There is some irony to be found in those who despise Lightâs character for his caricaturing of others (such as their moral systems, etcâŚ) and yet proceed to caricature his character till heâs unrecognizable.
As much as I love the anime for Death Note, I will always feel it did a disservice to the story by moving Christianity references from aesthetic, mythological, and integrated with other religious concepts (as in the manga and official art) to more literally referential and exclusive. This leads to Western viewers seeing more direct parallels with Christianityâs concepts of god, afterlife, morality, etc than what the manga portrayedâ for example, thinking that Light wanted to be that kind of god, that Heaven/Hell existed, or that the foot rub scene was meant to evoke Jesus or Judasâ betrayal. Part of this is the Western gaze that is used to seeing biblical subtext in media and perhaps the limited exposure to other religious mythology, but watching the anime, I can hardly blame people for seeing those parallels.
But itâs a mischaracterization of the Death Note manga which did not mention Christian concepts (other than Ryuk saying there is no Heaven or Hell), and did bring in other religious ideology like Zen Buddhism (the concept of Mu, the number of chapters, etc), Japanese folklore (shinigami), and the Shinto concept of god(s). Kami, the word Mikami and others use for Light/Kira, does not invoke the idea of a single omnipotent, omnipresent, unerring god of Christianity. It refers to the many gods in Shintoism which can include aspects of nature, ancestors, spirits, or concepts. Emperors or great leaders often become kami in Shintoism, which sets up the context for Lightâs declaration that he will become god of a new world. He is not proclaiming to be as the Christian god but rather as a kami which is awe-inspiring, has supernatural powers, and interacts with the human world but is hidden from it. Another important distinction is that kami are often flawed and capable of making mistakes, doing wrong, essentially acting with human-like intent. They can bless or curse humans. The goal of Shinto believers is to have a pure and sincere heart (magokoro) which kami can guide them to. All of this is such interesting and important background information for understanding the type of god Light aspired to be, protecting the âpureâ and innocent and using supernatural powers to guide the world but stay hidden from it as Kira.
Misa and Light exchanged acting tips when they lived together, I know it.

Things That Remind Me of the Death Note Characters:
Light: late night walks when you feel overwhelmed with aimlessness, the minutiae of life growing unbearable day by day, the drone of the news buzzing in your ears until itâs blotting out anything else, the sudden and abrupt realization that you donât remember what you felt before this world-weariness, this boredom, ink stains on your hands, recurring nausea and disappointment in humanity, that invisible halo burning the flesh of your back, the desire to make something beautiful and lasting, knowing youâre meant for something grander but lacking the words to define it, the ticking hum of your watch, your jailed thoughts, that ache for the unattainable, shadows following your wake, blacked out words, your myth-making of yourself.
L: the ghastly glow of a monitor illuminating the room, crumbs littering a desk, those frequent moments when youâre awake and the entirety of the world seems asleep, not-so furtive glances and whispering following your wake whenever you go outside, high-rise buildings, sleepless nights scrolling through Wikipedia pages with a hunger that is never appeased, acquaintances but no true friends, hotel rooms, mystery novels, faded jeans, question marks, those moments when you forget your own name, the whir of helicopters, droplets of rain, messy cords, dregs of tea, the intermittent sound of your hands typing out theories with your keyboard in the dark, the echoing peals of bells, how dull absoluteness feels.
Misa: your intense, severe devotion that is hardly ever returned, the wine-dark color of your lip gloss imprinted on envelopes, the bright neon stickers that you attach to every notebook you get, charms rattling against your cell phone, contact lenses, the fading memories of your happy childhood that you greedily try to keep, when you were young and believed in the love potions of fairy tales and how you never really managed to grow out of it, tarot cards, parroting the lines of the lead actress in every movie you watch and reciting them with uncanny ease, that black cat you insisted on having lounging around your bedroom because you were damned for misfortune anyway, that long and winding road you avoid when itâs dark, amor vincit omnia.
Mello: the scent of kerosene burning in your lungs, clutching your fists so tightly that the circulation almost stops, sleepless nights trying to outdo someone who seems so indomitable, the wind in your hair as some unknown artist belts out a tune, feeling untouchable and so recklessly alive as the scenery zips past by you, the image of Icarus flying too close to the sun burning behind your eyelids, chocolate shavings melting off your tongue, learning how to hurt the other children first before they hurt you, those first staggering steps when you master a new skill, the second place trophies and medals that have collected dust lining the back of your room, that heavy tightness in your throat when you have to ask for help.
Near: dossiers, crispy white sheets, a pair of dice, static screens, glue setting on bare skin, unsteady card houses, confined spaces, hand-crafted gifts, fog, spacing out when too immersed in a singular activity for far too long, the telltale sound of shuffling cards, the rustle of long sleeves, not remembering when was the last time you left for the world outside, the caress of your hair against your ears, the clink of ice scattered in glass as it dissolves in pure rushing water, snow blanketing the world as you gaze outside, white noise, optical illusions, dominoes falling in perfect tandem, condensation building on the panes of windows from the sheer cold outside, morning dew, perfect symmetry, telescopes to observe the vast sky.
Those Twitter threads where someone posts a picture of Misa, like, just chilling, and there are only two types of people in the replies:
A: "Light was gay (homosexual) af for seeing her like this and not jumping at her like so fruity (homosexual gay) [deeply derogatory] and also dumb af how did he not fuck her đ đ đ fuck her, you dumb gay. I'm becoming homophobic for this"
B, replying to A: "Umm đ are you forgetting that Light was a SOCIOPATH.....a very sociopathic PSYCHOPATH.....with no feelings and a lust for murder only.....did we watch the same show where all Light ever wanted was to kill and murder and harm.....narcissistic sociopath psychopaths can't be attracted to women OR MEN! or men. They can't be gay either"
I think itâs a profound shame that some people donât seem to realize that Death Note was originally a manga released in Japan in 2003 and judging the contents and characters by only present social ideologies fails to take into account the zeitgeist of the time then versus now (and how some of those things wonât align well). Think about how Misa was more likely to be subjected to rampant misogyny back then by those who consumed the anime versus her newfound popularity and how that gives us some insight on how even we as an audience might have had a change of values. Art is often produced in a certain context, and later generations have to be mindful of the context in which the art was produced in (not approving of, but just mindful). We canât reflect on media (or interact with it) well if we only see whatâs in front of us and whatâs familiar to us.
Dear followers, today I offer you: the truth. Tomorrow? Who knows.
we need to stop spreading the âlight is a narcissist who loved no one but himselfâ agenda cause honestly what even is that LMAO

The relationship so many ppl in this fandom have to Light can be summed up this way:
âI project the concept of a person I hate above all onto Light because I desperately want to find everything about him bad/laughable and I get mad at the story when Light is continuously written like the creator intended and not like I want him to beâ
