Fairy tales have always been stories that individuals have longed to be part of. It’s nice to dream of a place where the hero wins, happily ever after is real, and everything gets tied up with a pretty bow afterwards. For some, these tales are destiny, and others are meant only to read them. The keeper of these Fairytales is usually Fairy Godmothers. They are trained to be guides on these journeys and to make sure the right people get their happily ever afters. Francesa has never been interested in serving without getting something in return. Born into the most prominent Godparent family, Francesca was set to a high standard before she could even walk. It was her duty to make sure others were given their happy ending. In hindsight, it should have felt like the greatest honor to make sure others lived the lives they were destined to have, but Francesca wondered what about her? Was she supposed to make life easier for others but get nothing in return? That just wouldn’t do. No, Francesca knew she deserved so much more in life. And she intended to get it one way or another. 

She never quite lived up to the reputation of her cousin, Fae Goodwin, who was considered the standard of what a Fairy Godmother should be, but she made a name for herself nevertheless. Francesca thought her ticket to the good life came in the form of a Charmont prince. The Charmonts were esteemed royalty, protected and favored by the Goodwins. Francesca knew that if she had a child with one and they became king, her life would be set up for good. Not only would she be powerful in her own magic, but she’d have her hands in the pockets of kings. The plan would have gone off without a hitch if it weren’t for one overlooked detail: the charmont she was having a child with was not the future king. In fact, he was the youngest brother. The chances of their son ever seeing the crown were slim to none. This wouldn’t do for Francesca. She would make sure her son would see a crown. As for her lover? Well, she took care of him. It was sad he had to go, but Francesca did not appreciate being lied to. 

Francesca knew the best way to get ahead was to turn being a Fairy Godmother into a business. She created the best potions in the land, with a 99% success rate for all her clients. She helped people, but for a price. When people were desperate, they couldn’t refuse. One of her favorite clients happened to be Harold Frosch. The poor little frog had fallen in love with a princess. He asked Francesca for her help to win over his true love. She agreed to help him become the prince he was always destined to be if he vowed that his firstborn daughter would marry her son. 

Harold agreed, love clouding his decision. He never anticipated that Francesca would curse his daughter to become an ogre once night fell, but Francesca assured him it was all part of her plan. Fairy Godmothers ensured that princesses got their happily ever afters; nothing screamed that more than true love’s kiss breaking a curse. The plan was foolproof, at least, she thought so until a meddling little Lord decided to ruin her plans. She should have noticed that her happily ever after potion had gone missing. It was her most sought-after spell. When Channing came to her, saying that Fiona was gone, she put the pieces together that Lord Farquaad was attempting to get back at her for not giving him a princess of his own, but she owed nothing to the son of a grumpy dwarf and pea-sized princess. Neither he nor this ogre that was parading around to be a human would stop her plans. And so she took matters into her own hands. She sought the help of the notorious bounty hunter Puss in Boots. She was well aware of the debt he wanted to repay, and she would give him that and more if he took out Seumas. 

It was during this that she heard of the unfortunate death of Channing's cousin, Prince Philip Charmont, and the king of Ulstead. Her cousin Fae contacted her in panic, urging her to come to Elias and help aid in their efforts to defend the light. A prince’s story had ended in a way it wasn’t intended to. Happily ever afters were in danger if the darkness grew. Stories were being rewritten. Francesca came to Elias, but not to help Fae as she had promised her. No, her interest was piqued elsewhere. The Underland was a city shrouded in mystery. A place where evil festered and the forgotten wandered. It was the perfect place to set up a new shop. Desolate and desperate individuals were looking for a way out, and Francesca had the answers they sought. She had no intentions of being a Hell Baron, but she respected his efforts. As long as she was able to do as she pleased with her potions and gave a small cut to Hades, she was content. 

Fairy Godmothers were meant to guide protagonists to their deserved ending. To keep the light from growing dark. Francesca Fortuna no longer wanted to be that sort of Fairy Godmother. The Underland now gave her the place to gain the power she always wanted. No crown was needed now, but that didn’t stop her from trying to get rid of Seumas and his ragtag ensemble once and for all because ogres didn’t get to live in fairy tales, and no amount of potion was ever going to change that.
