The aim of the hermetic philosophy lies in the uniting of the spiritual with the material. Thus the coat-of-arms of the hermetic art reflects the splendor of the Sun, uniting the planets in the heavens above with the alchemical work in the world of matter below.

The ouroboros is traditionally depicted as a serpent or dragon in the process of swallowing its own tail, resulting in the formation of a circle. Unsurprisingly the ouroboros is most often regarded as a symbol of infinity and renewal, though it is also widely interpreted to be demonstrating the principles of cyclical transformation and the creation of life through death. It has also been used as a symbol for totality, self-sufficiency, androgyny, mercury, and truth.

The fiery triangle: the symbol for the divine; the serpent symbolizing the cyclical nature of life and death, infinity, and the hexagram or six-pointed star unifying the masculine element (fire: the triangle pointing upwards) and the feminine element (water: the triangle pointing downwards).
