dragon age / carver hawke x the iron bull / teens and up / 2.1k words
notes: written for day 5 (companionship) of week 3 for @dragonagenostalgiamonth. part of my inquisitor carver verse
The Storm Coast sucks for two reasons:
the constant freezing cold skin-lashing rain and the red templars who have somehow managed to make a camp there despite the Inquisition presence.
The wind and crushing waves of the sea remind Carver of the time they crossed the Waking Sea to get to Kirkwall all those years ago during the Fifth Blight. The thought makes him slightly nauseous. He hated Kirkwall. He loved Kirkwall. He didn't like to leave, but the city would have destroyed him if he stayed.
"Boss," Bull greets him as he sits beside him on the weather-beaten and moist fallen pine trunk serving as a seat by the camp fire. Carver startles away from his thoughts and turns to look at him.
Carver isn't a small man by any means, in fact he towers over nearly everyone he meets and could probably lift a small full-grown cow with his bare hands if he wanted to, but he always feels himself so small next to the Iron Bull who is built like an entire mountain (that Carver rather desperately wants to climb again – preferably naked).
the wayhaven chronicles / nate sewell x f!detective (charlotte langford) / stardew valley AU / general / 1.2k words
notes: written for day 7 (sunset) prompt for @summerinwayhaven !
Nate chuckles softly at the way his chickens immediately scatter with an excited cackle when he throws the last of the barley grains on the ground and wipes his dusty palms to his jeans.
"Gertrude," he scolds after watching their antics for a moment. "Leave some for others as well, please."
Gertrude, the self-proclaimed queen of the coop, has the tendency to hog all the feed. She is an old (but extremely temperamental) lady and probaly doesn't have a lot of time left, but she ought to have some consideration for others nonetheless.
Gertrude, of course, ignores him entirely and Nate sighs shaking his head, something fond in the line of his mouth.
He lifts his head to look at the orange sky under the wide brim of his woven sunhat. The sun is setting behind the thick emerald green fir trees surrounding his small farm, but it's still warm enough to fare without a long-sleeved thicker shirt. Summer is so close he can already taste its sweet sap on the tip of his tongue; the grasshoppers have started singing in his flower fields and Farah tries to sell him melon seeds every time he visits the General Store. He is pretty sure that she has put it together that Nate's daily visits have another reason entirely: the new pretty face in the town called Charlie whom Nate is already utterly captivated by.
kid gloves / fenris x m!hawke / general / 574 words
( on ao3 )
When Hawke touches him for the first time after those three years apart that were all spent longing for another, Fenris trembles from bone-freezing pain.
His touch is soft like a touch of feather, a caress of silk or satin, yet Fenris grits his teeth at the flash of discomfort. Hawke, of course, notices immediately and pulls away without a word, hand dropping between them on bed.
"I am sorry," Fenris mutters. He is angry. At Danarius. At the world. At himself. Yet he knows it's no use. The past haunts him but doesn't need to define him.
"I do not mind your touch." Fenris smiles faintly, reassuring. "I enjoy it."
Hawke considers him. He looks terribly serious in this moment and Fenris rather hopes he would smile at him instead.
"It's just…" Hawke says like the kind, gentle man he is, dark brown eyes almost solemn in the candle light. He reaches over to tangle his fingers into Fenris's own, the callused pad of his index finger tracing a line of lyrium. "I don't want to hurt you."
"You don't," says Fenris. The words are immediate and harsh on the tongue. Hawke flinches, pulling his hand away the second time, and Fenris misses the touch instantly.tly.
"Hawke," Fenris says and squeezes his eyes shut. He has to force himself to say his next words. He doesn't want Hawke to look at him with pity in his eyes – anything but that. "It hurts whether you touch me or not. The pain is constant. It is always there. It never stops."
When he opens his eyes, Hawke is looking at him. There is an upset furrowed line between his thick brows and he seems to search for the right words to say.
"I am able to endure it," Fenris murmurs. It is a reminder to himself most of all.
Hawke is still for a moment. Silently, he reaches over to grip Fenris's hand again and squeezes it. Another flare of pain travels across Fenris's body and he swallows hard at the sensation.
"Do you think it will always hurt?" Hawke murmurs, pressing an adoring kiss to the back of Fenris's hand, a large thumb rubbing over his chapped knuckles.
Yes.
"Perhaps," Fenris answers and Hawke frowns even more deeply now, looking like he is debating on saying something that Fenris wouldn't like.
But then, in the end, he just kisses Fenris's hand again. It makes the corners of Fenris's mouth twitch briefly until he sobers again.
"It does not matter," Fenris says with finality. He looks at Hawke who has never stopped looking at him in return. Sometimes it feels like Hawke does little else than watch him. He is always there.
Fenris's next words have a trace of humour and desperation in them. "I have waited three achingly long years for you to touch me again. Please, do not deprieve me of it now."
And Hawke chuckles, his soft, hairy belly dipping from the sound. The expression on his face is entirely fond.
"Well," he says with the most charming grin, "if you insist, my love."
The conversation is most definitely not over and it will take Hawke many, many years to come to terms with the fact that Fenris will always have known more suffering than gentleness in his life, but for now – for at least this one brief shining moment, they don't think about anything else but touching each other again.

notes: literally just going to post this and then run away, lmao.
When Orion receives the first text message, the sandman has almost finally claimed him for the night after over 22 hours of sleeplessness.
So he is irritated as all hell by the obnoxious beep of his phone and groans loudly into his pillow as he gropes for his phone blindly on the nightstand. He lights up the screen in the dark, wincing a little at the blue brightness, and scrolls through his recent notifications.
[ NIKITA: 00:42 ] do you think the moon has feelings?
Despite his utter weariness, despite the bone-deep exhaustion curling through his blood veins, Orion smiles.
[ ORION: 00:44 ] Why do you ask?
The pause is only 13 seconds long. Orion flips onto his back and counts the faint clicks of the wall clock on his hotel room as he waits.
The half moon is spreading its glittering light through the window and Orion watches it. He doesn't know the answer to Nikita's question.
[ NIKITA: 00:44] i just wonder if it's lonely sometimes. i would be. lonely. if i was all alone in the big sky when it's dark.

notes: birthed this last night when i couldn't sleep <3 blake winter you will always be famous
She wakes up with someone's face mushed against the back of her sweaty neck and an unfamiliar pair of arms around her bare waist, clutching her tight.
Juliet blinks for a moment. This isn't a strange occurence in truth. It has happened a few times during the tour by now, but it always leaves her feeling a little out of sorts. (Probably because it has been the same person every time.)
She doesn't allow herself to lie around for more than a few minutes before untangling herself from the arms imprisoning her and getting up, putting on a white standard hotel bathrobe and tip-toeing to the bathroom.
Afterwards, Juliet boils water for one of the packets of instant coffee the hotel room provides and as she waits, she watches Blake Winter's sleeping form on her bed.
Juliet would like nothing more than to claim that Blake is just a momentary lapse of judgement – a mere notch in her bedpost or an itch she couldn't help but want to scratch. Just a meaningless after-thought swimming in her brain when she tries to sleep at night, easily forgotten in the light of day.
That would be a horrible lie.
Because she watches him now and realises that the truth is, of course, that she is endlessly, and incredibly unwisely, curious about this man. She wants to know him. She wants to see what makes him tick. She wants to study every cell of his body under a microscope lense. She wants to pull his leash tight and see if he will bark for her.

"Well. What's her name?" Kitty asks sweetly from the burgundy sofa, hands on her lap, while Morgan is perching on the armrest next to her. Morgan rolls her grey eyes rather affectionaly at her question and Farah grins sunnily at both of them.
Rebecca watches as the toddler sits on the armchair, white lace tights covering her tiny chubby legs as they move up and down slowly, hanging from the edge of the seat. Her red mary janes are abandonded on the mahogany floor and bonnet is drooping down from her neck, revealing a a wild mop of dark brown curly hair, hair strands dancing against her temples and tanned freckly cheeks as she keeps blowing bored breaths during their briefing.
Everyone is quiet and Adam pointedly doesn't look at Nate's confused handsome face as he studies the little girl.
"Bette," Rebecca answers, clicking her expensive fountain pen like it's her tongue, and looks down at the papers in front of her, shuffling them around. "No known surname."
"Very cute," Farah comments with a wink towards the tiny werewolf. Her smile is like a sunflower – summer yellow and high on her face. "How old is she, do you think?"
"We don't kn–" Rebecca starts, but then Bette raises her stubby index and middle finger as everyone watches; some with more enthusiasm than others. Two. Two years. Adam can deal with a two-year-old. Possibly. Maybe. He has to. This is his assignment and he refuses to fail the Agency.
"She doesn't know how to talk?" Nate asks with a small frown and Morgan groans.
"Who cares?" she grumbles even though she hasn't lighted up her cigarette. "It's not like she's going to stay."

There is something to be said about the fact that Niki stopped drinking almost entirely after Seven, but tonight he is so drunk on tequila that Orion would certainly disapprove if he saw him right now.
(But he isn't here. Even if Niki can hear his scolding inside his head when he takes another swig. Man, he kind of wishes Orion was here, to be honest. He is always there, but never at the same time.)
He is drunk just enough and he is looking at Triple, who is grinning toothily at him across the hotel room, shirtless and so handsome Niki can feel it all the way in his gut, thinking what if.
Triple's soft, hairy belly flexes as he laughs loudly at something Hassan quips before slapping his shoulder, and Niki stares so hard that his spinning vision is making him slightly nauseous.
He bites his lower lip, thinking.
Then Triple looks over at him and cocks his head, studying him, before taking a long swig of his beer, neck bending and adam's apple bobbing as he drinks. Niki has been caught.

notes: it's the wedding fic. you're welcome! (and i'm sorry!)
The wedding invitation is beautiful.
That is possibly what depresses Seven the most. The red envelope, the carefully chosen golden font, the expensive quality of the carton, the neatly hand-signed names at the bottom. It's all so perfect.
Nikita Rose & Orion Quinn.
The perfect happy couple who are cordially inviting Seven to their perfect and happy fucking wedding.
He would actually rather kill himself than go.
He can admit to himself quietly inside his head that he doesn't want to watch Niki kiss another man and promise to love him forever and ever right in front of him. He can picture it so clearly. Niki's happy, loving smile that used to be reserved only for him – the way the corners of his mouth curl and his stupid blue eyes light up like the sea during a sunny day.
It's so messed up that he still remembers how soft Niki's lips were against his own when they kissed for the first time all those years ago when they were so fucking in love that nothing else mattered.
Seven is so lost in his thoughts that he jumps when his phone beeps loudly in sign of a text message. He sighs and picks it up. And stops.

The day it has been exactly a year after Nate's death, Charlie stays in bed for the whole day.
Mostly she sleeps. It would be terribly poetic if she dreamed of Nate, but she doesn't – it's only pure inpenetrable darkness that she sees when her eyes are closed. She sees nothing. And that is even more upsetting than if she saw him die over and over again right before her eyes.
She rises from her bed once. To go drink water straight from the bathroom sink, throat parched from thirst. Then she goes back to bed and shivers under the blankets, feeling like she has been struck by high fever.
No one bothers her that day. Not Morgan, not Adam and not even Farah – Farah who just wants to help everyone around her, even when people can't be helped. Charlie is one of the people who is too far gone to be soothed.
At least today.
The next day she is incredibly hungry and goes downstairs to spoon blueberry jam straight from the jar. It's so sweet that she almost feels like vomiting afterwards, but she keeps it in, and eats it some more.
She feels slightly better afterwards. Like a human. It's very important to feel human in a fucked up world like this. She showers. Changes her clothes – blue denim shorts and a grey t-shirt that is so large that it might actually be Adam's.
She goes to sit by the back porch, bare feet touching the wild grass. A bee buzzes by her and lands on the flower of a clover and she watches it for a long moment.
Eventually Adam finds her. Of course he does. It's always him.

“Thank you,” you mumble, closing your eyes and burrowing further in her chest. “For coming for me.”
“I always will,” Ava says seriously. You believe her. Ava is many things, but not a liar. She might avoid the truth and come up with intricate words and sentences to do so, but you're pretty sure she has never actually lied to your face. That’s a line she doesn't cross-- not even for you.

Fenris is baking peasant bread, hands sticky with honey and flour, when there is a knock on the front door.
The Hinterlands have been quiet this morning. Earlier, when the sunlight was barely there at all, he collected blackberries from the vegetable garden with Bear, who focused on just running around chasing bees inside the small fenced area rather than helping Fenris, and everything was deadly silent – even the wind.
It is midsummer by now and hot enough that opening the windows does nothing to cool the house down, and it is making Fenris feel tired and lax in a dangerous way. He has gotten too used to the quiet life — a life without constant danger hounding his back, and he knows that feeling peaceful is the most idotic thing a man like him can feel during times like these, but it has been a number of years after Kirkwall and no one has bothered him out here. A few bandits here and there, but they were dispatched quickly enough.
read on ao3
It was the beginning of the summer when Hawke built the cottage with his own hands with a grin on his handsome face as he hammered wood together with seemingly no idea what he was doing. Fenris shook his head as he watched him and felt like a fool for loving someone so much.
Bear boofs unhappily at the noise, but doesn’t rise up from his place by the window, though his tails start wagging ever so slightly. Fenris frowns and wipes his flour crusty hands on a linen towel. He does not have visitors often. Or ever.
His sword is by the fireplace, and Fenris picks it up, when he walks to the door. He doesn’t flinch when there is another, louder, knock, but the line of his mouth deepens and his brows furrow further.
He opens the door, sword heavy in his sweaty hands, and that is when everything stops. Even his heart.
It is Hawke behind the door. Somehow Fenris knew that before seeing that. The man is different and the same as he was before. The same tousled dark brown curls, the same coloured lonely eye. The same unkempt rough beard, the same gentle hopeful smile.
The same man that Fenris loved so dearly. Without him he has been a husk of a man; without him, he has turned back into a shadow in the corner of the room — silent and invisible.
“Hawke,” he growls. He grips his sword tighter, knuckles turning white, lyrium flaring blue, because Hawke is dead. His body was not burned in a pyre, but he was dead all the same.
Years ago, Varric wrote him a letter. There was such grief in the words that Fenris felt it through the letters, when he traced them with a bare fingertip as he slowly pronounced the words as he read, the ink smudging with his bitter tears of heartache.
And years ago in the wretched city of Kirkwall, which Fenris both hates and loves, Sebastian taught him that dead can't ever pass through the Veil to the waking world. Those were demons possessing a corpse, and now Fenris looks at Hawke and knows that he is not the same man he was, when he left. He has changed.
“Fenris,” Hawke whispers, voice a low gravel. There is something very tender about the way he says his name. It sounds the same it did an age ago. He cannot trust it.
Hawke takes a brave step forward, so near that the tip of Fenris's sword presses against his burly chest. He breathes in and out slowly, the blade digging into the soft flesh, and Fenris does not know what to do or say.
He keeps swallowing and Hawke keeps looking at him, something fiercely gentle in his dark brown eye. But he does not reach for him, does not try to touch Fenris, and Fenris thinks that that might be the first clue to Hawke being real. Hawke never pushed, never demanded, never took without permission — he waited patiently, like the tide waits for the evening to land.
Fenris trembles. His blade drops to the ground, when Hawke embraces him so tightly that his ribs ache. Or maybe it is just his heart that is hurting. It is beating like a terrified rabbit.
“Fenris,” Hawke whispers again and when he pulls away from the hug to look at Fenris, his broad hands on Fenris shoulders, he beams like the midday sun. Fenris Fenris Fenris, he keeps whispering under his breath, like he has just learned the name and is tasting it on his tongue for the first time.
Fenris closes his eyes and pulls Hawke impossibly closer, fingers gripping his cloak, nails sinking through the fabric to the firm meat of Hawke's shoulder. He has forgotten how much taller Hawke is than him. He engulfs Fenris in his hug, chin resting on the crown of Fenris's head, and for a moment Fenris feels trapped, but the feeling passes.
He cannot speak for his feelings are swallowing him whole. So, he only holds on tighter, grounding himself in Hawke's warmth and scent. For the time being he does not even care that this might not be his Hawke, that it might be an imposter wearing his clothing; that he might regret letting this man, who might be a stranger after all these years, into his home.
That is a problem for future Fenris. Right now he can't bring himself to care as he helps stumbling Hawke inside his home despite knowing better.

Fenris has grown out his hair.
It dips between his shoulder blades now, a flare of stark white slithering down his naked back, as he is getting ready for bed.
(These are his last few days in Kirkwall, before it gets ravaged by a single desperate man's actions, though he does not yet know it.)
Fenris is aware that Hawke is staring. Has been for several long moments now. In fact he seldom does anything else when Fenris is in the same room as him. It does not bother him anymore, even if he still finds it strange.
For a moment Fenris considers teasing Hawke's unsubtleness, but decides against it, because of the sheer tiredness he feels. He sighs, flexing his arm and watching the lyrium flicker under his skin. He does not hear Hawke getting out of bed, but he does hear the tenderness of the kiss that Hawke presses on his nape. It's almost a worshipful act in its sincerity, and something in Fenris aches for it. For Hawke. Sometimes it feels it is all he does, and he has not grown used to it yet.
Hawke murmurs something against his skin. It might be a declaration of devotion, it might be a compliment, it might be… something else. Fenris hums under his breath and Hawke presses another kiss to the back of his neck and then another. He has to brush Fenris's hair back to be able to touch skin, and Fenris feels a slight thrill in his stomach at the chapped press of Hawke's lips.
Hawke curls his arms around Fenris's waist and settles his chin on top of Fenris's head and for a moment they simply are like everyone else. Fenris has to close his eyes because of the all-consuming feeling inside his chest swelling.
Everything in this moment, every moment with Hawke, is sacred to him in a way he cannot describe. He wants an eternity more of them.

Isabela bets one of her endless amounts of golden rings. Fenris folds. Damian tsks under his breath and adds three sovereigns to the pile, and just grins and winks wickedly at Fenris's raised eyebrow.
Carver scowls down at his stupid (and very bad) cards and rubs the back of his neck. He is pretty damn sure both Isabela and Damian are cheating their arses off and he absolutely refuses to let them win. It's a matter of Hawke pride.
He takes a large gulp of his beer and bets his dagger. One of the few things Father ever gave him when he was still alive. Damian raises his eyebrows before frowning lightly, but Carver's jaw is flexed stubbornly. It's a stupid little thing – little more than a dull kitchen knife, but it has always meant something for Carver, and his big brother knows it. Isabela ponders Carver with her gaze for a long time, and Carver is starting to get more than a little flustered, before she sighs theatrically and adds yet another ring of hers in the growing pile of betted items, linking her hands under her chin innocently.
Damian eyes Carver warily and Carver huffs under his breath as Damian takes his sodding damn time deciding what to do. Eventually he bets as well: his hoop earring this time, and Carver's nerves twitch. He doesn't want to lose the dagger, but he also dislikes losing more than anything, which is a bad, bad combination. He clenches his teeth and bets yet again.
The game goes on forever and eventually Fenris leaves to his mansion with a grunt of goodbye, and Isabela folds with a sigh, bored, and goes looking for stronger drinks and company.
Damian wins the game in the end, because of course he fucking does. Carver is pretty sure he hasn’t lost a single game of Wicked Grace in his life unintentionally. For a moment both of them just stare at each other, before Damian sighs and pockets the money and Isabela's rings and pushes the dagger across the table back to Carver.
“Never bet anything you're not willing to lose, little brother,” he says with a gentler sort of grin, and Carver rolls his eyes so hard they almost turn backwards. He doesn't thank him, before picking up the dagger sullenly and pocketing it.
“Did you cheat?” Carver asks, folding his arms across his powerful chest.
“I always do,” Damian answers with a cheeky wink and sips his ale, his attention already wandering away.
“Teach me,” Carver demands then, and Damian looks very surprised for a moment, before he smiles, eye corners crinkling, and starts shuffling the cards again.
“Pay attention, dear brother,” he drawls. “I'll teach you how to never lose again.”

After the duel she meets with the future king of Ferelden.
He is furious. Of course he is. She has just betrayed him in the worst way possible, and nothing will ever be the same. He is to become a king and she is to remain a Grey Warden – both bound by duty. There will be no more room for hushed conversations by the fire, warm teasing on the road and shared food in their tents, when everything becomes too much for both of them.
She has lost everything and is losing more still. Her best friend looks at her like she is his worst enemy. Perhaps she is.
“I can be civil”, Alistair says, teeth clenched, “but that is just about all you'll get from me.”
Fair enough.
Ashara looks down, biting her lip. She doesn't look up as she says: “I am sorry. For what it's worth.”
“It's not worth very much in this situation,” Alistair says, and Ashara nods, because she understands better than he might think.
“I couldn’t do it. Killing a man in cold-blood like that… It just felt wrong,” she confesses. She might be a bit of a hypocrite.
Alistair is silent for a moment before answering. “You’ve killed men for less.”
He is right.
“Don’t you think Duncan and the others deserved justice?” Alistair says and now his voice is rising. “It was not in your right!”
Ashara opens her mouth. Closes it.
“Duncan would have made the same decision as me,” she finally says quietly and she knows it’s the wrong thing to say, but it doesn't even matter anymore. She has already lost hlm.
For a moment Alistair looks like he is going to explode but then he only sighs. “Maybe. That doesn't make it right.”
“I’m sorry,” Ashara says again, but it’s futile.
“I don't believe you,” Alistair says, his usually warm eyes dark like a brewing storm. Ashara swallows. “Your hands might as well be wet with their blood.”
Then he turns his back on her and leaves the room. The door slams shut behind him, and she winces.
After a moment of staring after him Ashara glances at her hands.

Solas is a curious man.
He speaks of elves and spirits and magic, loss and beauty and history and future. He looks at the markings on Fenris's skin and feels pity, he looks at the green glowing anchor and feels fascination.
Fenris can see it in his eyes: Solas is hungry. For what he does not know yet. The first time they meet is in Haven, and Fenris grits his teeth the whole time they speak. He does not care for his fancy words that mean nothing and everything at the same time.
Solas is a dangerous anomaly but Fenris has bigger worries than trying to figure him out. Furthermore he does not care enough about this man, who looks at Fenris like he belongs to an art gallery. He has a green glowing hand and the sky has been ripped open – he has no time for games of chase..
The fact that he does not care enough to investigate Solas will be his undoing later, he finds out, when the Dread Wolf rises.
That will be his downfall when he falls in love with a man who will end everything he values and holds dear.
Happy Friday and welcome to DADWC! I'm curious about August and Carver Hawke, if it fits them then how about "next time, warn me when you pull a stunt like that. i want to be with you."?

Carver shouldn't be even mildly surprised by anything the bloody tosser does anymore.
Furthermore he shouldn't even care. So what if the prick gets himself killed by doing some elaborate mad stunt in the middle of the battle to save Carver's life? Carver can take care of himself. He's been a Grey Warden for three years now and he didn't ask for a saviour. He has finally made something of himself. He is a Hawke. He knows how to rip and tear and bite. He knows how to gracefully accept death that is coming for him.
He would have handled it. He could have handled the stupid ogre.
He didn't need his help.
He tosses his helmet to the ground and kicks it for good measure. Some of the senior Wardens shake their heads and exchange glances with each other, but he doesn't care. He’s stomping towards the tent August is sitting in front of, nursing two broken ribs and a fractured wrist.
August sees him approach and he mutters something to the healer, who nods and takes his leave, eyeing Carver warily under his thick brows.
For a moment he and August just stare at each other. Then Carver scowls, and August quirks his eyebrow.
“You're a fucking wanker,” says Carver eventually, and August throws him a tired grin. There is dried blood on his lips, and Carver scowls harder.
“Am I?” August asks. “Here I thought that was you.”
Maker, Carver has probably never met anyone as infuriating as this man.
“You think you're funny, do you?”
August sighs and looks away. “Look…” he starts.
Carver waits. He feels like there are insects under his skin; they're making him itch all over and unable to stay still.
“I'm not going to tell you I’m sorry for doing it,” August continues. The sincerity of his next words bleeds through. “I will never be sorry for taking a blow for you if it means you're alright.”
Carver smiles a little. It's shakier than he means it to be. For a moment he wonders what would happen if he admitted to August that he was scared during that moment. He still is – all the fucking time he is scared.
“I know,” he mutters, scratching the back of his sweat-damp neck.
August rises to his feet. “I'm going to kiss you now,” he says slowly, and Carver sighs long-sufferingly, but is kind enough to bend down for August to be able to reach his lips.
They kiss for a long time and it’s gentler than usual. Usually it’s all teeth and tongue and bruises. But not today with certain things too raw and close to their chests.
“Next,” Carver mumbles against August’s dry mouth, “warn me when you pull a stunt like that, you tosser.”
August laughs breathlessly and kisses him harder.
I don’t want to be without you, Carver thinks a little hopelessly. He’s not brave enough to say it aloud yet.
