you.
how do i kill the man i love?
forgive me, but how can you speak to me of obsession?
small victories have made you daring. do not let them make you stupid.
you have your orders. carry them out.
it will destroy you if youâre not careful.
would you care to hear my theory?
your injuries tell me youâve seen battle.
the problem with greedy people is that they think everyone is as greedy as they are.
weâre surrounded.
iâll catch you.
almost there. stay with me now.
iâm glad youâre alright and i know youâre risking so much to do this for me. thank you.
you kept me alive. you kept yourself alive.Â
youâre as brave as your mother. donât let anyone tell you otherwise.
i canât help the people iâve hurt. i canât change what i did to them.Â
if i do this, then perhaps iâll make up for some of the evil iâve brought into this world.
how sure are you?
as long as you want to save him, then i will help you. i made a vow. iâm not going to break it.
i swore fealty. you made me swear fealty.
i trusted you. i believed you. i did what you wanted.
do not let despair take you. hold true to your heart.
this is what it means to have faith, to believe in something greater than yourself.
the blood, it wonât come off. itâsâitâs everywhere.Â
most successful missions are just a series of badly averted disasters.
either we lost them, or theyâre being very clever about keeping themselves hidden. iâm thinking the latter.
you want to talk now? after weeks of not even looking at me?
i look at you even when i shouldnât.
i am the last person who will judge you for killing in your own defense. look at what i am. look at my life.
i left you alone because i thought you might find comfort in solitude.Â
so much death. itâs everywhere. whatâs the point then of living? will i ever escape it?
your emotions make you human. even the unpleasant ones have a purpose. donât lock them away. if you ignore them, they just get louder and angrier.
why do you do that? you close yourself up. you shut me out because you donât want me to get close. what about what i want? you wonât hurt me, [name].
i donât trust you, not about this.
do not pull rank with me.
donât take offense, but i donât know you. so youâll forgive me if i donât trust you.
how long until they kill each other, dâyou think? and who strikes first?
i wonât hurt you, but you canât let fear take you.
iâm hurt, [name]. youâre not nearly as friendly as the first time we met.
if you do betray me, i will not go down without a fight.
even your ally is helping us. more reason for you to do the same.
you didnât get to where you are by breaking promises. grant my favor. fighting it is a waste of time.
it has changed you, [name]. it does matter.
always so afraid of the darkness within. donât you see? so long as you fight the darkness, you stand in the light.
iâve been looking all over for you. stay with me! we have to get out of here.
iâll distract them and meet you there.
you were my best friend. i canât just throw that away.
donât. donât call me that. everybody calls me that. but not you..
i wouldnât expect you to understand.
i have to leave, but i donât want to hurt you. iâm so sick of hurting people.
i miss you. iâll always miss you. even when Iâm a ghost.
keep your head down and stay.
family is worth dying for, killing for. fighting for them is all that keeps us going when everything else is gone.
i know what it is to do things that you donât want to for a greater good.
you are my temple. you are my priest. you are my prayer. you are my release.
we both know Iâm not long for this world.
exhaustion makes for failed missions.
iâm the reason heâs dead.
sleep where you wish. i will not disturb you.
atop all else, are you an oathbreaker too?
keep your vow to me, and i will bring order to this empire. betray me, and watch it burn.
i hope i see you again.
forget that you did not say goodbyeâyou did not even give me a chance to object to your decision.
secrets are a snakeâs way of doing business.
the vow I made to you, it was all for nothing.
most people are nothing but glimmers in the great darkness of time. but you, [name], are no swift-burning spark. you are a torch against the nightâif you dare to let yourself burn.
you see assurances. i can offer you none.
breaking your fealty will have its cost, as will keeping it. only you can weigh those costs.
you think knowing will make it easier, but knowing makes it worse.
knowing is a curse.
stay alive. protect them. help any others you can. thatâs the only payment i expect iâll get.
what honor is there in a useless death?
howâs this for a trade: you tell me what i want, and i donât gut you.
in the cold, you donât realize how much youâre pushing yourself. youâll collapse if youâre not careful.
we wonât get anywhere if weâre dead.
youâll exhaust yourself into illness.
pain is how you know you loved her.
i wish didnât remember. i wish i didnât love her.
what point is there in being human if you donât let yourself feel anything?
youâre not afraid. why arenât you afraid?
true suffering lies in the expectation of pain as much as in the pain itself.
are we fools for finding comfort in the midst of such madness?
what is there to live for if not the moments of joy? what is there to fight for?
give me your guilt, iâll hold it for you.
why didnât you listen to me? look at you.
you always think everyone is your responsibility, but weâre not.
you are loved, you are not alone, and you deserve to know that.
you said i didnât have to do it alone.
you brood and make questionable choices that put your own life at risk, but youâre a good person.
failure doesnât define you. itâs what you do after you fail that determines whether you are a leader or a waste of perfectly good air.
what did we fight for if it was just going to end like this?
it is as if your very fate is to leave a trail of destruction.
winter is just another season to him. the cold cannot cut him down or disease him with necrosis. it cannot make him ill or feeble or weak. but it can for other people, and kostyantyn can still remember a time where he was small and powerless, vulnerable to the snow and all itâs brethren. they cannot warm her handsâ not anymore, the corpse of their god has made sure of thatâ but they are not heartless. not with children. they can give @devolusion a small courtesy.
â  oi, come here. youâre shivering.  â kostyantyn reaches for her hand, beckons her; hopes he doesnât make it any worse, even with his hands gloved.  â  do you want to borrow my scarf? i wouldnât mind.  â
â  this is a house of god, you know.  â  and what a beautiful place it is. the light bulbs overhead have dimmed in favor of the altar candles, glowing, flickering against the limestone arches and classical art. the clergy have long since finished their worship and returned to their homes, unknown to their presence.  (  or @puppetrys.  )
open and strike, a match finds a flame. the resin burns bright and slow in the thurible, smoke pooling from the sides as they place the lid back over it. tonight, they killed a politician, agreyas whispers, tired. maybe a little mournful. a father of two. both children teenaged, away with their mother on a trip outside of town. nobody will find him until morning. nothing kostyantyn cares for. nothing they want to listen to.  â  whoever you killed, i can still smell their blood on you. the bishop wonât appreciate you desecrating their holy ground.    â

'i don't want to talk about â dottore.' â ely @devolusion yknow
theyâre on the couch when he finds the courage to ask. Â
heâs sitting upright. sheâs laying down, her head nestled comfortably on his lap, allowing him to rake his fingers through her short hair for the first time in what seems like ages. the question itself has ruminated for weeks, but they havenât had the strength to prompt it until now. ( there was better things to deal with before this point. piecing her back together took time. living through the fallout and scrubbing his skin of blood took longer. ) what did he do to you? when you were there, i mean. itâs asked without much consideration, without much thought, and they regret it when she seems to freeze up. @devolusionâs body seizes, tensing beneath their grasp, and he sees it in her face just how much she hates the vague, unspoken reminder of that manâs epithet. ( kostyantyn hates himself for speaking his name. hates that they were ever trapped in a world where his name must be said. )
thereâs a tense silence there, of no fault but his own negligence. theyâve stopped moving to give her time to find her voice, give her time to think about what she wants to say. guilt bears down at the base of their throat, threatening to cut, but still, they donât try to speak. she opens her mouth. nothing comes out, not at first. but then she says she doesnât want to talk about dottore and the sound is the worst answer he couldâve received for how telling it is. kostyantyn looks away to some nameless space in the room, unresponsive. if words could kill.
â alright, â he eventually murmurs. alright. thatâs okay. they can live with that. heâll have to. his hand caresses her hair, comforting, trying to relieve in whatever way he could think of. all men must live with their failures at some point or another, anyway. â we donât have to talk about it. â
