@perseusnet  â  q u e s t # 8, character introductions      ¡ ¡ ¡ nico di angelo
then there was NICO DI ANGELO. dang, that kid gave leo the    freaky-deakies. he sat back in his leather aviator jacket, his black t-shirt and jeans, that wicked silver    skull ring on his finger, and the    stygian sword at his side. his tufts of black hair struck up in curls like baby bat wings. his eyes were sad and kind of    empty, as if heâd stared into the depths of    tartarusâwhich he had.

and there the children of dark night have their dwellings, sleep and death, awful gods. the glowing sun never looks upon them with his beams, neither as he goes   up into heaven, nor as he comes   down from heaven. and the former of them roams peacefully over the earth and the seaâs broad back and is kindly to men; but the other has a   heart of iron, and his spirit within him is   pitiless as bronze: whomsoever of men he has once seized he holds fast â and he is hateful even to the deathless gods.

âłÂ thetis
Thetis is individually the most famous of Nereides, the fifty daughters of Nereus and Doris, mostly because of her marriage to Peleus. Even though her wedding was carried through against her will and she wasnât very fond of her husband, the union resulted in the birth of a child, Achilles. Thetis loved her son more than anything, and desperately tried to protect him from his destiny.Â

â  this,  â  he cautiously PEERS down at the red-striped box of hot sauce-covered cauliflower the oddly popular food truck parked across the street sold him, gently poking at it with his plastic fork as he considers just tossing the strange thing away â but what a waste of money that would be.  â  has got to be the strangest combination of food iâve ever seen.  â Â
or maybe his palate just isnât adventurous enough to accept anything mildly bizarre.Â
ââIt appears quite appetizing to me.â thetis eyed the box curiously, wondering how the combination of hot sauce and fried cauliflower would taste â but then she lifted her head to offer the man a small, hopeful smile. âDo you mind if I ... â her voice trailed off, her gaze dropping to the bag again, the rest of her question written across her face, as clear as day.
paxvictoria:
âOh I do recommend seeing it often, even the same show is beautiful each night.
âIndeed. Â Though not very often, I think they like to keep it for very special occasions. Â I am often astounded by them and what they can create. Â But yes the fountains do rank up there.â
ââI imagine itâs the kind of thing that no matter how many times you see it, youâll never grow weary of watching it.â
ââPerhaps they think that doing it too often would ruin some of its magic â that sounds like something they would worry themselves sick about ... But I will admit, some mortals have been blessed with rare gifts and talents that should definitely not go to waste. It would be a shame, otherwise.â
ofsolxandspirit:
âYour enthusiasm is quite infectious,â Sol responded with a seriousness that couldnât be faked even if sheâd wanted to. Mani had often complained about her somberness, claiming she needed to lighten up some. But while that kind of behavior came easy for her brother, it didnât so much for her. âI didnât realize there were so many shows.âÂ
But more shows meant more opportunities to see it â a bonus for her. âI would very much like to go ⌠Is it rude of me to ask you if youâre willing to accompany me? I am a stranger, after all.â
â âIs it an infection you wish to see cured?â she returned with a lighthearted smile. there was something about this solemn young woman that put a smile on her face, and hiding it made little sense at this point. âPerhaps they had such a high volume of requests and appeals that they had no choice but to give into public demand.â she hadnât lived in las vegas long enough to call herself an expert on the entertainment venues it offered. for all she knew, the fountains of bellagio had started off with only one choreographed show - before moving onto others.
â "Not at all,â thetis hastened to assure the other woman. âI was the first to initially make the offer. Rude would be me going back on my word.â something she strove not to do. âWe have fifteen minutes ... So, shall we?â sincerity in her voice, she nodded in the direction of the path that would take them to the fountains.
zaidxalmuluk:
âThen WHAT would you call it if not useless? What benefit can we possibly glean from observing something that has little value beyond a simpletonâs desire to watch a show so many PRAISE every day â just to say they have?â
âOh, habib qulbaa, you donât know the HALF of it.â
â âNot everything needs monetary value or a benefit of some kind attached to it. What happened to simply enjoying something for the sake of enjoying it? Do you get so little joy out of your life that you donât know what to do with something that is designed solely for entertainment purposes?â
â âYouâre right. I donât. But if youâre in need of an ear, I can always lend you mine.â
holang-ix:
âWho would? Theyâre tiny - with bulging eyes and spindly looking tails. The fish gods were not kind to them.â
âSad to say, Iâve got cats for brains. No aqua lovers allowed ⌠But hey, if waterâs your thing, good for you. Just leave me out of it.â
â âIs that a judgy tone I detect? They canât help being born with such ... unappealing attributes, fish gods or no fish gods.â thetis was certain most fish gods would find his comment offensive. âAnd since my father was once dubbed Old Man of the Sea, I donât know if I should be offended or not.â but the teasing note in her tone implied sheâd already made up her mind not to take anything that was said seriously.
ââIâve never heard that one before.â indeed, cats for brains was a new one. âBut with all your cat references â and obvious dislike of water â Iâm beginning to think feline blood flows through your veins.â

nansheof-sirara:
âMost of this city looks beautiful,â she agreed, âSadly, that isnât always the case with some of the activities that happen here.â
â âThat it does,â she responded with an affable smile. âI suppose Iâve been lucky thus far, as I have yet to encounter a regrettable experience. But something tells me you have. Intuition, perhaps.â
holang-ix:
âEverything.â
âItâs wet and cold and inescapable. I donât understand why people would even want to submerge themselves in it. Swimmingâs for guppies. Are you a guppie?â
â "Not since the last time I deigned to check â and while I have nothing against guppies, I wouldnât wish to be one. â
â âAh, but I hear swimming can be quite relaxing. Perhaps you should give it a try sometime. Who knows? You may find that you actually like it.â
paxvictoria:
âI have actually, but itâs one of those things that can be seen over and over again. Â Did you know they sometimes change the light colors for events or some holidays? Â Itâs pretty amazing.â
ââYou make a good point. I only saw it the one time and yet I'm quite looking forward to the next shows.â
ââThey do? ... Thatâs astounding, to say the least. Astounding that mortals created such a masterpiece. But then theyâve been known to create some of the most beautiful works of art â and the Fountains of Bellagio certainly qualify as one.â
ofsolxandspirit:
âI canât say that I have.â An absent frown forming on her lips at the thought of missing something that so many others found beautiful and spectacular â the ringing endorsements this choreographed water show earned on a nightly basis was simply amazing; she herself wouldâve remained completely in the dark about it if she hadnât happened to overhear a group of young mortals chattering excitedly about it three nights ago â Sol turned her full attention to the woman, the bright blue of her eyes alight with curiosity. âDo you know if the show is scheduled to happen tonight?â
â âThen you most definitely should!â thetis enthused, inwardly laughing at herself for taking on the role of city guide and pointing tourists in the direction of entertainment venues. but considering how beautiful the performances are, she just canât seem to help herself. âThere will be â from three to eight, thereâs a show every half hour. Rather brilliant planning on the inventorâs part; this assures everyone has the chance to see their magnificent creation in action.âÂ
â she was thinking about making her way back over to the fountains so that she could watch another show â but sharing the experience with another person, even a stranger, sounded fun too. âWould you like to go?â
holang-ix:
âPleasure? No. Misfortune? ⌠Maybe.â
âIf you stand too close, the water will get you.â
â âWhat do you have against water?â

zaidxalmuluk:
âDo you honestly THINK I have so much excess time to spare that I can squander it away on useless ventures?â
â âI canât say with any certainty that you do, since I donât know you. But I wouldnât go so far as to call this a useless venture either ... All, well, to each their own, I suppose.â
â âThough I canât deny that you sound busy â and stressed.â
elysianxfields:
âI actually havenât had the chance to, but Iâve been meaning to make my way over there ⌠Iâve heard such wonderful things about it.â
âIs it true that some of the songs used in the choreographed performance are actually popular pieces originally composed for Broadway?â
â âI would definitely recommend you make time for it. Out of all the amazing, colorful sights this city has to offer, those fountains have to be one of the best.â
â âNow I canât speak for all the popular pieces, but the shows I was privy to performed Luck Be A Lady from the musical Guys and Dolls and One, Singular Sensation from the musical A Chorus Line â both classics in my opinion.â
