Anybody remember the time that someone claimed that Medusa being punished for the rape in the later version was actually a gift from Athena to protect her from men..? because Iâm still not over how detached from the context, and detached from the authorâs (pretty dang obvious) intent, and straight up inaccurate that was. Like, you can like Greek/Roman mythology without making it progressive, because the past wasnât progressive⌠like, it wasnât a completely dumbass barbaric Mad-Max-in-a-chariot hellscape, but it wasnât progressive.

She did kill a lot of people, to be fair.
We all have our moments
She killed a lot of people AFTER she was turned into a monster by her own goddess as punishment for being raped to be fair
Well not technically. The myths where she killed people were first told before her backstory was adapted to the rape one, so technically she was initially a titan that killed people (ergo the bad guy), then she was given a new backstory where the authorâs intent was (most likely, although I canât ask him to be 100% certain) that she was still in the wrong - by being so beautiful that men wanted her and that Poseidon raped her, by running to Athenaâs temple for help, and by desecrating the temple by being raped in it. Obviously we know thatâs bullshit and not her being in the wrong - she didnât do anything actually wrong in that backstory - but the point of the post wasnât âDid Medusa do anything wrong through a modern lense?â it was âSurely a modern analysis should be that it was weird and misogynistic to adapt her backstory like that (because Ovid, and probably other people, just liked adding weird sexual tragedy elements later on, to make myths about female monsters into previously beautiful women), and the person a I saw while back on here, who was changing it further by trying to claim that Athena did it to protect her, was just misrepresenting the past.â Itâs pretty damn clear, like without question, in that version of the story that Athena is punishing her. (Also, even a shitty backstory doesnât mean you get to go on a killing spree.)
People really misunderstand that a lot of the God/Goddesses were jerks. They didnât have the same human sense of right/wrong/morality/etc. The people who wrote their myths didnât intend for them to be sympathetic really⌠They kinda made their stories as cautionary tales because (and this is from my philosophy class where we discussed greek myths) arguably, if the gods were kind people wouldnât behave themselves.Â
Depends on the writer, I mean, look at Dionysus - some witers thought that there were two of him, some saying the older one was a wise man with a beard and horns, and the younger a flamboyant and effeminate man who liked men and women, some say Zagreus is Orphic Dionysus and that Dionysus is one person, some say that Dionysus and Zagreus are two different people, some say that Zagreus is the son of Hades and some say that he is Hades, some say Dionysus is the son of Persephone, some Demeter, some Semele, some say that he was eaten when he was dismembered as a kid, some say he wasnât, some say he was reborn in Zeusâ leg, some in Semele, some say that they ground up and ate his heart to rebirth him, some say that they just sewed it in there, some say Semele died after seeing Zeusâ form, and some say that didnât happen at all, some say that Zagreus or Dionysus is the most powerful god and destined to inherent Hadesâ or Zeusâ throne, and yet neither Zagreus nor Dionysus were in the main pantheon for a huge break of several hundred years while worship of Dionysus was suppressed until he was added back to the main twelve, but he was in the main group prior to that and was probably a very important god in Mycenaean Greece, and donât even get me started on Iacchus, Bacchus, Liber, or any of his many names and nicknames, what about how in older versions Dionysus is a mad god of wine and rebirth who tears people limb from limb and drives them mad, in cults heâs a god of the underprivileged and oppressed who gives them freedom through drunken states of eurphoria and possession, then he gradually transitions into a fun party and theater god who the privileged even claimed to be the human incarnation of, and I could go on for hours about the fact that nobody could decide on a single consistent thing about this guy except for the fact that he invented wine⌠sike, thatâs also thought to be a later addition, after an already established wine cult of the oppressed and underprivileged made its way to Mycenaean Greece and merged with Dionysus worship, and we think that Dionysus was at the time some kind of death god due to his death and rebirth origin story. People have literally adapted his name to use it as a plural, because thereâs so many conflicting stories, different people being claimed to be him, different versions of him, and debate about how many of him there were, that itâs basically impossible to study him or talk about him without using his name as a plural at some point. And thatâs just one character out of literally hundreds and hundreds - like, everybody has several names, several versions, several conflicting stories - itâs absolute and unapologetic chaos.
So with that in mind, you really canât make any kind of claim about the Greek and Roman gods like that they had no morality or were supposed to represent something, because the poets, sculptors, artists, scribes, and so forth had absolutely no intention of being consistent across the hundreds and hundreds of years that these stories were told - itâd be like trying to make a claim that was true of every iteration of a Spiderman comic, if most people sang Spiderman comics and didnât write them down, there had been hundreds more authors over hundreds more years, Stan Lee had never written down or been in video saying anything about his intentions with Spiderman, and you were looking back at it hundreds of years later. Like, just look at Zombie!Spiderman from Marvel Zombies, Spiderpig, all that stuff, and imagine if somebody from a couple thousand years in the future was looking and that and trying to figure out who the fuck Spiderman is. To be completely honest, without knowing the intentions of each author, and every step in the game of Chinese Whispers that is Greek and Roman mythology, we donât always know for certain how A became Z. However, we do know that (like was said in the post that started me talking about Greek mythology last night, and like the point I was making in OP) the characters arenât progressive, perfect beacons of feminism⌠the times werenât like that and so their stories werenât like that, and there are plenty of examples of stories where the characters do things that would be beyond fucked up through a modern lense. So itâs historically inaccurate for people (as they tend to do on this website) to misrepresent those stories to paint them as whatever suits that personâs morality and ideology, because of some shallow fascination with the surface level of Greek mythology, but no actual desire to delve deeper into it and drop your moral judgment for the sake of learning.
What we do know is that a lot of the adaptations (like the Medusa one) that featured female monsters being remained as beautiful rape victims or envied by female gods for their beauty came from Ovid and other Roman poets, and seemed to follow a period of female monsters being painted and sculpted with more attractive faces than their initial monstrous depictions when they were simply titans - whether there was also a gradual shift in the story telling is hard to tell, itâs likely, and itâs likely that these Roman poets didnât just decide overnight to entirely redo the backstory and everybody went âThis version is better.â - it was probably somewhat of a gradual change, but it does seem to show a difference between the Roman versions (which are often the ones that are more well known today) and the original Greek ones, which seemed to often be, at least in part, them making sense of things about the world (like the fact that weâve found what couldâve been the inspiration for the Theseus and the Minotaur story, in the form of a complex labyrinth). From my own Classical Civilization classes and Philosophy classes, Iâd say that Greek mythology is better understood as a combination of folklore, urban myth, and entertainment, with religion not being the main essence of it (although, obviously, there were religious elements), instead of thinking of it as their equivalent to how a Christian might view and experience Christianity. These were stories that you would hear being sung by poets in the street, they were cautionary tales at times (like how people in the middle ages may warn children of the werewolves and river dwelling creatures in the woods to stop them going into the woods or the water, while also likely believing in said things themselves because of sightings and previous unexplained events; and like how even some modern stories have morals and messages), they were entertainment at other times, they were elements of worship at other times, and they were ways to explain the strange and complex features of the world that they didnât understand, to ease the fear of death, to give strength and bravery to those about to charge into battle, and so on. It wasnât just about making people behave themselves (Dionysus and his original rebellious wine cult, who were pretty dead set on doing the exact opposite of âbehaving themselvesâ or âstaying in their placeâ, are a pretty good testament to that), and it probably wasnât even mostly about making people behave themselves, because they were sung by poets, crafted by artists - they werenât the creations of the people with political control (hence the common theme of said people being greedy assholes who suffer for it; and hence the common themes of adventure and wanderlust, with adventurers being rewarded and made legends, rather than a theme of staying home and obeying the ruler - dissent against gods, broken promises, and the like led to hardship, but the heroic adventurer usually won and succeeded in some way in the end), and so they werenât created for political control (at least until you get to Rome and some later parts of Greece, where the state seems to get more domain over the mythology and you do see more shifts towards that sort of thing - like threats of Dionysus removing you dick if you donât attend his festivals and theater shit). These stories are closer to Shakespeareâs plays than they are to holy books.

(Also, even a shitty backstory doesnât mean you get to go on a killing spree.)
Thatâs pretty interesting. And Iâve seen that post too⌠how could anyone possibly see Athenaâs actions as âtrying to protect Medusa from rapeâ at all? The Gods are assholes in Greek mythology, everyone knows this. The Gods are rapists and the Goddesses are incredibly fucking petty and violent themselvesâhell, I think even they do the raping in some myths!
Greek mythology is such a weird thing to talk about overall though because at the end of the day, I donât think anyone knows the original myths, and theyâve been re-adapted so many times, over and over again. And people gotta remember that, while Iâm sure some of the female mythological figures who deserved better have been re-adapted before to show that, most of the time the female figures got fucked over so damn much in most of what we know.
If we wanna talk about feminism and Greek mythology, we should talk about how completely unfair the treatment of womenâeven BY other womenâtends to be, and how that was reflective of the times in which the Greek myths started, how the times have gotten better and in modern times, we ourselves have the power to write our own adaptations of these characters where they are treated better. Medusa definitely being one of them if we go by Ovidâs version of her story.
And eh fair enough.
Yeah, to what extent and in what way depends massively on the specific poet, artists, etc - Greek and Roman mythology is a giant chaotic clusterfuck of a bazillion different conflicting stories for a bazillion different characters (some of whom may or may not be the same people, depending on who you ask), so thereâs no real overarching theme or style that covers it all, because weâre talking about countless authors. They get more rapey and violent and dictator-y in the Roman poetsâ versions, and even worse to women, while Mycenaean Greece tended to be more focused on death and rebirth and the like. But whatever way you slice it and wherever you look, killing and being at least a little dickish were pretty common themes - feminism definitely wasnât a common theme. Women usually werenât treated well back then (most people werenât treated well, there were slaves, second class citizens, etc), and thatâs part of why the cult of Dionysus (the earlier one, with the whole rebellion and freedom from an oppressive society thing) seemed to have such a high population of women. I mean, there is the story of Ariadne, which does have a slightly sympathetic message towards women in the fact that in rushing to abandon her and break his promise, Theseus forgot to change the sails and thus caused his fatherâs suicide (Iâve actually seen feminists on tumblr reimagine that as her leaving him, and him forgetting the sails in sadness, which actually removes one of very few pro-woman moments/messages, in favour of one that renders her the one breaking the promise and his fatherâs death her fault, just for the sake of not having a woman be in love with a man). Whether she went on to kill herself or marry Dionysus though depends on which version youâre going by, and sheâs not described as particularly attractive (thus not subject to the whole âShe deserved it for being hot.â theme that Ovid and other Roman adaptations especially tended to subject to female characters - like the aforementioned Medusa), so that myth kind of stands out in that little section⌠but then you remember that the whole situation arose because of some complex fuckery with a magical bull from Poseidon that led to Minosâ wife being punished for Minos breaking his promise to Poseidon, in the form of bestiality and a freaky half-bull son. Thinking about it, âdonât break promises or people you love will sufferâ is a big theme in the Theseus and the Minotaur myth, one that often gets overlooked in modern interpretations because people just focus on the labyrinth part and political turmoil.
And yeah, people are wholly welcome to reimagine things and write their own stories - but making claims about the original stories and their intentions that are obviously misrepresenting them, just because they have a surface level enjoyment of the mythology but donât want to delve deeper into it or learn about it without moral judgment, and would rather it simply morph to suit their interests instead of them taking an interest in it, isnât how people should go about discussing these things or the morality of them through a modern lense.

She did kill a lot of people, to be fair.
in fact i think some elements of the past were more progressive than the âprogressiveâ hypocritical bs we have today. itÂ
They also did kill a lot of people.
They also had slaves, second class citizens, indentured servantsâŚ
They werenât progressive.
Anyway in Ovidâs telling of the story (the one where Medusa was raped, not the one we think was the original where she was just born a titan) the author actually does think that Medusa did a couple of things wrong⌠and heâs wrong, if you want to actually analyse his story at face value and assess the morality of what happened as if it actually happened. Anyway, his telling says that her crimes were firstly that she was so pretty that Poseidon decided to rape her, and secondly that she ran to Athenaâs temple to ask for protection from this, and thirdly that she desecrated the temple by being raped in it. A real feminist or egalitarian interpretation is âWow, Ovid didnât understand shit, and also was misogynistic as hell, and also why even change the backstory to that?â and not the âWell Athena was actually just trying to protect her by turning her into a hideous monster that kills people.â thing that the person that Iâm referring to in the OP (from ages ago) came up with.
So yeah, if things like âIf you get raped in a temple, you deserve to be punished for desecrating said temple.â is progressive to you⌠then honestly youâve got bigger problems than the left. Like, donât invalidate how shitty attitudes of the past were just to be snarky about your political opponents, at least not on my post, because I care about history.

Tumblr needs to collectively recognize that Greek mythology is one of the most misogynistic ones to exist and the only reason theyâre so attached to it and want it to be feminist and trendy is because of how ubiquitous it is in Western pop culture.
Theyâre attached to it because they read Percy Jackson in high school and think thatâs how Greek mythology is.Â
Greek mythology is to tumblr lesbians what WW II is to nerdy dudes
That would explain the incessant desire to woobify female monsters.
Itâs always funny when people sum up Greek Mythology as âthe Gods are assholesâ because⌠yes, yes that was the point. They were as fallible as humans but had cosmic power thatâs an inherent recipe for disaster. And not to get too galaxy brained about this but does anyone really think weâre beyond the Greco-Roman mythos when people were (and still are) absolutely deadset on painting a bunch of high schoolers as some new face of white supremacy not even a month ago? Yeah, alright then
To be fair about the âwoobify female monsters,â itâs not HARD to see many of those monsters as tragic because oftentimes they just got a raw deal. Medusa was raped and punished by her own goddess for said rape by being turned into a hideous monster who then had to be mercy-killed before she hurt anyone else.
Scylla was another fucked up story - some creepy fish-man named Glaucos thought she was hot and she wanted nothing to do with him, he went to a witch named Circe for help but Circe liked Glaucos and turned Scylla into a horrifying monster out of petty jealousy.
Whatâs funny is in both cases these women were victimized by other women, something that tends to get erased whenever feminists try to âreimagineâ their stories. (Medusaâs is easier to ignore Athenaâs roll in it because she was raped and killed by men, Scylla mysteriously never gets brought up for some reason). Guess it doesnât match the agenda to say other women with more power screwed them over the most.
That and holy crap is it not a unified mythos either. You have two different Medusa stoeies (the rape one, and one where it was a punishment for some shady shit she and her susters did) and the whole Scylla thing is made worse when you realize Circe is more of a mortal than half the male heroes of the Trojan war.
The real unteresting thing is how Aphrodite practically evolved from Ishtar by most understandings.
âAphrodite practically evolved from Ishtarâ, thatâŚmakes way too much sense. The thot of the fertile crescent evolving into the thot of the Aegean sea.
Thereâs more than two Medusa stories, the myths were passed on by word of mouth by poets, interpreted and transformed by artists and sculptors, rewritten by other poets, reinterpreted, rewritten, and so on⌠thereâs likely tonnes (like, just look at all of the forms of Dionysus, from a god of the wine cult of the underprivileged and oppressed who drank to be free, to a terrifying god of madness and rebirth in Mycenaean Greece, to a somewhat toned down version that aimed to re-join the main pantheon again after a few hundred years break that still had a tendency to tear people limb from limb, to an increasingly toned down version over time, to an unexpectedly added dick festival with threats of dick removal for those not attending, to him becoming the Roman party wine god Bacchus that the privileged adored; look the versions of Ariadne and Theseus, from her being left on the island and killing herself, to her going on to marry Dionysus and becoming a goddess - well, if she wasnât already kinda one because everyone has some distant relation to some godly asshole in this chaotic and massive family tree⌠but itâs a good example of modern feminist versions being totally off the rails, when Iâve seen people be all like âShe didnât love Theseus, she chose to leave and he was so sad that he forgot to change the sails!â but like thatâs stupid as fuck, and it just takes the âdonât be a dick to womenâ message out of one of the few stories that actually had one in it, because he forgot to change the sails because he was in too much of a hurry because he was breaking the promise he made to her and abandoning her). Initially, from what we know, stories told that Medusa was a titan, just born a gorgon, related to the gods and all that, with two sisters⌠the whole Athena and Poseidon rape in the temple thing didnât happen and she wasnât human (although maybe mortal for the convenience of the heroes in the stories). But then the dude who just liked to add rape and tragic origin stories to all the female myths (seriously, this was his favourite thing, taking women from âjust born a scary monster because itâs a scary monster mythâ to âshe was so beautiful that horrible things happened to herâ with a very strong aftertaste of âwell thatâs what you get for being prettyâ style misogyny) - the Roman poet Ovid - got his hands on it after artists started making her look all pretty, and he was like âokay but what if she was a very pretty human, who got raped and transformed by the godsâ, and then the most well-known version of Medusa was born (maybe he took inspiration from more than the pretty sculptures, itâs hard to tell because I canât ask him for one thing, and also most of the spread was word of mouth because they were poems). Now I canât tell you if these changed versions won out over the arguably less misogynistic versions because people just like drama and tragedy, and they didnât really think too deeply about the emerging pattern (I mean, it wasnât like you could just sit down and read them all during the day, they were told by storytellers, poets, and you were an illiterate passerby just listening for a bit, or maybe a big fat rich dude drinking wine and somehow enjoying the poems with little to no thought about the constant theme of assholes like you getting punished for your greed⌠or rather your wife getting punished with a big sexy bull for your greed, or your loved ones getting turned to gold for your greed), but I guess you could interpret it that the fact that these versions won out is more indicative of the times than the fact that they werenât the only versions⌠personally I take it to mean something much simpler: Ovid was an incel.
Greek/Roman mythology is basically like if Eastenders was written by hundreds of people over hundreds of years, and everybody was an immortal superhero related to everyone else. Throw ideas of consistency to the wind because you wonât find them in this hot mess.
Comic books. You know how many versions of Spiderman and Batman and shit there are, movies that sacrifice half the lore and canât keep the science of the Antman suit consistent, a whole series where Deadpool just travels between all the universes killing people, Thor is a woman now for some reason⌠thatâs what Greek/Roman mythology is like, except almost nobody wrote it down and they were singing it.

Bonus cold hard facts:
- Pagan, polytheist, and other religions can be abusive, cults, or cult-like too, theyâre not exempt
- Somebody voicing that theyâve been abused within or by your religionâs institutions or members is not a personal attack on you, nor is it an opportunity to âwin them backâ

- Believing antisemitic conspiracy theories is actually antisemitic
- There actually are good, heartwarming, and moral stories in a lot of religious texts, and calling them simply evil books ignores that a vast array of things are written within, often by multiple different authors
Thank you for reading these bonus cold hard facts with Mod Vape.
Your point abt MKU is true per se but how is it remotely related to the rest of the thread? MKU has nothing to do with religion.
Because conspiracy theories and religion often go hand in hand, just like the point about preparing for funerals was relevant because death practices are often, but not exclusively, related to religious beliefs. Some conspiracy theories blame a religion or people of that religion for all the ills in the world, some involve believing that your religionâs equivalent to the devil is working with who you blame or causes their behaviour, while some, like flat earth, are often predominantly populated by religious people whoâs opinions are informed by their religion. MKUltra theories are no exception to this, and Iâve seen all sorts of conspiracy theories that involve that and are tied to peopleâs religion.

Pascalâs WagerâŚ
Pascalâs Wager states that if you believe in God and youâre right, your afterlife will be â (heaven, an infinite positive). It states that if youâre an atheist and youâre wrong then your afterlife will be -â (infinitely negative, hell). And the other possibility is that the atheist is right, we cease to exist, we feel nothing, and the afterlife is neutral: 0.
I think we can all agree that your experience in life could be a positive or negative number, whether you believe in God or not - it depends entirely on circumstances, on you as a person, on whatâs available to you, your mental health, etc. But it can never be â because life is finite.
If we use W as the possibility that youâre wrong and R for the possibility that youâre right (with each potentially being 1 or 0), and we use N for that finite, less than infinite number (because formatting fucks up if you use a less than sign⌠thanks Tumblr) that represents your lifeâs experiences, the equation you need looks like this:
Theist: R(â + N) + W(0 + N)
Atheist: R(0 + N) + W(-â + N)
On the theist equation, even if R is 0 and W is 1 (if theyâre wrong), the theist still has N, their life experience. But if R is 1 and W is 0 (if theyâre right), they have â.
On the atheist equation, if R is 1 and W is 0, the atheist has N, their life experience. However, if R is 0 and W is 1, the atheist has -â.
The argument mathematically states that an atheist has the potential for infinite suffering, but not infinite happiness, while the theist has the reverse - and thus the maths dictates that the potential outcomes are best if you believe.
Often worded as something like âYou can only lose finite things by believing, but you stand to gain or lose an infinity.â or âAtheists only get a neutral or bad afterlife, Christians only get neutral or good.â or simply âWhat if youâre wrong?â
On the surface, it seems like a pretty good mathematical argument for pragmatic belief⌠however, you may have noticed that a few variables are still missing.
What if the theist is wrong, and a different God exists who will punish them for believing in the wrong God? What if the atheist is wrong but the God that exists isnât one that will punish you for being an atheist, and will instead reward them?
Essentially there are actually three possibilities: either we all cease to exist at some point, and therefore have a finite existence and a zero afterlife (even if there are more finite lives between now and that zero, such as in something like reincarnation, the lives are still finite), or we have an infinite afterlife that is negative (resulting in a negative infinite, no matter how severe the negative aspect is - a runny nose for all eternity is just as infinite as a flaming pit, when you present it mathematically like this), or we have an infinite afterlife that is positive.
All of these possibilities remain suggested on the table and should be represented in the equation, regardless of which one you believe will happen to you.
So letâs add Z for the possibility that youâre wrong in a different way, and factor this into the risk equation:
Theist: R(â + N) + W(0 + N) + Z(-â + N)
Atheist: R(0 + N) + W(-â + N) + Z(â + N)
Pascalâs Wager is only an argument for belief if thereâs only one potential belief system to choose from. When it artificially removes the risk of a believer going to a âhellâ or an atheist going to a âheavenâ, of course it ends up showing that one has worse options than the other. But thatâs not the actual wager, because even the believer is still betting against the risk of his own God just sending him to Hell anyway (Godâs been shown to be pretty fickle and pedantic if youâre talking about the Abrahamic one, not to mention all the different sects and interpretations), let alone the risk of there being a completely different God or set of gods.
If it turns out that the theist was a Christian, but the Islamic God is the true one, then R and W become 0, and Z becomes 1, resulting in -â for the Christian.
If it turns out that there is no God and no afterlife, what happens to that N number, the finite number, the less than infinite number, that now defines all of our lives? How much has it been lowered by religious persecution, by people being killed, shamed, or otherwise tormented while alive? If the W is the 1 for the theist, how many people have lost out in the hopes that there was an infinity waiting for them? How many people has that N been a minus number for, because they were physically tortured or killed in the name of a God?
Finally, Iâd like to address â[âŚ] a rational person should live as though God exists and seek to believe in God. If God does not actually exist, such a person will have only a finite loss (some pleasures, luxury, etc.), whereas he stands to receive infinite gains (as represented by eternity in Heaven) and avoid infinite losses (eternity in Hell).â
Living as though God exists has led to witch hunts, terror attacks, murder, and other atrocities. Itâs still a negative, even if itâs not an infinite negative - the wager prioritizes the length of time over the level of suffering, an eternal runny nose would rate as worse than being stoned to death.
Those finite losses are also peopleâs whole lives. They might be finite, but if they were all there is for that person then thatâs a sad state of affairs. Nobodyâs life should be just suffering on the off chance that there might be a fantastic afterlife waiting for them - we should be making life better on the off chance that there isnât an afterlife waiting, that this is all we have, that youâre wrong and a God isnât going to swoop in and make it all better after people suffered or struggled while betting on a good afterlife.
Even if that finite number that represents our life gets dwarfed by infinity, itâs still all we have right now, and it may remain all we have, so I think it deserves a little more weight than itâs given.

i noticed that alot of LBGT kids feel like they have to tell their friends and family that theyre LBGT. even if theyll be rejected
and i want to remind u all that nobody is entitled to knowing your romantic, sexual or gender orientations. nobody. you have no moral obligation to share that information if youre not comfortable with doing so
youre not âlyingâ by not telling people or âhidingâ. cause its honestly no ones business but your own
you come out on your own terms when you feel safe and comfortable doing so!! or you can come out to a few trusted people if you want before telling a larger group
dont feel like you owe that information to anyone ok??
bringing this back for national coming out day!

Heteromantic asexuals and heterosexual aromantics are part of the LGBT+
Iâve been seeing some real acephobia in the last few days revolving around heteromantic asexuals and heterosexual aromantics, claiming they have no place in the LGBT+ community. Iâm here to tell you that if you think this way, you are wrong. Part of the LGBT+ acronym is âAâ. What does that âAâ stand for? ASEXUAL/AROMANTIC. If you exclude them from the community, youâre being acephobic and a bigot. Let our ace/aro siblings be a part of our pride. They belong just as much as you do and need to stop being erased/excluded. ~Flareon

ARE YOU FUCK WITS STILL DEFENDING PEDOPHIES? GOD, I WISH YOU GUYS WOULD JUST SWALLOW SOME TAPEWORMS, YOU FUCKING PEDO LOVERS AND DDLG/CGL SUPPORTERS SHOULD GET SENT OUT BACK AND GASSED LIKE THE NAZIS YOU ARE
You have such amazing reading comprehension skills. You know that?
Iâm not defending pedophiles. Iâm saying they should be kept away from children and if they refuse then they should be locked up.
In what world is that defending them?~Flareon
On that post, Flare said: âNow I wouldnât say choke but they should DEF be kept as far away from children as possible, register as a sex offender and/or child predator, and possibly even be jailed if they refuse to do the first two things.â
Personally, I disagree with the sex offender registry altogether (for a number of reasons, but I wonât go on that tangent here). Itâs just a means for vigilantes to prey on people - including people who were wrongly accused, or just put on there for public urination, etc. So I definitely disagree with Flareâs comment that people who havenât done anything should have to register as sex offenders and put themselves at risk like that.
You guys know that I support rehabilitation instead of the prisons we have now, and I only support lifelong imprisonment in cases of repeated serious offenders (eg serial killers) who are also resistant to treatment - and in those cases I think prisons should not be for profit and should simply be a place for those people to live safely and comfortably and away from the general populace. I most certainly do not support prison for somebody who hasnât committed an offense, so again, I disagree with what Flare said on that post.
âGuess what. There isnât a single person who has ever walked the earth that hasnât had a desire to do something evil. Itâs a part of human nature. We should support and try to correct each other instead of jumping right to âletâs murder somebody because they guiltlessly have twisted sexual fantasies.ââ
This person was closer to how I feel about it. We all think awful things from time to time - maybe not that bad, maybe worse, but we all have thought about doing something that would hurt somebody else - and very few people actually go on to murder, rape, torture, etc.
If somebody doesnât hurt anybody, then the task at hand is to help them maintain that state; if somebody does hurt somebody, then the task at hand is to help them become better and not do that again; vengeance is just adding pain to an already painful situation, and prison how it is just produces radicals and re-offenders anyway.
Yes, I agree with preventative measures - like having access to therapy, like having a good support network, like being self-aware and taking responsibility. But âstay away from kidsâ isnât possible (there isnât some kidless village 1,000 miles from civilization that accepts all refugees from our disgusting kid-filled world), nor will it actually prevent actual offenders - people need the internal strength and certainty and so on to genuinely control themselves, because no matter where you live or where you work, you can still drive and access the internet.
Plus ultimately, if any attempt to get help and improve their fortitude is met with sex offender registries, vigilantes, and potentially prison, when theyâve committed absolutely no offense or harm, then theyâre going to keep quiet and suffer in silence without help - itâs just going to stop people coming forward, stop people getting help, and hinder prevention efforts.
âARE YOU FUCK WITS STILL DEFENDING PEDOPHIES?â
I mean, officially weâd dropped the topic. I donât know why Flare brought it up.
But if locking up people who refuse to flee their house when theyâve nowhere else to go just because kids move in next door, or refuse to drop out of school because they as a teen discover that they have attractions to substantially younger people, or refuse to have an abortion when theyâre pro-life and a condom ripped, or whatever - when they havenât committed an offense and they havenât harmed anyone - is âdefendingâ those people, then I really donât wanna know what anonâs idea of attacking is.
âGOD, I WISH YOU GUYS WOULD JUST SWALLOW SOME TAPEWORMS,â
I heard thatâs good for weight-loss?
âYOU FUCKING PEDO LOVERS AND DDLG/CGL SUPPORTERS SHOULD GET SENT OUT BACK AND GASSEDâ
Nobody should be gassed. Advocating for murder isnât a good look, anon. Especially when your methodology is a throwback to one of the darkest periods in human history. Itâs not intimidating, because I know that you canât act on it - itâs just pathetic and ugly. And frankly, anon, if measures were put in place to start killing people for their unsavoury thoughts, this one would land you on the guillotine with the rest of us.
I find it kind of disappointing though that Flare went for the âIâm not defending themâ retort, rather than âI donât deserve to die for my opinionsâ.
Also CGL and DDLG are kinks, they are not pedophilia, they are adults engaging in a consensual relationship. Any argument against CGL and DDLG boils down to the equivalent of âKids wear t-shirts, and the woman you like is wearing a t-shirt, therefore youâre a pedophile.â and youâre fucking stupid for not only lumping it in with pedophilia, but for wishing death upon people who merely defend the right of adults to engage in consensual sex with other adults.
âLIKE THE NAZIS YOU AREâ
You⌠just advocated⌠for gassing people⌠and youâre calling other people Nazis? Well, Iâm not a Nazi, and I donât think the Nazis agreed at all with my stances on capital punishment - Iâm pretty sure you and they had a more similar stance on murder and how to go about murdering.

I myself am not sure why I brought it up, in all honesty.
Anyway, I feel I didnât make myself completely clear. My stance is that anyone who refuses to stay away from children and seek help as well as make it known should be the ones locked up. AKA, the offenders. Those who offend and harm children need to be locked up to keep children safe. It is, ultimately, not defending people who harm children. (in response to @unhappy-opinions with this as well since I just saw their response)
Those who seek help, who do what they can to keep children safe, who avoid places with children, ect are the people who Iâm defending.Â

âI myself am not sure why I brought it up, in all honesty.â
Big mood, every time I open my big mouth xD
âanyone who refuses to stay away from children and seek help as well as make it known should be the ones locked up. AKA, the offendersâ
I donât think that not going to therapy, not avoiding kids (by this I mean not moving house if kids move in next door, not dropping out of school, still going to the shop at normal hours, etc), and having ethical discussions on tumblr count as offending, and definitely not worthy of prison - but I agree that some level of intervention needs to be done if somebody is going to NAMBLA protests, hanging around parks with the intent to stare at kids, etc. So I think we mostly differ on the levels of intervention required and the times that the intervention is required.
Like, if somebody has murderous thoughts I believe thatâs something worth talking to a therapist about, but I donât think that they should be put in prison if they currently canât do that when they havenât hurt anyone - even if they talk about those thoughts.
I think that therapy needs to be more accessible, therapists need to be better informed on how to deal with more unsavoury things, and mandatory reporting laws need to be removed, with therapists instead advised on where to refer somebody and who to talk to for rehabilitation or more intensive prevention efforts in the event of intent to commit or actually having committed a crime.
Mandatory reporting and other overreactions (including to things that have no link whatsoever to pedophilia) can really harm innocent people and dissuade people from getting help for fear of being victims of that harm. If you havenât hurt anybody, and know that you wonât, and have the strength not to, getting therapy for a little further help to your own mental state, at the risk of having your entire life ruined and being put on lists that direct vigilantes to your door, isnât going to be worth it to you.
From the outside it might look like âIâd go through that to keep kids safe.â but if you woke up tomorrow exactly as you are but with that attraction, knowing full well that you wouldnât hurt kids because youâre still you and youâre still against that⌠would you really put yourself at risk for prison or being a victim of vigilante murder, just to assure other people that youâre lessening a risk that they claim is there, but that you know isnât there at all, because you know yourself and you know that you wouldnât hurt anyone? You know that going through that wonât keep kids any safer than you just not hurting kids, but it will hurt you, maybe kill you, maybe break you to the point where you do become misanthropic and cruel and dangerous.
Even violent intrusive thoughts can get you put through hell if your therapist misinterprets them as violent intent, and people are afraid of speaking up and actually getting help because they could be sectioned or arrested, even though they know that they would never act on their unsavoury thoughts because they donât want to hurt anyone.
I think that we need to create a system where people can safely get help and safely go about their lives, because otherwise the choice that youâre presenting them with is âKeep quiet about it and hope the system changesâ, âGo to prison/dieâ, or âMaybe go to prison/dieâ, and I think self-preservation is going to make the first option seem the most appealing.
They are people with minds and self-control, and I do think that they are as capable as you or I of not harming anybody - they know that, even if we as outsiders donât, so theyâre weighing up the options in a completely different context to us. Ultimately, theyâre the ones who choose whether they tell anybody, because we canât read their minds - we canât force them to reach out, we have to create a system where they can safely reach out.
Remember, many offenders, and according to research the majority of offenders, arenât even pedophiles - anybody has the potential inside of them to do awful things, and there are many risk factors that can lead to it, and the best way to combat it is to address those risk factors and help sufferers.
Locking people away isnât currently working, and we arenât capable of using telepathy to seek out anyone with risk factors and contain them⌠and if we did that it would be cruel, because weâd be harming those who have not harmed. A risk factor isnât a âthey willâ, itâs a risk factor, but there are other factors and self-control that can prevent someone from ever enacting that risk Harming the innocent isnât âplaying it safeâ in my opinion, itâs a dangerous precedent and cruelty that will be further abused.
âThose who offend and harm children need to be locked up to keep children safeâ
Again, I support rehabilitation, and I believe that our current prison system is ineffective at preventing re-offending and at reducing suffering, as well as the fact that it is often radicalizing people, worsening people, or enacting vengeance and suffering upon people - including the falsely accused and including people who could be rehabilitated.
