I started processing the fleece, I have 2 batches scoured (abt 300g total before scouring) and abt 17g totally processed. It’s going slowly as I figure it out and since i’m having to flick open every lock it might just be quicker to spin directly from that flicked lock instead of combing it. Not sure i’ll have to experiment a little.
I’m trying to separate out the colors a bit to maybe do some color work? We’ll see!
Also a bird stole some of the fleece to make a nest!

I love the crimp structure it’s so pretty :) any tips on processing BFL are greatly appreciated I’ve never processed a fleece before!
Hello! Congratulations on such a beautiful fleece!
How you process it depends a lot of what you like! Personally I like a fair bit on lanolin in my fiber, so for anything that is not out right sticky with lanolin I do a cold wash process
However! Many folks do not like this! To find out try washing a small section in a cold method and the other in a hot scouring and spin them up. Or for some people even just feeling the washed fiber will tell them a lot, especially if they hate the lanolin feeling.

How you want to prep the washed fiber is completely up to your preferred spinning methods/what tools you have available.
A lot of carding can be done with inexpensive dog brushes and you can always just open up the locks and spin like from the lock. Personally I find long stable length fiber tricky on carders but that might just be me!
Each preparation method will want to spin in its own way!
I would definitely not stress about finding the perfect method, but rather experiment. Maybe Pull off a section and try a few different prep methods? When I am processing a new fleece type I normally do that and do a handful of test spins to see which is like best. Nothing is more disappointing that putting dozens of hours in the prep that it turns out you hate to spin!
Personally for BFL I like a combed prep, but spinning from a well cut lock can be quite similar as the fibers are all aligned still. Combs are wonderful but if you cant find them used they are quite pricey.

Not to give away all of my secrets but if you’re looking for affordable fleeces to process reach out to your local metro park mine has a petting zoo with a bunch of heritage sheep breeds! I’m getting a 3lb BFL fleece for $20 and they also had gotland, shetland, southdown, lincoln, tunis, jacob, navajo-churro and a bunch more! I really recommend reaching out, I cold emailed them and they responded pretty quickly

Finished the remaining 50g of this fractal spin today! Started spinning it today and spun + plied + skeined 52g in just over 4 hrs total. It’s about 260 yards which is less than the first skein so idk what happened, they’re around the same wpi but i’ll have to remeasure once this ones dry 🤨
For my first TdF challenge day I continued spinning a bit of the Corriedale (over 2/3 done!) but also started some lichen dye jars! It’s crushed up lichen and a mix of 2/3 water and 1/3 ammonia. It’ll take about a month but I’m planning on dyeing some of my handspun with it if it works out (should be a purple🤞🤞).
All of the lichen is from dead branches that were in my mom’s fire pit to be burned so I got as much as I could off of the branches. If you’re not getting it from a burn pile do not take all of the lichen as it grows super slowly and some varieties are endangered!! I threw about half of the branches back into the woods without taking anything from them to keep them from getting burned
Spun 50g of corriedale from SheepShedByDonna for day 3 of TdF and then wound it onto an extra bobbin w a drill, i still have 200g left so I’ll be working on it for the next couple of days. This is my first time spinning long draw and I really like it so far
I got a spinning wheel today!!! It was from facebook marketplace and only $25! I’m genuinely so ecstatic, I have oiled it and replaced the leather washers + connectors with new leather bc it was plasticized or something and was squeaking quite badly. It’s a double drive wheel and this is such perfect timing for tour de fleece, it starts tomorrow!
Just finished half of this fiber, It’ll be 100g total (the original had some yellow that i took out) and might end up being socks? or a hat or smth not quite sure yet
I also played around a bit with trying to spin a boucle yarn, it actually turned out pretty well but I used a core thread that wasn’t grippy enough so i’m going to try it again with a proper core thread and see if i like it better. 🤞🤞

Just finished a tablet woven band from my new loom (my 3rd band so far on this loom)! It’s hopefully going to end up being shoelaces but I’m not sure if it’s too thick or if it’ll be fine 🤞🤞

I’ve done one coat of oil but I think it may need 2+ so when I finish my current band i’ll probably do another one, I mostly used this instructable but changed some of the peg placement (made the adjustable/tension one not the furthest one back):

Just started a pair of socks with the most gorgeous shade of pink you’ve ever seen. It’s somehow more neon in person and i’m obsessed with it.
Washing and laying out my handknit socks that i wore the last week and a half and I didn’t realize how much I gravitate towards the pink and purple pairs :) I’m about to start a neon pink pair and I’m sure it’ll get worn a bunch
also if anyone has any tips on how to get the black staining from my boots out of the purple + white striped ones please lmk it’s not visible when i’m wearing them but yk :/
I just got back from a fiber fest and I bought too much ðŸ˜
I got 2 skeins of sock yarn and the Cirro by fibre co, they’re going out of business so it was 1/2 off and only $7 for the skein. It’s 40% cotton which was so surprising it doesn’t feel like cotton. The purple skein has 20% silk and I’ve been looking for a super bright pink for socks for ages it’s perfect
And some stuff to spin! I’m super excited about the alk&me braid it has silk! The BFL was labeled wrong and is a steal, I was expecting to pay the higher price but she honored the label which was super kind. The dark gray is 80% angora and 20% wool and I got to pet the rabbit that it came from! It was so soft

I’m spinning with roving instead of top for the first time in a while and i forgot how wonderfully easy it is to draft. the top i was working with for a while was a little bit felted and this is a dream compared to it

I made a Rybka pouch! I couldn’t buy the pattern so it’s my guess based on looking at photos but I think it turned out pretty good!
I’m also making some lilac syrup from the trees in my yard :) I usually make it every year and i’m super excited it’s usually pretty good
