Big misconception about me: I’m not sassy—I don’t like that word—or thick-skinned just because I’m a comedian. I’m peppy and vulnerable and a ­lovebug, and that’s what drew me to comedy.

People can get a bit like, “Oh my God, your life is different than mine.” But no, it’s not. Everyone’s got the same problems. We all get jobs, and we lose them. We have a good time, and we don’t have a good time. That’s it, you know? It’s changed in that some people have a certain expectation of what they might find when they meet me, which sucks, because I’m not that thing.

People can graft and graft and graft and never get a chance. At the end of the day, I think you do create your own success. People can sit back and say I was given an amazing opportunity, which is why I am where I am, but I also gave up being a normal teenager. I gave up a huge part of my adolescent life. I’m still petrified of my peers, because I just didn’t spend a lot of time with them.
