A Birthday Cake for George Washington by Ramin Ganeshram and Vanessa Brantly-Newton is the story of Hercules, the President’s head chef, as he attempts to bake Washington a cake for his birthday celebration. The story, as told by Hercules’ daughter Delia, takes a turn for the worse as Hercules discovers there is no sugar in the cupboard.

In late 1796 or early 1797 Hercules managed to escape from Mount Vermon in Virginia (Washington’s plantation). He escaped back to Philadelphia but was also believed to have lived in NYC for a while. In 1797 Louis-Phillpe (future King of France) visited Mount Vermon and wrote in his diary that Delia was very happy that her father escaped even if it meant never seeing him again.

In 1801 Hercules wad legally freed by George Washington’s will. He was probably never made aware of that fact. His children and wife were the “property” of Martha Washington and we’re never freed.
