Iâm sure that my sister already explained just what the heck this stupid journal is for(I kinda just skimmed her entry) so I guess Iâll just continue where she left off.
I honestly didnât know why I went along on this little outing, but food is food so I figured it couldnât hurt. We tend not to make a habit of home cooked meals in the Gemini household. Our parents are almost always out on business so they are never around to cook. Not that I really care. Itâs not as if I ever eat much anyways. But, Iâm smart enough to appreciate a decent meal when it comes along.
After walking back to Nubâs house and Alex does her special little knock thing, he answers the door and we head up to his room while his mom finishes cooking. I plop down into one of the few comfortable chairs in his room and go straight to his laptop. Rude, you think? Well not if I fixed the thing itâs not! Dude has burned through more hard drives than I thought possible. Not that I havenât but that is beside the point. I promptly ignore my sisterâs pointed look and start tinkering with it.
Without looking up I ask, âSo what movie are we seeing?â
âEither of you seen Men in Black 3, yet?â He had taken a seat at the foot of his bed and Alex sat in the bean bag chair next to it.
âYea but I can see it again, that good with you Alex?â
âSure.â She replies, still warily eyeing his laptop, which I have turned upside down and have proceeded to completely dismantle the back with the multi-purpose tool I always keep in my pocket. Iâve learned by now that as long as I put it back together afterwards, Nub doesnât mind if I take apart his toys. He claims it keeps me out of too much trouble and the collateral damage is kept to a minimum.
âSo you excited about the transfer, Cleo?â He tries to start.
âAs Iâll ever be.â My lack of enthusiasm obviously isnât what he was expecting.
âCome on, youâre not even the tiniest bit excited that-â
âAnubis,â She interrupts him, âMaybe this isnât the time to talk about this.â
The poorly covered urgency and unease in her voice irked me and Iâm sure it showed. I ducked my head down and started to replace the parts in the laptop.
The thick as concrete tension in the room was cut when his mother called us down to eat. So quickly replacing the cover on the back I say, âLetâs go guys, food is calling!â
The three of us run downstairs to discover the delicious spread of food his mom made. Oh I love this woman! After we sat down, I immediately went to work on clearing my plate. She is undoubtedly the best cook ever! Since our parents are never around, we are almost always eating with Nubs and his mother so I had a pretty good idea that she did this for a reason. After a few minutes my suspicions were confirmed when she asked, âSo, girls, are you excited about going to high school this year?â
Alex, like the polite girl she was nodded and smiled. But, I knew that my face gave my emotions away again, when she kicked me under the table. My flinch did not go unnoticed and his mom looked at her curiously. With a shake of the head she told her two things; 1. I was fine and 2. that I was angry. Itâs never a good thing when Iâm angry, so she dropped the subject and asked about the movie. I finished eating in relative silence, throwing in the occasional smart comment. Luckily, Alex isn't quiet around her so it isnât awkward. We finished eating and the three of us walked to the theater across the street. We got the tickets and they went to go get snacks while I picked a spot. Normally, I sat in the way back because I snuck food in my bag but after some careful persuading, my âconscienceâ Alex had convinced me that if I didn't today she would buy me some Twizzlers that she said they wouldn't touch, not that they would anyways, they hate them. So I instead decided to sit in the very front with the bar. They came in food in tow and as promised, after they sat down and got settled, she handed me the delicious rope-like candy. The movie started a few minutes later and while it played, I could almost forget what was to come. Almost.
