Guess I should’ve gone to law school…
Group Fitness Culture
When I joined a gym for the first time, I gravitated toward a group fitness class. I did not want to hurt myself with the free weights or machines. After my first Zumba class, I was sold. I laughed so much at the moves we were attempting. An hour flies by.
I try all the classes. Yoga, Pilates, mobility...There is this magic in having everyone synchronized in movement. There is a wide range of ages and abilities, and the goal is to move.
In 2022 I made the transition from a student to leading my own class. My first class was with youth, and I then had a couple classes at a local university.
Culture is Found When I was growing up, it was hard to find a place to belong to. My parents had immigrated to America and there were struggles. The school I had transferred to in first grade was predominantly White. I had a difficult time fitting in. Though I knew at a young age I loved to color and draw. As I got older I explored other mediums. I treasured the opportunities that art gave me and I was able to make friends through it. In the culture of artists, I was able to relate to others outside of my ethnic identity.

"Growing up in sports" culture
I’ve participated in competitive sports for over half of my life. I swam, then I ran, and then I played ultimate frisbee. What’s interesting to me is that I still feel like this is an important part of my cultural identity, even though I am no longer in that space. The cultural aspects (values, memories, practices, sayings, etc) which I have developed with or adopted from my teammates in our micro-culture are still shared among us.
This had me thinking about cultural legacies and my experience with Asian-American culture. When my parents moved to North America and had kids, they chose to raise us as “Americans.” None of us speak our parents’ native tongue and a lot of their culture hasn’t been present in our lives. It’s been a journey to try and claim parts of my Asian cultural heritage while feeling removed from it. I’m not sure how everything fits together, but it’s really interesting how cultures change, disperse, and persist as we move through time and space.
